hi guys..i juz bought da Studio XPS 16 yesterday rclxm9.gif ...get it for RM3800 (including 2% credit card charge)..

the spec is quite da basic one..

~ Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHZ
~ 2GB DDR3 ram (1GBx2)
~ 250GB hardisk
~ DVD+-RW
~ ATI HD 3670 512MB
~ WLED LCD (max 1366x768)
~ n others (tell me if i miss anything important tongue.gif )

did not hv any problem xcept i find it quite hard 2 fit in da laptop into the Timbuk2 'designed exclusively for studio xps' sleeve especially when try 2 zipped it (need 2 force a bit)..do u guys can fit it easily?

n juz wan 2 ask did the 2gb ddr3 ram is enough?my main task is microsoft office n some engineering software (autocad, solid work n etc) n right now gaming is not really a priority..

btw is da price is ok for my spec?don hv enough time 2 survey (as a result i juz found out that it only has 2 ram slots sweat.gif )..its quite 'love at 1st sight' case...lol

thanks n cheers icon_rolleyes.gif

today i saw Studio XPS 16 in person in lowyat.

overall very good looking laptop but i have some issues with its design.

pros:
the WXGA WLED screen is nice, clear and bright but 1366 x 768 too low resolution for 16 inch screen
the sound from speakers is loud and good drool.gif
lighter and thinner than other 16 inch class laptops thumbup.gif

cons:
the keyboard is too flat and i need more time to get to use to it
major design flaw; the LCD lid is blocking the rear exhaust vent ohmy.gif
i don’t know why Dell engineer/designer did not notice about this shakehead.gif
i saw pics of Studio XPS 13 that it also has the same problem

for XPS 16, there is 16 " 1080p Full HD WUXGA (1920x1080) available
no air vent on bottom base for left/right side of system, only rear side; design issue.
so user can't open the lcd lid more than 90 degree specially for XPS 13 which is small and compact plus hyrid NVIDIA.

Pal, your price with the specs stated above seems to be cheaper compared to the almost same web customized specs. I have sent RFQ to Dell HQ in Penang 2 days ago and this is what they quoted for me (already told them this might be my 3rd Dell):

Dell Studio XPS 16:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40 GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 3MB Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 32 bit SP1 Edition (English)
16" 1080p Full HD WUXGA (1920x1080) Anti-Glare RGBLED Display with 2.0MP webcam
4GB (2 X 2GB) Dual Channel 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM
320GB SATA 7200RPM Performance Hard Drive
Slot Load 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with double layer write capability
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
Intel® WiFi Link 5100 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card (MY)
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio Software
Dell™ Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (MY)
6-Cell (56WHr) Li-Ion Primary Battery
Designed for Dell™ Studio XPS 16" Sleeve
Integrated TV Tuner and Antenna
Dell™ ExpressCard ™ Travel Remote Control
3-year XPS Premier Service with 3-year CompleteCover & 24x7 support

Total RM5,600

Think this price can be further marked down right? Would it be cheaper if i get it through retail computer shops in Klang Valley? Appreciate some enlightenment guys TY. blush.gif

ya i know ....
But i do open more than 90 degree around 100 degree but normally on 90 degree.
I saw this problem once this unit come to me.

open 90degree will block 30% of the air blow.
that why it very hot, especially i play heavy game with full graphic.

I think one of you should post the photo of this issue in here.
so why decide should buy or not.

This unit must use with coolerpad.

any one know what is the advantage of complete cover.
Every half year can change any part inside ?

Well, I guess Dell engineers have their own reasons as to why they resort to such measures for ventilation. At first I was a little skeptical too but when I think about it there's only one reason I can think off:

Sometimes we tend to obstruct the exhaust ventilation, e.g. the notebook is too close to the wall, books are behind the notebook, space constraint, notebook on the bed etc. So in order to maintain airflow to disperse the heat (because this notebook is so capable of producing huge tons of it), Dell engineers design it in such a way that the screen is in the way of the ventilation outlet when the screen is propped open. Although it sounds contradictory or absurd, the hot air from the system still manage to escape. It's just the LCD panel is reflecting/redirecting the hot air to the top. In essence no matter how constraint your workspace is or no matter where you placed your notebook, there's nothing in the way of the exhaust vent, except the LCD screen, even then it helps redirecting the hot air to the surroundings. However, placing the notebook on the bed is still potentially dangerous.

This is just my wild guess, I'm no engineering here.

Since the amount of users/owners are growing, I might add an owner's list at the first post if need be.
What do you guys think?

hi Dackson..i think the one with RM3999 is with the lowest/basic specs such 720p lcd, no tv tuner, 250gb hdd, 2GB ddr3 ram n etc..while the RM4799 is with 1080p RGB led (which cost bout ~RM600 sweat.gif ) with better ram n hdd...

i notice that dell laptops price is quite hard to go down..had that experience when survey/watching dell xps 1530 price lol (thought the price is lowered but the specs also went lowered)..they mayb upgrade their processor abit but they still maintain their min price..if u try to put Onyx_black spec into dell website i think it still exceed RM6k biggrin.gif ..try put ur specs into the dell website mayb the difference is very slight or no difference at all..

anyway sad to hear your story..if u already fed up with dell i suggest u avoid HP..at least at dell if got prob their customer service is way much more better than HP..try look into hp pavilion thread as they also got quite a few issues..

btw Onyx_black how much do u pay for dell premium care?thinking of extending the warranty after feel the laptop heat (its quite hot)..anyway mayb diz weekend get the Cooler Master Notepal Infinite..anyone here using it for their Studio XPS 16?how is it?

thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello... I used the Cooler Master Notepal Infinite with Studio XPS 16 before... It is not too bad.. Help cool down my laptop slightly... Now i am using Zalman NC-2000 and my laptop is cool at the palm rest... U might wanna consider that since the warmest part is the palm rest when gaming or using it hardcore... blush.gif
