Dear all,

Many rumors said that if use PS3 to watch DVD, it will shorten the lifespan of the PS3.
I need some expert to provide some opinion and information on this.
Will it spoil the PS3?
And who is currently using PS3 to watch DVD also please leave a word or two in here, stated whether you face any problem or not after using the PS3 as your DVD player...

Please help!

Many thanks.

urban myth, IMO. just like how people used to say playing VCD on a DVD player will spoil the lense.

but hey, if you're worried, then yea, skip the DVDs and maybe stream the video from your PC. but of course, don't stream copyrighted videos smile.gif

I agree that it is myth. General wear and tear of course applies to the lense but i dont think it will die so fast sweat.gif

This is the same question about the xbox 360 playing regular dvds although i've yet to hear any wii-users trying to play dvds (they can do that actually laugh.gif)

thanks guys for all ur time n consideration...

u see, we all know tat all the optical lens wear and tear after let say maximum of 2 years... so it is acceptable n depand on ur usage also...
but many rumors said playing DVDs in PS3 will spoil the PS3 like instantly... which for me is ridiculars as PS3 claimed to b a one stop entertainment console...

i hope here have users which is currently using his/her PS3 to play DVDs and pass on thier experience...

Thanks.

cause dvd far cheaper then blueray movies , some of our community thinks ok " tgk sekali buat apa beli mahal2 " then they will support pirated dvd`s...and im glad nowdays people buy original dvd`s for their own collection.

glad to hear that at last some one using the PS3 as our normal daily usage...
yeah... at this stage the blu-ray still un-famouse and far more expansive, hardly get movie title... at this stage ppl still prefer to go for DVDs...
and we dun wan to put so many player in the living hall... we wan to set a one stop entertainment console in the living hall...
if there is a user who use it as a multi-purpose player without any side effect... means the PS3 rumors is bullshitting and some one create this to boost their sales in normal player... so now we can ignore it rite???

Thanks.

I play DVDs on my PS3. So far no problems at all. As long as you keep to oris, there shouldn't be a problem. Even a normal DVD player would kong out if you use it to play pirated ones.

Why worry so much!!! You should be the master of your console and not the other way round. The PS3 does a good job in upscaling DVD and it you are afraid of letting it do that for you, you are really wasting the true pontential of it!

It's not a myth, it's fact that playing any kind of discs will eventually wear out the lens. However don't be too skeptical on playing DVDs or BDs on your PS3, it's designed to play those for reasonable amount of time. But it's true that the lens will be stressed if playing badly burned discs, so try to avoid that. And don't left the lens rest too much (for like months) since it would actually deteriorate the motor and the lens as well.

it's a bloody myth that playing dvds with your console will wear out your lens! i have no idea which smart alec started this but its just so ridiculous.

think about it logically. the consoles are equipped with optical disc drives. OPTICAL disc drive! they are designed (and have underwent rigourous R&D and testing) to read optical discs, be it dvds or game discs.

if it cannot even withstand regular consumer usage, can you imagine the hordes of angry consumers ready to sue the ass off console makers, especially in the US or Europe? it is illegal in most western countries for manufacturers to advertise a feature about a certain product but it doesnt work as advertised.

but of course, all electronic or electrical stuff have a finite lifespan. they cant last forever. sometimes, if you are really unlucky, you get a bad product right out of the box. and then they are bad discs that make the lens work harder, shortening the lifespan.

but under normal usage, the average console optical drive should last you until the console is obsolete, regardless if you are using to play games or watch dvds.

benefit to gamers are just on the surface, imagine everyone buying pirated games, who else want to make games for gamers to play if everyone also buy pirated? use your brain and think before you buy it, i dont see benefits at all, imagine the disc you buy are not working after you bring back home and trying to play, then you have to go back and change for a new one, waste time and money, better buy an original one, as i said, quality ensure, you even have a game manual inside.

PS3 is not just a gaming console, it is a multi purpose console, it can do many other things other than playing games, it is also meant for playing DVD and VCD.

Taken from a website that noted the secret of ps3. rolleyes.gif

Note that the lens in the Blu-ray drive went through various evolutions as newer PS3 models were released. Many of the initial 40GB models (CECHG) used a cheaper version of Blu-ray lens, which had a high failure rate, requiring replacement.

KEM-400AAAThe original with single lens (includes mount).CECHA-CECHE
KES-400AAASingle lens using cheaper parts.CECHG
KEM-410ACAThere are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray (includes mount).CECHH
KES-410ACAThere are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray.CECHH

So newer model does not really to worry about wear and tear because reading uncle jack's dvd cause it has separate lens to read them. nod.gif

It's advisable not to watch dvd on ur ps3 , in long run surely damage ur lens and dont forget ps3 is made for blu-ray, even watching dvd with ps2 is not recommended as the console is made for gaming purpose.

PS3 got the upscaling feature which can make ur dvd movie looks HD (a dvd player with upscaling capability is not cheap btw) nod.gif

for a fact, I've been using the ps3 to watch dvd ever since i bought it coz of this (but never a pirated ones la). But during the ps2 era i've been watching my dvd on the ps2 too...and the fat ps2 still lives on now at my parents house playing games until now (even with my reckless nephew and niece playing it).

If ur lense wanna kong...it will kong depending on ur luck la...just like the 3rod n ylod...if it happens..it happens.

then why they still want to make it backward compatible? why they want to enable their console to run VCD and DVD?

ok, i know the reason why, because your lense will gone faster and then you have to fork out money to change the lense, profit goes to sony thumbup.gif
