It would be helpful if you'd tell us what YOUR surname is. I'm not making any assumptions here.

It's the English style of writing the name. Over here in Malaysia we have fields for name and sometimes we see underline your surname.

On the contrary, that only fits western styled name.
In Chinese name:

first name = surname = family name = tan
last name = given name = hok sin

For malay

first name = given name = abu bakar
last name = father's name = bin Mohd. sweat.gif

Bryan Tan Hok Sin

You will only see this kind of name legally registered in Malaysia and Singapore.

i.e. First Name - Last Name - First Name

To me it's either legally registered to be Bryan Tan or Tan Hok Sin

No it isn't.

It is because of 3rd world countries like us wiping @ss with westerners.

First name and Last name only applied to western enlgish speaking countries in which their surname is located LAST. The maiden name is the Middle name.

For Chinese names, the surname is located FIRST, followed by the given name LAST

Indian and malay names do not have surnames, but their father's name at the back.

So it is very wrong for any of us to put our surnames as last.

If you let the damn angmoh dictate how you should name your name, then put your head into the ground like an ostrich, for it is a disgrace!

uhh We are talking about the fields on the form. If you fill it wrong, your info will come out wrong. Simple as that. Just filling a form, don't have to think so complicated about wiping whos a$$ and crap. First name implies the name given to you, last name implies the name of your family... period.

Don't talk about disgrace and stuff. I am pretty sure half the thing in your life came from westerners as well. In fact I would say its actually have already invaded your life.

Regardless.
Those forms are for westerners. Our locally made forms usually do not have first, middle and last name.
The problem with those forms is that the english has a very bad habit of rearranging your name thereafter, so even if you do fill in Last name as your surname, your name will come out crap like Ah Piau Tan

If your first name is TAN, then write TAN
But the problem is, they will rearrange your name to be "Last Name, First Name" or "First Name Last Name"

If it is the former, then Tan, Ah Piao seems ok but with the comma
If it is the latter, Ah Piao Tan seems so wrong.

Alternately, one can leave the last name blank and see what happens. Certain systems will trigger an error..but thats not our problem whistling.gif

Also, for malays, do they write their father's name in the Last name?

How about this?

eg. Michael Chan Beng Siaw

I've seen forms like this:

First name:
Middle name:
Other given names:

Last/ Family name is clear = Chan.

IMO, just fill it according to the order of your name.

In this case,
First: Tan
Last: Hok Sin

So that your name will appear as Tan Hok Sin later.

If you put
First: Hok Sin
Last: Tan

It will appear as Hok Sin Tan, just like our Chong Wei LEE

If it's John Tan, then
First: John
Last: Tan

That's the way I use to make sure my name doesn't goes wrong.
