Hey clemong_888, since you're here; what's your Microsoft Office package? I noticed there's no Microsoft Works 9.0 for Japan spec.

hi guys, this is my first post in LYN and glad to meet u all here.
ofcourse im attracted by this dell studio xps 16
im buying it soon for my college use, and it starts at may so i should wait for the price to get lower  smile.gif

the thing is, does coolerpad really can solve the heat produced by this lappie at least by 25%?
another dumb question here, about the TV tuner, which channels can i watch? astro? LOL
*
How much will a notebook cooler dissipate the heat is not the only factor; surrounding temperature plays a huge role in how hot the notebook will run.
Not really sure what channels, I guess you won't be able to watch Astro, just standard channels like TV1,2,3 etc.

there's new bios and Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi MB available to download for sxps 16.. anyone tried them?
*
Didn't try the Creative one, because the IDT driver deserves to be on its own, in my opinion IDT+Creative Sound Blaster just doesn't sound right to me.
On the BIOS, don't use this version for now; many Studio XPS 16 users (globally) agreed that Dell wouldn't upload a BIOS firmware which has a revision number that's lower than the current version.
For instance the current BIOS version is A05, the one on Dell's website is revision A02, that's weird isn't it? Just stay away from this 'new' BIOS for now. When I try to flash my BIOS using this file a few days ago, it wouldn't run on Windows environment.

Okay, I placed an order for the Studio XPS 16 and it is now at the acknowledgement stage.
It is taking forever to be confirmed by the bank (Maybe because it's a Sunday)

Anyway, in the event I would want to buy an additional battery in the future, which battery should I get?
http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/con...RY&s=dhs&~ck=mn

It seems that all the batteries are labelled "Latitude"  rclxub.gif
*
It takes 24 hours for the bank to approve the transaction; as for the battery, those are Latitude batteries; not sure if there's any spare ones available for purchase (for the Studio XPS 16).

Wanna ask SXPS 16 users 2 things:

-How's the sound quality from the speakers with the subwoofer??
-Does the leather patch at the back get scratched easily??

Thanks in advance. wink.gif
*
The sound quality is reasonable I would say, not quite Harmon Kardon/Altec Lansing's standard though.
No for me, that is if you don't transport the notebook in a regular basis; if you do, you might get a scratch or two, still depends how you carry your notebook (e.g. in a bag pack, by hand etc).

Infinite twin fan good?? Or other cheaper 1 about same performance with infinite?
*
Heat is not a concern to me as the weather here is cold, and the fact that I'm using a notebook cooler reduces the core CPU temperature down to around 45 degrees Celcius and hard disk temperature down to 36 degrees Celcius. Bear in mind that I'm running my notebook at "Balanced" mode all the time.
As I've mentioned in my previous post, I'm using Cooler Master Notepal W2; I have the Cooler Master Infinite but the cleaning process is very tedious, so I opt for the W2 instead.

I realize the reason why the touchpad area is so warm when I pry open the base cover of my Studio XPS 16.
This approach is somewhat unexpected from Dell. Apparently Dell engineers decide to use the casing of the notebook as a 'heatsink', as you may (or may not) realized, the base of the notebook is made out of metal (aluminum I presume) and the southbridge chipset (which is just under the mousepad area) is in contact with the base metal, hence conducting the heat energy from the southbridge and dissipate it to the surroundings.
The northbridge shares the a copper pipe heatsink with the GPU chip; the CPU has another copper pipe heatsink, both copper pipes are attached to the fan.

since you opened it did you notice that there's some cable being folded and put under the touchpad? i suspect it's that cable that block the airflow which makes it so hot on that part.
*
I don't think there are any cables there, see what I mean.

o.. that's not really what i mean.. i mean the one directly under touchpad but above of the wlan card, need to be opened together with the whole keyboard and speaker.
*
Oh, in that case no I'm not sure; didn't have the guts to take apart the studio XPS yet.

hi onyx_black .. i have a little doubt here .. regarding the CM notepal w2, it has 3 fans aligned in the middle of the cooler, whilst the sxps 16 is hot / warm around the palm rest area ... so does the W2 can really do the job well and make the palm rest area cool as well .. thanks  smile.gif
*
To keep the palm rest reasonably cool, you need some external source of wind to blow the palm rest area; I don't think a notebook cooler can cool down the palm rest area. I'm only interested on letting the notebook cooler to bring in more cool air to the base of my notebook and increase the efficiency of dissipating the heat from the heat sink.
As long as there's air flow beneath the notebook, it shouldn't be a problem.

My SXPS 16 arrived today!

But how do I check whether dell gave me the right optical drive or not?
My specs includes the blu-ray ROM

The current driver name is "HL - DT - ST DVDRWBD CA10N ATA Device"
*
If you launch My Computer you'll see your optical drive as BD-ROM Drive (X:) where X is your drive letter.
The hardware name for my Blue-Ray drive is listed as "Optiarc DVDRWBD BC-5600S ATA Device".

*
I noticed the new BIOS will regulate the fan speed more efficiently, instead of blasting it all the time.

Hey, I tried inserting a PS3 Blu-ray disc to test, but it ended up being stuck inside the drive instead! It couldn't detect the disc.
Somehow I managed to get it to eject after many failed attempts. sweat.gif

Got any idea what's the problem?
*
PS3 Blue-Ray disc? You mean the ones you used in a Play Station 3? Just insert a regular Blue-Ray disc.

I just got myself a XPS 16 last night. There seems to be some distorted sound coming out from the right speaker. But when i turn off the Soundblaster and IDT software....no distortion. Weird! Anyone have this problem?
*
I uninstalled Creative SoundBlaster Advanced MB, because there's no need for 2 audio management software.
Now with IDT alone I do noticed distorted music, but that rarely happens.
