i just got iphone 3g few days ago bought from LYN member.
He said came from US unlocked with turboSIM i guess (checked at sim dummy it show gevey) correct me if i'm wrong about this sim unlocker.

Lets share ur test experience using this iphone 3g.

this my result

1. UNLOCK METHOD: Sim Unlocker (maybe turboSIM)
2. FIRMWARE: Update 2.0 to 2.01 (using PwnageTool_2.0.2)
3. SERVICE PROVIDER: DiGI (almost problem with error "no service" "network lost" if i go somewhere. have to duduk setempat sad.gif to get digi coverage. Perhaps baseband GSM Digi not fully support iphone 3g yet)
Here my solution.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

4. SMS: In Out (working out the box)
5. MMS: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
6. CALL: In Out (working out the box)
7. EDGE: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
8. GRPS: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
9. 3G: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
10. WIFI: (working out the box)
11. BLUETOOTH: Not working (cant see any device when searching. only logo loading pusing2 until when-when doh.gif )
12. OTHER TEST??

I am using an official unlock unit. No jailbreak / third party unlock. I'm a Digi unlimited data plan subscriber, so far Digi connection had been no issue.

neekun. r u using digi unlimited data plan mean postpaid rait? which version sim card digi did u used 64k 128k 256k?
is it any different between this kind of sim card. as fas as my experiment on my wife sim card digi maybe she using 128k i thought. because she alredy replace to new sim card when her phone was stolen 6 months ago. i got the different between my old version sim card that i used maybe 64k which i never upgrade since i subscribe digi on 2005. i tried on the iphone 3g, the different is better coverage than my old sim card. live longer till whole day.

on ur opinion should i go to digi centre then upgrade to new one version? is it digi have 256k simcard?

its not really the matter of 256k or 128k. due to using sim unlocker or bypass sim, it is prone to have network problem and some bypass sim just select simcard. not every type of simcard is compatible with bypass sim, as i learn it from jphone users.

neekun has different case than you because he has official unlocked i3g. while not using bypass sim, the i3g can take normal simcard and will be just fine.

@lotilor

How much you got it from low yat? Must have cost you a bom. You should have bought an unlocked 3G iphone as it comes trouble free and you will not face the sim problem as you do now.

Both New Zealand and Hong Kong 3G iphones are unlocked and also, there are other countries that offers the phone unlocked.

I had a previlege to jailbreak a 3G iphone (Hong Kong unit) for a friend yesterday. It was fun and indeed rewarding to see Cydia and Installer 4 installed in the phone.

Anyway, have a great time with the phone. It's an awesome phone.

Cheers

add australian Aifontriji units as well as they unlocked by nature. however the concept is the same as HK (sign a contract first and then worry about terminating later)

You see, none of this problems, or your attempts of troubleshooting, TS, would even matter if you know where to get the properly unlocked iPhone 3G. Which is why you see Neekun not having to break any sweat of worry at all. His will always be a fully unlocked iPhone 3G while your unit have to contend with mutilated simcard and whatever sim unlocking solution you're using. Which is also why a lot here are banking on the software unlock rather than the messy sim-unlocking solution you're using here because software unlocks have better chance of getting things right than simply slapping a circumcised simcard into a new "pants".

I pity those who bought into the whole slew of iPhone 3Gs in the Garage Sales section, all of them using this hardware sim-unlocker solution. It is not a solution at all, and in time service deterioration will occur. Calls need to be done TWICE, 3G data service either disrupted or made as "No Service" and you are always on edge because if your carrier finds out about you using this method, they can ban you for life from using their service.

Those sellers in Garage Sales are banking on your desperation to get the iPhone 3G to sell their wares. It is not a matter of "AIyahhh can make phone call enough la, what more you need?", the name of the phone itself is iPhone 3G, if you are not utilising the 3G part of the name, then you've squandered half of its possibilities already.

Sigh......people are sooooooo gullible and desperate these days.

