Hi All,

I'm interested in getting a pair of bettas (male & female) and I've done a lot of reading (BSM, Betty Splendens, wikiHow, etc..) over the past few weeks to learn how to breed them (in order to produce different variation of colour and type). To be honest my target is Double Tail + Halfmoon/delta tail = Double Ray / Double Double Ray. Below are a few questions I have;

1. where can i find medicines for known betta diseases where i'm located (Puchong) as i've gone to a few pet shops in puchong and either they don't have or sometimes then don't even know what i'm talking about?
2. where can i find fry food in puchong?
2. is there a betta breeder in puchong? (if none, let me be the 1st ;D)
3. since there is no price control on betta fishes, i'm looking for sellers willing to sell 7 weeks old bettas (double tail male and halfmoon/delta tail female) below RM10, is there any?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

hi edmund,

thank you for your reply..
- you are right, double double rays are CTs with more split ends wink.gif
- hmm, RM20 to RM40 is what i got too (will survey further then)
- Fry food, don't really want to go all the way to KL, will consider online then
- Yes, 7 weeks fry is what i want and continue to breed them until they are ready to mate. but like you said, thats not gonna happen so will survey further.
- For medicine, i just want to know where to find them for the below diseases;
Black spot disease
Chilodonella
Dropsy
Eye fungus
Fish lice
Mouth "fungus" - Melafix
Ick / white spot disease
Anchor Worm
Pop-eye
Skin fungus, body fungus
Velvet
Fin Rot - Melafix

p/s : I don't have a betta fish yet as I am not well prepare yet (i.e. where to find medicine, where to find fry food, etc..)

To be honest, u r just like me last time.. b4 buying any betta, will prepare everything 1st.. haha.. looking at ur comment makes me remind me last time.. hoho..
Well for those diseases, u can try to prevent them or minimizing them by adding little bit of salt and ketapang leaf(indian almond leaf) into the water.. prevent is better than cure. Water change(WC) regularly then shud b alright.
For fungus, fin rot,pop eye, u can use yellow powder. But a bottle of Melafix is alright also. Dropsy? better let it die in peace only,so far 99% fish kena dropsy=mati. Velvet and white spot u can use methylene blue.

This is some good advice.. Thank you for your time replying.. thumbup.gif

Thank you for the ebook..
My plan to breed is still on going, slowly but surely..
I will try to update as much as possible the progress..
For starters, below is some pictures of my tank setup.
The tank is running on a fishless cycle and once i have the bettas i plan to remove the Suction Filter and leave the Air Pump filter (picture in url)

nice but i will suggest u turn off all the filter when u put in the betta. then the separation thing also can remove.. do put a half cut cup on the water for the male to make bubble nest. then those pipe in the female tank u can put in the breeding tank for the female to hide while breeding.. the male might chase the female for 9 street.. haha.. only turn on the filter(with minimum bubble) when the fries r age around 3 weeks.

will take note..
nice pictures btw..
what do you cross to get marble types?

to add to edmund's advice, do a water change. then put some plants. put the little fella in and then leave it. my betta didn't flare for over a week when i brought it home. it's just not comfortable yet. some take shorter time, and some longer. now flaring all the time.  doh.gif

hi edmund..

nice.. just curious, when u say HMPK (Halfmoon Plakat) is it because it was bred with Halfmoon + Plakat = Halfmoon Plakat?
Or is it because it's a Plakat that has a Halfmoon tail?

Added : When buying a betta, what determines the price of it? (i.e. I've seen in mudah.my there are people selling their bettas for almost RM400)

QUOTE(edmund90 @ Sep 17 2011, 08:55 PM)
HMPK = a plakat(short tail) tat has 4 ray and above and got 180 caudal spread.  (*i guess pretty close to ur 2nd explanation)
TPK aka Traditional plakat = 2 ray at the caudal only

HM = a long tail fish with 180 caudal spread
Super delta = a long tail fish with more than 170 caudal spread but less than 180
Delta = a long tail fish with less than 170 caudal spread
Veiltail = a 2 ray long tail betta

The price? tats very subjective.. the seller set the price then if the buyer like and can afford then the deal is done.
One more thing is ; u pay for wat u get.. If u like it then the price isnt a big issue anymore unless the price set by the buyer is too ridiculous.
Usually for HMPK and HM price range will be RM20-RM100(depends on quality).
Hope d above guide might help ya.. Anyway, i was still learning also..  thumbup.gif
*
thanks.. btw, i've gone through a few of your post and i assume u breed HMPKs..
if you don't mind me asking, is it because it sells better or u just like HMPKs?
what about crowntails, i don't see people selling that as much as HMs / HMPKs..

erm, i just started to breed HM ( fries only 3 days old) haha..
CT = hard to maintain..
HMPK = easy to take care and nice
HM = nicer but need more effort to take care ( tats y now only try breed HM)

owh ok.. anyway, will be getting my male & female betta middle of next week..
will post some photos and if all goes well with the breeding, then will post betta fry photos smile.gif..

