Understand that quite a lot of older antivirus does not work with Vista properly. Actually I tried to install one, and it will not. What antivirus will you recommend? Kas.? Norton 360? etc.?

most current version of AV support vista.

Free : Avira Antivir, AVG, Avast, Rising (start to love this one)
Paid : Kaspersky, Norton, AVG Pro, Avira, McAfee, BitDefender, CA.

Why dont you visit AV-Comparative.org to see, which virus score the best. At least the result there base on approve methodology..instead of feeling o meter biggrin.gif

Personal Preference : I used to use Avira AntiVir Personal Edition (Free). Got same virus engine etc with paid version except, free version do not support POP3 which I do not use at home. Office use is a must (POP3 feature). However, last night, I uninstall Antivir and install Rising Antivirus (free too). This one is more complete, with HIPS, POP, VirtualSpace, and certified by VB100, West Coast Lab and Vista too. Currently doing full system scan...and it found 2 trojan, hidden deeply in my recursive 7zip archive. The best thing I love this rising, it is seriously light, lighter than AVG, Avast, Avira ...to name a few.

Ref : http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=213187

Paid Version...i will go for Kaspersky AV 2009. RM50 per license...with top notch protection. What else can we ask LoL. Last PC fair, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, 3 license only RM80 <drooling>.

AVG Free Edition... been using it for more than 3 years !

It does a 'live search scan' on Google, when you do a search in Google, it puts a 'green tick' to the right of the search results which are non-malicious, and 'red X' to those malicious sites.

I love AVG and will always... AVG + Vista = Virus free !

avg has this linkscanner option where it detect malicious netpage that will potentially harm your pc or laptop - it's a good feature where it will tell u its dangerous to surf to that particular website....

but for me ive always use these website so i have to disable the linkscanner.. lol

and then under ur quiklaunch tab the icon of avg will appear with a exclamation mark.. showing it doesnt run properly at its peak..

so not really a nice thing to see ( like the UAC icon for vista when u disable it)

im not sure about NOD32, hows the coverage and protection? is it as good as avg?

I'm using McAfee aswell , but I feel that the security or the scanning is not good enough as I have a few infected .dll files which they couldn't detect. blush.gif

I download the trial version once and it seems that I couldn't get used with their outlooks and placing.
It's just personal preference though.

Does Kaspersky really that good ? and How different compare to NOD32 ?

I Vote for kaspersky 2009,
uhm, sometimes a lot of pop up when deal with internet accessing,
and when u try to unzip a large file,
it will take some times as the kaspersky 2009 will scan the entire zip file before you unzip it...

Kaspersky is good in detections and disinfection..so is NOD32.

NOD32 is much liter, doesnt use much resource.

But then i say kaspersky is for beginners and NOD32 is for advance users.

The antivirus can only be as good as the user it self. If they know how to configure it well, they get the best protection.

kaspersky internet security 2009...buy it and u wont regret...AVG confirm no use....just for decoration...low ability to detect, more low ability to delete the virus/trojan/worm....

i used norton, trendmicro, avg, avira, bitdefender, gdata AVK, panda, fsecure and zonealarm security products before...keep on changing until i found kaspersky 2 years ago... rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

Are you sure? I'd rather peg Kaspersky for advanced users. NOD32 gave me little to no trouble when it was installed in the office network. Whereas Kasperky caused noticeable network slowdowns when installed. In fact, Kaspersky requires more time to configure than NOD32

AVG is useless. When u use avg same as u use nothing. I have do some experiment on antivirus, i tried Avg, avira and avast. i test each antivirus with locknut (simple phone virus but dangerous to mobilephone). and my result is Avast is no 1. Avira is the sec and the loser will be the useless avg.

Reason i'm not using avg:
-cant detect locknut smile.gif

Reason i'm not using avira:
-lack of security such as protecting instant messenger.

Reason i'm choose avast:
-got many security such as p2p, instant messenger sheild.
-all time protection.
-scanning startup and running program each time i open it.