Basically the iphone (2g + 3G) is not worth buying if you don't know how to use or maximise its potential.

of course i know that jakesean. as a matter of fact both optus and telstra have different charges to obtain the unlock codes.

but at least there is a chance to unlock them though it is getting relatively harder to do that (i have a friend scouting australia stores now as we speak but the prospects are looking rather dim)

@nokia2003,
I thought the unlocking is done by the Telcos, not the stores smile.gif A$80 for Optus and A$150 for Telstra. Optus I hear is out of stock so most of those who got theirs in the last couple of weeks or so been getting them from Telstra biggrin.gif

Your mistake will be rectified, somewhat, once the software unlock arrives. But then, you'll still need to play the cat-and-mouse game with Apple with regard to firmware updates. The HK and NZ iPhones dont even have to worry about this.

We should pin this thread, as an example how not to go the hardware unlock route. Which is the route most sellers in LYN are using with their US iPhone 3G, unfortunately.

I would just be repeating myself but I've posted what carriers are working under "My Journey for iPhone 3G" thread posted almost a month ago. The reason this wasn't a big deal is because the iPhone I got was fully unlocked, therefore no issues of coverage, 3G data and so on. We've moved beyond "Celcom works fine" or "Maxis doesn't have calls/SMS not working because they have not updates their celltowers" already, that had been discussed ad nauseum since the iPhone EDGE days already.

The reason why you are worried about your coverage or if your data works or not, lotilor, us because you're using a hardware unlock. Plain and simple. Software unlocks or fully unlocked iPhones faces no such problems as these. You will continue to face more weird problem simply because you opted for a solution that has not been proven to be conclusive and trouble-free.

The moment I inserted the simcard into the phone and turn it on...............it takes a while to turn on.......then it shows "Sim Lock" , a bit worry at first but realize it was the 4 digit code that we have to key in when we turn on the phone for the first time.

Everything works fine. No need to do any special setting. Sms flows in without a hassle. Wifi works as well.

The joys of fully unlocked phones. Lotilor, you can have the same , will just have to wait till the software unlocks are available for iPhone 3G.

Sharing my experience with my 2 week old iPhone 3G.

1. UNLOCK METHOD: Proxy/Adapter SIM (Not sure what brand, but I don't need to cut my SIM card)
2. FIRMWARE: 2.0.1 and will update to 2.0.2 tonight with new Pwnage 2.0.3, just found out today that they have released this new version.
3. SERVICE PROVIDER: Celcom. Usin 128K 3G SIM Card
4. SMS: In & Out working perfectly
5. MMS: Didnt install the MMS application
6. CALL: In & Out working without experience any call drop
7. GPRS/EDGE/3G: Working
10. WIFI: Working
11. YouTube: Working
12. Maps: Working like my old iPhone 2g. Wondering how to use GPS function.
13. Stocks: Working
14. Weather: Working
15. App Store: Working perfectly with my ME account

My only question to the iPhone 3G user here, since day 1 I'm using this iPhone 3G, Celcom 3G 128k SIM Card with unlimited data plan package, I only got GPRS icon which is square icon with hole in the middle. I never get 3G icon even if I'm at Celcom 3G area. Mind telling me your situation there TS. Why this happen actually?

Maybe because of:
1. I'm using the SIM adapter method? Anybody here using Official Unlock iPhone 3G with Celcom 3G SIM showing the 3G Icon?
2. Do I need to upgrade my 128K 3G SIM Card to 256K?
3. Or firmware 2.0.1 having this problem and I need to upgrade to 2.0.2?

Report on item 7, my data connectivity never failed me. I can connect through the Celcom connection using any application except YouTube that require WiFi. But I suspect I only use GPRS connection instead of 3G, which is Celcom doesnt have Edge.

I will try to update to new FW tonight when I got back home. Any other persons mind sharing their experience?

Your reports are contradictory. If you had only gotten the GPRS icon and not 3G when you are already a Celcom 3G Unlimited user, then your 3G is not working. The correct APN is "3gcelcom" with other entries remaining blank.

I am using the official fully unlocked iPhone 3G, and it shows the 3G icon every single time, unless outside of coverage, which it then drops to GPRS. Works fine since Day 1.

