You're in the right place.
Your best bet? Buy a guitar and sign up for guitar lessons. Books can help you, but a guitar teacher can REALLY help you get started. Once you learned the basics, then you can go off on your own. |

QUOTE(blacktrix @ Sep 4 2008, 08:51 AM) You're in the right place. then again most things you can ask your friend to teach you, the real basics you dont really need a teacher just someone to guide you past the learning curve. but if you want to go more advanced i recommend a teacher and get a good one.Your best bet? Buy a guitar and sign up for guitar lessons. Books can help you, but a guitar teacher can REALLY help you get started. Once you learned the basics, then you can go off on your own. hahahah i never really had much of a teacher, most times he teaches licks and nothing much. come to think o it when i was back learning then, i was sloppy as hell (not that im not now) yet he still waved me ok. QUOTE(echobrainproject @ Sep 4 2008, 01:43 PM) advertisements? TS - anyway, signing up for lessons is your best bet. You ain't going to learn much on books and videos, best learn from a teacher and reference from those books and videos. |

Best way is to go to proper guitar lessons. I never had the time and money to do that, so I just learned everything I know from UG and Youtube. It does help you a lot, but then its really hard to learn theory without the proper guidance. So, best you get a guitar teacher. There are already a few promoting themselves here, haha.

QUOTE(BelowAverage @ Sep 4 2008, 02:28 PM) When comes into music notation, guitar is a complex instrument. Guitar is a good instrument which can be easy and can be complex.======= To the thread starter, if you are serious being a guitarist it is best to learn from a teacher. Self-taught is okay but it takes a lot of effort. Be a good guitarist by learning how to read music and play by ear at the same time. |

The problem I find with getting a friend to teach you, is that normally you're only teaching 20% and then fooling around the rest of the time. It's also less disciplined because you might think you're buddies so don't have to practice. It's quite frustrating actually.
With a proper teacher, you will have to do homework, brush up your skills, otherwise you're just wasting your cash. Think of it more as a boost for you to practice instead of wasting cash. |

QUOTE(Dead Eye @ Sep 4 2008, 04:30 PM) AGREE!!!! lolQUOTE i just wrote something about practicing guitar on me blog..maybe you can check it out ..should be able to help you .. link on my signature.. WHOAHHHHH classic pic!!!! rotfl! back to the topic. its possible to learn on your own or from a friend. problem is its more likely to pick up bad habits and wrong techniques that will eventually hinder your progress. take for example, if you bought a book and saw the picture of the proper way to hold a guitar, most people wouldnt pay much attention and think they already do know how to hold one. something so simple, yet details wasnt focused on. ive had that problem before, and it took quite a while to get rid of certain bad habits. |