AVG Free will run fine on Vista, but only offers base level protection only, no Anti-Rootkit protection for example.

I use Kaspersky IS2009 on a Vista 64 bit PC myself, and alongside Eset's NOD32, I reckon it's joint top for both low system resource usage and protection level.

PS. if you use internet banking, they often offer free AV for one year via a download link on their site. I personally use Barclays, and got Kaspersky 2009 Internet Security Suite with a 3 pc license for twelve months for free smile.gif icon_idea.gif

Was using AVG free all this while until it detected my Zone Alarm as a trojan virus last month. What happend afterwards was a living hell getting Zone Alarm uninstalled while AVG was blasting false positive alarms at my face. A boot to safe mode did the trick and I even had to download a Zone Alarm remover from Kaspersky site.

Then tested Kaspersky Internet Suite 2009 for 3 weeks and just bought KIS 2009 3 license for RM109. It's a bargain me thinks. I know last time can get even cheaper but the promotion has ended already.

---

BTW the problem was also faced by 3 of my friends and after a few google searches we found out that AVG did it intentionally to force free users to upgrade to their crappy AVG internet security product. So this in my book is not acceptable. So you fellas using AVG Free beware that they can do the same thing to you in the future.

Well, AVG Free Edition 8.0 detected FlashUtil10a.exe as a Trojan. Its a false positive.

First time ever such a thing happened to AVG, been using it for years.

Anyways, Flash Player 10 is still new - - a future update (on either side) should resolve the issue.

Tried Norton Anti Virus 2007, Kaspersky Internet Security 2008, Eset Smart Security 3, Spyware Doctor5, and SUPERAntiSpyware Pro.

Norton let go many real virus and keep annoying me every few minute saying it blocked worm intrusion.(Did worm really attk every few minute? Well I did not experienced tat with other security app.

Kaspersky 2008 provide great protection but it consumed too many memory, slow down my computer and my dwnld speed reduced by 30-50 kb which is a big problem for me since I always dl movie from internet.I tried installing it with Eset and I keep getting BSoD.Heard many ppl telling Kaspersky cant work together with many security app.

Eset Smart Security 3 was great because it provide a good protection and it consume little memory but I dont think it provide a great firewall and online protection and it let away some tracking spyware or adware.

Spyware Doctor 5 was great for online security or tracking spyware but it consumed many memory, hard to uninstall and will cause permanent damage on ur system if U didnt uninstall or stop the service nicely.I have a 1 year license for Spyware doctor 6 but now I dont even bother to use it anymore.
Edit 1: Recently the new database give out many false alarm when i give out so much memory which is why i abandone this crap but I only use it to cover up the tracking spyware lefted out by Eset in the 1st place.

SUPERAntiSpyware was never a popular app but I personally find it can remove tracking spyware effectively but the scanning is quite heavy and the auto protect is just crap.Only use this app to scan and nothing else.

After all this year testing the app I choose to use those app with low memory usage but can really remove REAL virus and spyware , ESET Smart Security 3 and SUPERAntiSpyware Pro but after I upgrade my com I will use Kaspersky instead of Eset tongue.gif .All this is just my personal opinion from using those security app i mentioned above and my combination will definitely let many virus and spyware to passby but can definitely removed by a full scan.(This is my experience in getting myself at least a virus/day and also because my friend like to spread virus to me =.=!!! just 2 day ago i borrowed a pendrive from them and there was 5x virus in it but basically the same virus.)

i hav move from AVG > norton IS > kapersky > norton IS> macafee TS> nod32 > bitdefender IS.

so far, bout 3 months using bitdefender internet security, it manage 2 repel all viruses.
Bitdefender manage 2 catch every virus, only once i hav 2 re4mat my pc after i accidentally set free the virus dat i "breed".........x_x

finally settle down after using bitdefender internet security so many trial........
i vouch for bitdefender now, but it does hav its weakness.
1) its not dat stable, the antivirus can crash or stop responding sometime.
2) ur pc spec hav 2 b a lot higher den recommended, if not, the lag will show.
