as mentioned before, your reasoning here reflects your mentality. the ultimate point is, in a game there's no point in hitting the other player. to the fella who used football as an example, did you forget that in football you get a red card for fighting? so yes, go ahead and fight if all you want to do is ultimately go to jail. the problem here is your attitude that condones violence (the whole "if he gets whacked who cares" thing). even if you dont whack anyone, you condone violence by actively letting it happen.

even if they leave, or tell you your mother is fat, or cucuk you on the highway with his car, or whatever, the point is it takes a bigger man to ignore the moron. by stooping to his level and hitting him just shows your level of maturity. none of what he's doing is a real crime per say, or is actively harming you. but if he fights, by all means defend yourself, and sick the police on him. thats what the law is for, after all.
