UNMC Wifi Users Update -- IS will be stirring quite a commotion. QUOTE(IS) Dear All UNMC Wireless Laptop Users,
This is to inform that starting next Tuesday, 3rd November, we will be implementing the Bradford network appliance on our wireless network (UNMC) in Semenyih Campus (KLTC is excluded). All Windows and Mac laptop users will need to go through Registration of laptop and Installation of Bradford Agent in order to connect to the wireless network. The attached document is a step by step process. Kindly do as instructed which is only required to be done once.
If you use other mobile devices (e.g. PDAs) to connect to our wireless network, you will not need to do the attached. However, you will need to provide your MAC addresses of your mobiles devices to ITSupport@nottingham.edu.my in order for us to allow connectivity of these devices to our wireless network. If you face difficulty and require help, please bring your mobile devices to the IS Office starting next Tuesday and we will assist you on the matter. Time for *ahem* covert channels.

QUOTE(tanjinjack @ Oct 30 2009, 04:20 PM) QUOTE Time for *ahem* covert channels. What for? I thought the TISCRA is now easily flooded with people and more people prefer to bring their own laptops, and IS decides with things like this. And I need to go IS once for my N82. LOL.. And sometimes if we have to use the WiFi in urgency but have yet to register at nights, what can we do? Let's see: http://www.bradfordnetworks.com/products/cm.htmlQUOTE(From official website) * Check operating system type and patch levels * Check anti-virus application type and definition version levels * Check to ensure anti-spyware applications are installed * Connection-based scanning upon network access
Campus Manager’s endpoint compliance functionality performs three significant functions:
* Every device is checked before being allowed to connect to the production network * Non-compliant ‘at risk’ devices are isolated in a “Quarantine” area * The Remediation Center provides ‘self-help’ services to resolve issues without helpdesk intervention * Enforce acceptable network use policies * Control chatting, gaming and file sharing * Limit bandwidth usage * Interface with IDS, traffic shapers, and other external devices Basically it's like installing a remote monitoring software on your laptop and controlling your every move. ^ Lol, what site you use to dl anime in campus? I thought they blocked quite a few. The only way to bypass this as said by my fellow coursemate vailance is to get maxisBB or DigiBB. Don't install the friggin thing. You can disable it, I bet, just that you can't surf the net, which defeats the purpose of installing it. So what's the point If they disable tunneling too... then we're literally screwed. Added on October 30, 2009, 10:29 pmBTW, there seems to be no client for linux... I wonder what will happen if I go up to IS and say, so how my linux box no need access internet ah? (I might dualboot linux since I already abandoned my Hackintosh project anyway) This post has been edited by eXPeri3nc3: Oct 30 2009, 10:29 PM

Downloading e-book is legal (besides the one in UNIMLOC)? Because the last time I used RS in campus they capped the speed to like 10kbps. I have streamyx at TTS2 so I don't bother now.

QUOTE(tanjinjack @ Oct 31 2009, 01:52 AM) Any ideas on what can we do if we were to protest this? Do an online petition and mass spam to all. I mean word of mouth la if you don't want your owa to be suspended. ArianneG -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunneling_protocolLol IRC user eh... My housemate relies on IRC a lot. I go for direct downloads.

QUOTE(ArianneG @ Oct 31 2009, 12:33 PM) I like direct downloads too, but some of the file hosts are really-- headache inducing. Very frustrating. Especially with Megaupload, RS, etc. And when the file disappears overnight.... But I agree, direct downloads is still one of the most reliable methods. At least with IRC the file won't vanish on you, and books are fast-- songs slower, but some things that you can't get anywhere else, is up on IRC. True, esp. animes. QUOTE(tanjinjack @ Oct 31 2009, 01:33 PM) The only thing I find frustrated on megaupload, rapidshare is that the download slot is taken by others. So I usually opt for less known file host like hotfile, despositfile etc. BTW, haven't been lucky with IRC that my experience with it was somehow bad. I never really used IRC before also, so I just ask my hsemate to get it for me QUOTE(Batusai @ Oct 31 2009, 02:09 PM) ouch... i din know the $%&*%(&) tools monitor our computer... aikz... im hating it already... but the good thing is i seldom bring my lappy to go online with their unmc... sked virus... but i do use my pda phone.. dang.. gotta visit IS office.. wonder if they know how to configure.. Lol, so now you know XD

Well, slapping it with a RADIUS server and BlueCoat (which was installed 2 years ago), with the proxy server, you really think that they can't monitor you if they wanted to?
But yea, they will only do web monitoring, they won't really check into each single packets, but, if they want they can do it.
I saw the logs for the website monitoring, and yes, it's kind of scary.
Added on October 31, 2009, 11:06 pmI am making the educated guess that those who didn't provide their MAC addresses will be blocked from accessing the network, as if you're an outsider. Good thing for the University, but bad thing in case anything happens to you.

You can send to All Students, but risk your email getting banned by IS for abusing the email system.
Seriously, if there's a lot of misconception still after IS clarified from their latest email, I believe that a lot of the students will refuse to use the wifi service.

^ Lol Last time we are having bandwidth crisis till the point that we have to buy bandwidth from ExtremeBB. Now they slap in the additional bandwidth, awesome. Oh regarding Bradford thingy, I guess I'll leave others to try it first and see what happens... I didn't bring my laptop to university yet.

^ Actually, it's possible. Like your personal router, when someone connects directly to your router you can see their IP and mac address.
Bradford is like a bigscale one that's it. So how is it? Still ok, nothing much differs on your mobile surfing?

Just finish installing dualboot Ubuntu on my laptop. On internet UNMC now. No need to install. No need extra settings. Just that need to dc rc after logging in and prompted to install Bradford. Then a few bangs to the IP 172.* and managed to get the login screen. After login in got error saying that I can't login or some stuffs but after I refresh google it loads. Oh ya, here: Now updating Ubuntu. Woot.

QUOTE(debbieyss @ Nov 19 2009, 09:28 PM) I'm acquiring for postgraduate course and I was informed that one of the module is conducted once a week during office hour, for part time student. I mean, why doesn't this module conducted after office hour if it's designed for part time students, whom most of them are having full time job? I assume that it might be due to the time table availability slots. Our Uni's timetable is pretty fuzzy due to the room allocations, lectures, etc (subj to Faculties).
