The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus aka UNMC

Purpose of this thread:
This thread had evolved from a casual chit-chatting thread to a sophisticated area for FAQ's to current / graduated / alumna students from Nottingham to provide more information regarding the facilities and the campus itself. So ask wisely, and help each other.

Induction week can help you understand how the university's system works, and also to get to know some of your course mates, wouldn't that be nice?

how's uni accommodation right now? still very expensive? around 300 for single room? actually if you all have own transport, can consider to rent a room at sunway semenyih, the rental is around 500-600 per house. a lot cheaper.but nid to travel to uni. Or can choose to rent a house at semenyih town, around same price v sunway semenyih

reference letter? as far as i remember the person in charge didnt even bother to open my reference letter before they give me my conditional offer. What a waste of time getting it. anyway you should give them a call to see if the reference letter is needed....

I see i see. So maybe you dont have to stay from 9.30 to 4.30. Maybe some other courses have the same orientation day as registration day...-___-||
That'd be bad. Registration+orientation+shifting in hostel. =P

Hey guys, I am looking to come to Nottingham university Malaysia campus as one of the universities I have in mind. Although I am satisfied with nearly everything I heard about it, I have 2 concerns. The first is that I heard that you cannot get your own connection in ordered to go on the internet freely and download torrents, and watch live streams of stuff even if they are legal? Is there any way to get my own connection? The other question is the quality of the food, is it good or bleh?

Thanks again

Where are you planning to stay ? off campus or in campus ?

If its off campus, you are free to do anything with the internet and it is much cheaper compared to the connection in campus. Also, you can opt for Maxis broadband or Streamyx depending where are you staying.

Of course there are these restrictions if you uses in-campus internet. This is normal. Btw torrents is not legal lol as you download stuffs such as movies which are some havent be released in the cinema here..

For the quality of the food, lol ... if you ask 10 persons .. Im sure you get the same answer. It SUX BIG TIME Brother! biggrin.gif

Ok lets see. Its one of the smallest countries in the world, mostly gotten popular now because of Formula 1 events >.>. Oil country as many other OPEC producers. We have a really welcoming culture and most people are really friendly when it comes to outsiders. Its really hot! I mean now its usually 45 degrees Celsius and at night its like 36 xD. Well I dunno what else about my country to share I think it just becomes obvious when you get to know people from there. If its about me, then I am 17 going 18. I am in a private school one of the finest in the country. I am a martial arts blackbelt and member of the National team, I used to be ranked 14 i think in tennis but I stopped cuz of studies. I love gaming such as specially Starcraft, RPGs, action/adventure, fighting. About my education, I am taking the IB programme and I am a member of our crown prince's program for youth development (Only 50 people in the country! such an honor). Well thats just a breif biggrin.gif

Hi Everyone.

I have just graduated from MMU and joining at UNIMKL for MSc in E&E engineering for the coming Sept intake. I would like to hear from the seniors regarding the following matters.

1. As for MSc program of 1 year, I have to take 60 modules per semester. I am afraid to know hoe should I handle it or what should I be aware of?

2. How would be the lecturers of E&E engineering? Is there anyone to be aware of or avoid being in trouble? or who would be the helpful one?

3. Every universities got different style to survive or doing better in studies? What should I be taking care of to score more than 70% or how can I do better result?

4. Is there anything else, should I be taking care of being a student of E&E engineering?

I hope, my seniors would be kind enough to reply me with their best consent. That would be very beneficial and appreciated.

Thank you in advance and keep in touch.

The thing is at Notts we can take whatever course we wanna take, provided we pass the minimum requirements, but at the public U's the courses are selected for u. only 20% of the time u actually get courses that you really want to do. And yea places for non-bumis in public U's are limited

Though I am going to be a new masters student of Nottingham, I can say that Nottingham got a very reputable standing in the world. Importantly, most of the universities and peoples are very much well aware about Nottingham. It would be an honour getting into this university.

Should say we have the same breaks as UK universities and/or college , secondary and primary school.
Uni had longer break compare to others due to different final exam timetable.

Well, the room is small. You can switch on the air cond for 1 hour, and if you don't open the door or window, the air will still be very cooling inside!!!

Parking has plenty, only whether to get parking near or far only.

Well, if you can reach campus by the latest 8.40, then there shouldn't be a problem.

Just treat it as morning exercise if it's far. tongue.gif

You can might as well try parking at the sports complex; if you plan to head there (sports complex) in the evening.

if u rent a room (in-campus), u can gain access to uni's wireless but restricted.. means no games, no p2p, no bt..

u can subcribe to another package i think cost bout rm60+/month.. not so sure cz i heard from fren.

