The latest criticism of the QS-THE league tables came from Andrew Oswald, Professor of Economics at University of Warwick:[12]

"Such claims do us a disservice. The organisations who promote such ideas should be unhappy themselves, and so should any supine UK universities who endorse results they view as untruthful. Using these league table results on your websites, universities, if in private you deride the quality of the findings, is unprincipled and will ultimately be destructive of yourselves, because if you are not in the truth business what business are you in, exactly? Worse, this kind of material incorrectly reassures the UK government that our universities are international powerhouses. Let us instead, a bit more coolly, do what people in universities are paid to do. Let us use reliable data to try to discern the truth. In the last 20 years, Oxford has won no Nobel Prizes. Cambridge has done only slightly better. Stanford University in the United States, purportedly number 19 in the world, garnered three times as many Nobel Prizes over the past two decades as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge did combined. Hey, any ideas when the Engineering Research Building will be launched and operate?

I really hope it's not a white elephant despite its look.

I heard from my MEng ex-coursemates, they have already started to use the building. Don't worry it's not any white elephant. Dr Andrew (from sch of Mech) is incharge of the construction of the building. Dr Michael Cloke designed the process cooling system himself, for the chemical engineering school.
*
Oh really.
Bit curious, what's inside the building?
What equipment do we have in there?

Seriously?
LOL..
Haha.. maybe because the lecturers office of Mech Eng is in the Blue Building, where the pharmacy students usually appear.

QUOTE(kaka71 @ Apr 29 2009, 01:11 PM)
anyone living on campus has something to share? im considering to stay on campus next sem.. and.. internet is provided or what? can we like just connect to the uni's wireless network?
*
Redang resident here!
Internet is provided, but not free, and it's wired.
It costs about RM250+ per semester so is like about RM60 per month.
If you subscribe longer, it becomes cheaper. If you subscribe for 3 semesters consecutively, it becomes RM200 per semester.
Longer contract, cheaper lo..

So, doesn't sound favourable right? Wish to know if WiFi is available or not right?
Well, the answer is no. (But the end of the Tioman hall, which is very near to the SA may have la.. thank to the proximity to SA lo..)

Hence, most people do something like this.
They brought out their laptops (or use the TISCRA computers) to get online during the nights and only go back to the hostel to sleep. Like this, you do not need to pay anything but you lose the very privacy part where you can do video calls etc. without worries of people looking at you.

One catch about the WiFi and the internet service in TISCRA is..
Some games and ports are blocked.
I can't play Poker using their lines but it's alright for my wired connection in my room.
Also, some of the downloading websites are limited (not blocked) by WiFi and in TISCRA while the wired connection has less limitations.
But, BT, eMule etc. doesn't work well with the wired connection. Some websites like megaupload, badongo doesn't work well, too. Mediafire and Rapidshare are the exceptions though (along with some less known file host sites.).
(But there's a catch in using rapidshare. You have to grab the line to download your stuff. If you want to learn more about this, PM me.)

IMHO, it depends if you wish to be more personal in using internet or not.
For me, yes, although I don't make video calls. And hence, I pay for the SNS service in my hostel

Sry, can't help much about NUBS, but I do know yr3 students and also PhD students too.

I can help with Mechanical Engineering Students. But I heard there's a lot of new lecturers now. You can still ask me regarding the lecturers too, coz I still do keep in contact with them.

The best lecturer (that's still lecturing in UNMC) in Mechanical School, imo, is Dr. Ng B.K. Any comments about him? Is anyone of you in his class? thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, internal combustion engine (ICE), etc..?
*
Oh, haven't had the chance to take his lecture yet as I am from the January intake - will only do my Thermo 1 during the coming semester.

For now, I feel Dr Woo and Dr Cheah (who are so far the two lecturers from the M3 Department that I attend classes of) are excellent lecturers. Dr Woo, though, speaks a bit too fast sometimes. LOL..

I believe these two lecturers have been in UNMC for some time, right?

Those 2 lecturers are ones of the best in UNMC. Wait till you get to Yr2, where you'll have to attend classes taught by the worst lecturers. Enjoy your yr1. btw, have you done ur presentation for professional studies?

For those who are thinking of doing the mobility in ur yr2, just because you think the lecturers in UK are better, then you're wrong. Not that UNMC is better, but comparing UK campus and UNMC, some is better there, some here. But if you got $$, then go UK for the experience lor.
*
Professional Studies will be in my Summer semester.

I am surprised that you said the UNMC has not much difference with the UK campus. Can you explain more?
So, given Nottingham in UK is quite an 'okay' university, so can I expect (but not generalise) that universities that are performing lower than Nottingham in the rankings is worse than UNMC?
