anyone living on campus has something to share? im considering to stay on campus next sem.. and.. internet is provided or what? can we like just connect to the uni's wireless network?
Redang resident here!
Internet is provided, but not free, and it's wired.
It costs about RM250+ per semester so is like about RM60 per month.
If you subscribe longer, it becomes cheaper. If you subscribe for 3 semesters consecutively, it becomes RM200 per semester.
Longer contract, cheaper lo..
So, doesn't sound favourable right? Wish to know if WiFi is available or not right?
Well, the answer is no. (But the end of the Tioman hall, which is very near to the SA may have la.. thank to the proximity to SA lo..)
Hence, most people do something like this.
They brought out their laptops (or use the TISCRA computers) to get online during the nights and only go back to the hostel to sleep. Like this, you do not need to pay anything but you lose the very privacy part where you can do video calls etc. without worries of people looking at you.
One catch about the WiFi and the internet service in TISCRA is..
Some games and ports are blocked.
I can't play Poker using their lines but it's alright for my wired connection in my room.
Also, some of the downloading websites are limited (not blocked) by WiFi and in TISCRA while the wired connection has less limitations.
But, BT, eMule etc. doesn't work well with the wired connection. Some websites like megaupload, badongo doesn't work well, too. Mediafire and Rapidshare are the exceptions though (along with some less known file host sites.).
(But there's a catch in using rapidshare. You have to grab the line to download your stuff. If you want to learn more about this, PM me.)
IMHO, it depends if you wish to be more personal in using internet or not.
For me, yes, although I don't make video calls. And hence, I pay for the SNS service in my hostel