I know some people do not turn up to enrol for returning student, but then do we still need to enrol even we din turn up on the day assign?
Do we jus turn up when the lesson started and pay the fees? Or we need to see someone on the day we go back to the uni?

I'm planning not to go back on the enrolment day =x

1 thing bout nottingham very weird, remembered last time, they said enrollment must come, some of my frens didnt came and when class start only come back and fees paid after 1 week. Some even worst, pay the 1st installment at the middle of semester, the finance office said nothing, they will just ask u how much is ur fee then they charge ur credit card or u just drop the cheque.

so if u dun plan to come back on enrolment, make sure when the day u come back , go to the admin building there and ask around to register urself. if anything goes wrong dun blamed me ah brows.gif

The due date of payment for the 1st semester tuition fees is on 10 October 2008, so I think if you didn't go for the enrolment day is ok, but like what valiance said, do make sure you register yourself when you come back.

Tickets are free. You need to get it from the SA office, the yellow building.

Just that last time they want us to use, but still not many ppl use. Now I think they want to be more strict.

After the registration, I will be staying there or I just go home and wait till the class start? lol
*
Wait till class starts. =) You can choose to stay or not, depending on where you stay of course.

I'm looking forward to study in Notts this coming Sept. Wanna ask a few questions:

1. My course is Buss Econs & Management. How will my classes be like?

2. Where can I get my hands on 2nd hand books?

3. How far are the accomadation to the classes?
classes will be in lecture halls mostly

from other students/seniors.. usually will hav classified thru uni's email

depends on u staying in campus or off-campus.. near or far oso got

And after the registration, is there any particular activites that new student must participate or should participate?

Wow, you reply damn fast.

Anyway ice breaking and all usually happens on other days, not during orientation. It's not that bad.

Hi,

yeah, your course is not in the course code on our website. Probably because it is a new degree programme.

Hmm, I think you should give them a call:

I wonder about the photo for the student card... They will snap the photo there or they will use the photo they asked us to bring to the registration day?

And, when will we receive the login id and password to use the ISCRA/TISCRA computer facilities?

I myself havent taken the bus for a long long long time now. Again, if anything, most important is you have your student ID.
Or just say you are visiting the Uni, want to study there etc etc... whistling.gif

we talked bout this topic a few pages before this..

in summary, orientation is not compulsory, it is short (i.e. few hours for a day), fun (depending on wat games/parties), from monday till friday

Actually i just got a house there, 1200 only~~ partially furnish~~Near to campus (Full)
My advise to those looking for house is to go there personally and look for the advertisements themselves. I found this house by this way.

Ok, I don't know whether it's winter break or not...But I supposed there's a holiday in December right? It starts on beginning, mid or end of sept?

Frisbee Club. Come join us man. Check out this thread if you want to know more about the game - http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f=34&t=715427

Anyway, I think we really should make a LowYat Forum gathering since our numbers are growing here. Probably we all should meet up first, but still don't know what to do. Take photos? hmm.gif

Erm, we will have 3 weeks of holidays during year end, but exams starts after that, so your free time will cut short. Your year end trip is advised to be held immediately when the holiday starts and for a week is good enough. If you study constantly during your first semester than you won't have to do so much last minute studying.

Erm, not really so many holidays. we have no choice but to do for Raya and Chinese New year. The UK one doesn't have that, but they do get one week off for Easter.

ok, i read the whole thing starting from page 1 till now, quite a waste of time...
and also.... so far i read is that there is like almost everyone studing engineering, E & E and chem especially.
found a boy/girl (?) studying applied physchology, but is combined study with management.....囧……(dont ask me what word is this, just look on its shape)
how about MPharmacy.... anyone taking? the 2+2 course.
well, I am in that course anyway, and i think most of my classmate will be girl. Well, i like to see liang lui anyway.
hehe

and about the holiday.
so we have holiday during Hari Raya and chinese new year....
but easter holiday only 1 week??
so the holiday in this university is mostly according to the UK public holiday i suppose?
well.. quite good though.. cause last year CNY didnt manage to get any ang pao...
this year...
HAHAHAA
(okok, i admit that i am crazy now.... still havent start packing...)

P/S: anyone living in Edu square? RM480 d room soooooo small..... cant imagine how can i survive there..... T-T

I got the RM480 one too..xD
I think you rearrange the furnitures a little to create some space...xD It's small but it's sufficient for me though...haha..
Just that I need to add another shoe rack to put my shoes...=___= and probably some other essential stuffs...
I don't remember how big the room is already. But if you were to study overseas they would give u a hostel as small as this too..xD

Having problem with the internet now... The one provide by Extreme BB is wireless one. But, so expensive.... 384kps also need rm98 per month. And, in the form... I saw one Service Deposit-RM700 OMG.. Do I need to pay that RM700 deposit ah?

