hi i m new to ps3. i can attach external hdd to my ps3 rite (with fat formatted)?

jus wondering wat can i do with ps3?
can ps3 play all sorts of media and audio files? like rm, rmvb, mpeg, mp3, mp4, ape, flav etc?

would it have negative effect if i play all these with ps3? thanks