Added on September 18, 2011, 8:16 pmHi.. anyone in Puchong know where i can find daun ketapang?
normally the answer would be its everywhere or by the roadsides so hopefully the location is specific with landmarks if possible.. thanks a bunch..

After reading on the internet i've found some info about the below locations but still unable to locate it.
- Medan Maju Jaya along the road to Puchong Perdana
- Puchong Mosque near to Tractor Malaysia

sad story.. today i went to the pet shop in puchong prima (pasar malam road, beside saloon) after work coz wanted to get anticlorine, as usual i would just check out the bettas (veiltails) on their shelf..
suddenly i noticed a greyed eyed betta.. i ketuk 3 times but never move.. so i asked the owner (bits and pieces of the conversation)..

Me : Auntie, ini ikan mcm sudah mati la..
Auntie : iya ka?
Me : kesian ini ikan, mcm ni u rugi wor..
Auntie : xpa la, ini ikan susah jual.. xda org mau..
Me : Owh..

Habis beli my anticlorine, sat in the car for 5 mins thinking..

Thinking : Am I good enuf to breed bettas? what if i have 100 bettas, is it my fault if some die coz i never provide healthy enuf environment for them.. haiyoo, thinking too much oredy..

need some advice..

Senario
---------
I've recently released the female betta together with the male for breeding pusposes and before released I've noticed the below;

- Male made bubble nest
- Male swimming in "S"
- Male dash to female and flares but never attacks
- Female developed vertical stripes
- Female fatter around the abdominal area
- Female puts her head down and kind of wiggles
- Female visits bubble nest and never destroys it

However, when then male touches or rubs agains the female it will sprint away.. I've tried separating them twice however, all the sings that male and female are ready to mate are visible but when they are together the same thing happens..

Question
----------
- Should I permanently separate them?
- Base on the senario, will male and female eventually mate?
- Is it is because a CrownTail (male) and Double tail Plakat (female) can't be breeding partners?

Thanks in advance for your help

Added on September 24, 2011, 8:28 pmTank Setup
-------------
- 15 gallon tank (water filled half - 7 inch high - tank height 12 inch)
- Live plants
- Daun ketapang (provided by friend from Setapak - nest made under it)
- Added aquarium salt

1 word. DONT DISTURB THEM!! DONT TRY TO TOUCH OR SEPARATE THEM.. IF on d 4th day still no egg has been releases then remove the female and re-condition both of them.. CT male? ur male is it very small size? if the male too small then very hard to wrap the female... usually male is bigger than female only can breed.
*
male length (excluding tail) longer then female however, female body width (excluding fins) wider then male..

with that said, is it good enuf to leave them together and if nothing to re-condition after 4 days or immediately separate?

never fight, just female jual mahal doh.gif .. kacau very minimum, make me feel like a peeping tom sweat.gif

Added on September 25, 2011, 12:31 pmedmund.. thanks for your advice.. today i see the female practically living in the bubble nest and coming out once in a while..

i also notice that the vertical stripe is darker (black+light brown) unlike before (dark brown+light brown)..

anyway, if they start to spawn will update further.. thanks again edmund..

Added on September 25, 2011, 8:39 pmUpdate..

- Don't know when they did it but eggs are in bubble nest..
- Removed female as male was getting aggressive
- Male tending to the eggs and hope fully tomorrow or the day after it will hatch..

further update if there is progress..

Added on September 27, 2011, 12:04 pmUpdate..

- fry hatched
- male still in tank as fry still hanging on to bubblenest..
- water clear and no algae but bottom can see chunks of dirt (10%)..

thinking to do a water change but fries are smaller then those chunks of dirt and nest might crumble if water level drops however, also considering to DIY a sponge filter.. any suggestions?

My betta fries are now 1 week old. before i start cleaning the tank when they are 2 weeks old, was wondering if there are any guides, things to prepare or suggestion that can help with the cleaning method..

did some reading over the internet and some suggested for a gentle syphon.. how do you normally clean the fry tank when they are hard to see?