I might be taking Maxis/Celcom Broadband lo... Which one is better?

i) My course is Buss Econs & Management. Anyone who's going to read the same course as me?

ii) How will my classes be like? I heard from ppl that the classes will only be from Monday to Thursday, plus they are morning classes. Are these rumors true. I need to know this cos I live far from the uni and need to arrange the transport.

iii) I also know that the Bus from KTM starts at 9.00 am. Does that mean that my classes will start after 9.00am?

iv)I'm currently having problem arranging transport for registration on the 16th. Is there a possiblity to register myself on the induction day, which is on the 18th?

Hey Alex,

I think right, you can just show your nottingham card to them. Let them know that you are coming back from Perak and you do not have a bus coupon.

As long as you are a student I think should be ok. I don't think they will not be unreasonable.

i) Not sure, can't help
ii) Yeah, most business courses only have class from Monday to Thursday but it varies from subjects to subjects. Sometimes will have replacement classes or extra classes on Monday, but lecturers will discuss with the class and will inform everyone beforehand.
iii) Nope, that is not true. Classes start at 9 usually, but yet depends on subject. And there's earlier buses from Kajang KTM to Nottingham. I think 8.30 got one.
iv)I'm not sure, try to call the admin. Number can be found on the front page. But I think should be able, as long as you pay and appear, they sure willing to accept you. biggrin.gif

Hope it helps.

Guessed so... I'm out from the academy.

Back to topic, say like you joined some societies and stuffs, will those stuff appear in your grad certificate or not?

If not I don't see a point in joining anything.... unsure.gif Anyone can enlighten me on that manner?

I doubt so, but it you will have certs issued by SA/Uni. Clubs will ask for it, as companies need prove also that you hold some positions in your club/societies. You will definitely want to write them in your CV.

Holding president shows that you are good at managing people, and other position applies their own function of reflection on yourself as well.

Either way, some companies don't really care, cause they don't know how far are you really active/the club is really active. Might be president for just one year, and the next year, the club is gone. So it's subjective in certain ways.

Hope it helps and will see you in campus soon. Can't wait for class to start soon, cause that means Frisbee practice will soon be starting too. brows.gif brows.gif

Being a Malaysian you should know that since u were born.
The first week when i use it is resonable slow speed, then it get faster later.
But during may-june i stop it since its summer holiday,at the time the speed is so slow,it run with EDGE not HSDPA. Heard that they were upgrading during that time.
And the speed for now will be faster compare to b4 when i use it,few month ago.

Hello guys. Just registered myself today for the Electronic and Computer Engineering course. What are the choices available if I want to transfer to the UK campus later? I sent an e-mail to the admissions office but didn't not get any specific answer. Thanks

Anyway, I love the campus. The scenery is breathtaking and the campus looks quite new too. smile.gif

It's called... mobility. =) You can apply during the end of your First Year. Depending on the quota over there and your results, only a part of the applications will be verified and permitted to go to UK.

It's called... mobility. =) You can apply during the end of your First Year. Depending on the quota over there and your results, only a part of the applications will be verified and permitted to go to UK.

Thanks for the information. I hope I get to transfer to UK after completing my first year. smile.gif

Nope. You just need to register yourself during that timeframe, doesn't matter what time just as long as it is between 9.30am and 4.30pm. It took me about an hour to complete it today.

actual study for foundation starts at 29.

Actual study for undergraduate/degree holder is 22 September.

Erm, there's laundry service at the university and there is also washing machine at one of the accommodation halls. It's coin sloted machine, RM 3 per wash. Need 50 cent coins.

Hmm, should be. Isn't foundation's registration on the 22nd? If yes, then usually class starts one week later. Or unless later later. Cause during my time, foundation is always one week later than degree.

If u are new, they can't send it since ur email is not activated ..

I'm already on my final year. Yeah, class does starts this Monday but it doesn't matter since registering/paying of fees can be done anytime from now till 10 oct.

An Arabian (with arabian slang) went for a interview.

Conversation:
Interviewer: Hi, good morning, what's ur name?
Arabian: Abdullah XXX
Interviewer: Sex?
Arabian:twice a day
Interviewer: i mean male or female?
Arabian:Both male and female, sometimes even with camel
Interviewer: holy cow~!
Arabian:Yes cow and dog, too.
Interviewer: Isn't that hostile, man?
Arabian:Horse style, dog style, any style!
Interviewer: Oh dear!!
Arabian:Deer? no deer! they run too fast...

You need to go to the IT office in the computer lab to get your email and password. Then u can login to the PCs in the lab and use the email

anyway ..
Yes you need to go IT deparment ( IT labs level 2 ) to take your password and username. They give you a paper stating the information.