If your report is true, and you have entered the right details in the "Network" tab inside your iPhone 3G, then your 3G data is not working. This is one of the side-effect of using a hardware unlock method.

Ic, I set mine as "celcom3g" like before using my iPhone 2G. Let me try using "3gcelcom" and i will update in a while. Thanks!

UPDATE: Cannot use at all if I change APN to "3gcelcom". It appear "Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to cellular data service". Change back to "celcom3g"

If I am not mistaken, the APN "celcom3G" is used for those who had subscribed the data plan linked to a data card, like Huawei PC card and such. If you are not subscribed to this plan, the system will immediately drop you down to the next available network, which is GPRS.

That is the side effect of using any 3G piggyback sim, the 3G part is not working properly, but at least get the call/sms function and GPRS data service working. To reconfirmed the APN setting, test it out on any 3G phone.

Hi chlai..HK 3G iphones are fully unlock. If he can get a unit for you, go for it. It will cost you quite a big sum for the iPhone.

The claim that Youtube not working on 3G is not true, I have streamed and used Youtube on Celcom 3G connection a lot of time, it just needs a little bit more time to cache before your clip starts playing.

If it skips to GPRS instead of 3G, it could be either you're outside coverage, or your iPhone refuses the 3G connection (either carrier side, or because of your HyperSim/TurboSim).

To completely alleviate all doubts and misconceptions, get a fully unlocked iPhone 3G, or wait for the software unlocking solution.

i really want an iPhone 3G...so sad that i have no clue as to where to start and i definitely don't want frm day 1 in memorial an iPhone which is locked...best way to go is always an officially unlocked handset. ppl don't be fooled by the idiots at commercial shops in malls or anywhere sayin that its unlocked n all...must ask them how...there is a wealth of knowledge on the internet so before makin any hasty decisions always read up and research. i myself didnt rush to wanna get the prized handset, i've been following all the updates here there n everywhere from blogs to this and that...so i suppose everyone should do that, i wonder what else is the internet is for if not as a resource pool to help ppl in this 21st century!
i still want an iPhone 3G! hahaha
peace be with those who already own one!

Hi all...
I'm new here... I hope this is a suitable thread to ask. I just got my iPhone 3G official unlock... It comes with firmware 2.0.1. Everything goes right except for 3G. When i turn on/off the 3G enable settings, then there will be a popup 'Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in settings' with 2 options on the bottom (Dismiss & Settings). hmm.gif

But if i select dismiss, the coverage will continue like normal... I just wonder why the popup appear?

Anybody here also faced this prob?

hi zero_infinite,
Make sure you have a 3G simcard first.

I understand that Maxis need to reactivate again whenever you change the sim to a new 3G phone.

If not mistaken, is just key in *136# for 3G activation and send.
Hope this works for Iphone also.

Make sure you have a 3G simcard first.

I understand that Maxis need to reactivate again whenever you change the sim to a new 3G phone.

If not mistaken, is just key in *136# for 3G activation and send.
Hope this works for Iphone also.

Added on September 1, 2008, 12:02 pmHi every tai kor tai che,
Is anyone know that if there is any unlock 3G Iphone from Japan?

I've browsed through the thread, seems like the US unlocked phone really work. Is USD599, rite?
*
Thanks qtee,
FYI, i already got a 3G sim, since it is a new ones. I just bought it for my second no... Already key-in *136# for activation as well...

Actually, i can get the 3G signal in place. But i just wonder why everytime i turn on/off the 3G enable setting, the popup with 'Network Lost' will appear. Then i just need to choose 'Dismiss' for the popup, and everything will be ok.

Anyway, i think the popup appear because everytime i switch the 3G on/off, then the phone will search for new coverage. Unfortunately, my place got a bad signal for maxis and maxis 3g also. So maybe at first the phone cannot detect the signal. That's why the popup appear.

raycol97,
i just found out that the password is wap not 0123... 0123 is for sim card pin number... Correct me if i'm wrong...

zero_infinite,
Ignore in case you already know =P

If there is no 3G coverage, there's no use to force to select 3G in the phone.

