I want to mod LED powered by molex, What do i need. The last time i tried. direct LEDs to molex , all LEDs boom. wasted a lunch . So i want to know do i need a resistor? what ohm ?

Thanks karthyhu

Before you start you have to get some leds. I used blue leds with rating 3.5 volts and 20mA. Brightness is somewhere around 2000-3000 mcd. Resistor that is connected in series with the led is 100 ohms. This was the closest match that I could find from my toolbox. Needle is used to take the molex connectors apart.

You should look for 5 volt leds. With them you don't need to use a resistor and it makes the installation easier and faster to do.

user posted image

It is best to use 3 mm leds in this mod. I only had 5 mm leds so I had to mod them a bit. Led on the left is filed so it can be fitted inside the molex connector. With 3mm led this step may not be needed.

user posted image

Pins are kept in place with two claws. Bend them so that the pin is free to slide away from the connector. Just look inside the connector from the front side and you will see where to bend the claws.

user posted image

There are three "wall" separating the pins from each other. Remove one of these walls either between 5 volt pin and the ground or between the two ground pins. I will be powering the led from the 5 volt line so these both choices work for me but if you are planning on using 12 volt line just remove the wall between 12 volt pin and the ground. To do the job faster I used Dremel with routing head. You can use side cutters or knife etc. Even if you place the led between those ground pins, you have to remember to get the power for the led from the five or 12 volt pin.

user posted image

Ready to be fitted back inside the molex connector. Just bend those claws back a bit and slide the pins back in. You may hear a little click when the claws goes past the base of the connector and lock in place. After that I added some hot glue between the pins that are holding the led in place just to make it more secure.

With these, who needs ccfls anymore whistling.gif

Not necessary to put at molex. u can do a row of LEDs urself. I got 4 blue LEDs hanging at random places.

U got the concept, all u need is a lil innovative smile.gif

for those who use 100ohm can consider 75ohm coz according to ohms law;
r=v/i
v=3.5
i=0.02
r=3.5/0.02
r=75

google is very helpful to learn about it ler.. type LED or light emitting diode then a whole bunch of info would appear..in wikipedia mostly..
also with resistors..

see carefully within the LED..
there's a flag shape..that's the negative..the other is positive.
or
both of the LED legs are different length..one is shorter than the other..the shorter one is negative aka cathode (english) aka katod (bm) while the longer one is positive aka anode (english) aka anod (bm).. usually people differentiate it by looking at the legs as it is much easier than remembering the flag.. katod (bm) in a way also means shorty lol..

resistors has no positive nor negative o_O
either way is fine...read about resistors at google/wikipedia if u're unsure lur...

switches can be fitted either at the negative or positive..up to u..it's usually at the positive after the source or before all the resistors or LED or whatever..

if u're not using resistors...better make sure the source is around 3volts, don put more than that..if not, say bye bye to ur LEDs...

well, do some calculations using those resistance, voltage, amperes, bla bla bla.. I equals V over R that equation..lol..
also take note whether u wanna put it in series or parallel..
the voltage is shared when put in series whereas all the voltage is equal when put in parallel.
haha..buy more incase some got burnt or whatever~~

Some additional Info, the color of the LED will also determine the working voltage of the LED. Different color uses different die. For lower wavelength LED such as UV, Blue and Green(Super bright) and also white LED, the forward voltage will be around 3.5-4v. As for longer wavelength, such as green to red, the working LED will be around 1.8-2.5v. As LED is current driven, so it should be powered by a current driver, but as a driver is more complex, so we cap the working voltage accordingly using a resistor. So just do the calculation and use the approriate resistor.

Added on April 4, 2009, 4:53 pmAs for the resistor recommendation, if the source is 5v, the recommended resistor value for blue LEDs should be 75-100ohms, and for amber, red LEDs, it should be around 150-200ohms, correct me if i'm wrong. I'm assuming the forward current for the LED is 20mA.