Whenever no 3G coverage, usually will default select back to 2G.
(because 2G coverage is better than 3G for maxis network)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

anyhow, i got a question... a bit blur here unsure.gif
I've fren working in US now and she was telling me there are unlocked IPHONE which cost usd599...

but I read from the previous thread, that recommended not to get the US Iphone... do you guys mean that the IPHONE you bought (which is usd599) still requesting the unlock method before can use it?

I think what she meant is not "unlocked" iPhone, they are "no commitment" iPhones. These are available without contract, you can purchase them, and use prepaid plans on them, basically you can buy them off shelf without them Apple Geniuses forcing you to sign up for a plan.

The iPhone is still, however, LOCKED to AT&T.

stringfellow,
So you mean that I still need some genius to help to unlock it when it shipped to Malaysia?
ohmy.gif

I tot finally I can get one... but eventually....cry.gif

Added on September 1, 2008, 4:48 pmOne more question, I heard that the receiver for 3G iphone is not that sensitive.... anyone haved encountered this problem?

for eg, other phone user receiving is good, but 3G Iphone might not receiving clearly or it dropped to 2G or you cannot receive call.

No. The Genius I meant was the Apple technical staffs, they call them Apple Geniuses. All US iPhone 3Gs are locked to AT&T, even when you buy them without commitment ,a.k.a prepaid. They expect you to tie in your iPhone puchase with one of their plans, it is just that the prepaid plan is not as tightly controlling as the postpaid plans they have.

The Infineon 3G receiver chip is new and untested, and Apple is working to improve its reception. In Malaysia, if you just want to make a phone call, disable the 3G, and it will drop to normal GSM, and your signal bar will improve. Using it in tandem with 3G is where it is less appealing at the moment, since the signal strength drops to 1 or 2 bar, depending on area. This is not conclusive, as I have got instances where I get full bars on 3G while I was having my dinner at Chili's KLCC.

Aiks? Mine works fine, the push and fetch. Try setting it to manual and see if it initiates the push/fetch. Mine was updated instantly, just like advertised.

Of course, last time, it was a different story. I've had cases where my contacts inside the iPhone, after being pushed from MobileMe, lost all its numbers, only left names! But Apple fixed MobileMe since then, and it had been working fine since. *touchwood*

I've even tried the photo-upload straight to MobileMe, with options to publish them straight away on a gallery, which you can set it as public or private. Works like a charm.

Putting in www.me.com on the URL on the iPhone will come to a page where it tells you to access using a computer. It seems that you cannot access MobileMe other than on a computer, not an iPhone.

That only allows photo galleries. I'm rather keen to see if I could access files I've uploaded into my iDisk in MobileMe. Anyway we are diverging waaaaaayy away from the topic at hand. But still, probably relevant since MobileMe is part and parcel of the experience in Firmware 2.0.

This Network Lost issue is becoming a pain for me. Most of the time it drops from 3G to GPRS, what to do Celcom got no EDGE or at least I dont think they have. Funny sometimes I do see E coming out on my previous phone. Do we really have to wait for firmware 2.1, this is irratating especially when you want to use safari it doesnt work. I have tried both having APN with celcom3g and blank. Same result. Any Ideas?

I just experienced one of the common SMS alert bug on my iPhone 3G just now.

SMS comes in and no alert. So what I did is change to a new sms alert and subsequently all sms comes in and alert is working.

Seems like this is a common bug:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?m...975998

Let's see the upcoming 2.1 will fix this or not.

icebrew. I've been using celcom 2g gprs for 1 year (almost) since i use the iphone. No issue to get connected. The only problem is the speed really slow. if you are on GPRS , APN is celcom.net.my , if your are on 3G , the just leave the APN blank. You'll face issue if with the network drops to 2G or 3G or versi-versa, you need to change the APN accordingly. Or you can disable the lesser signal network temporaryly to avoid the network swithing. Try using BossPref. Hope this helps smile.gif

thanks man, i was on my 2g about a year too on celcom GRPS, paying unlimited 3G but using GPRS was a pain, anyhow no choice back then. I now reliase that the celcom 3g network is intermittent for me, cranky if you ask me. Hopefully with new firmware 2.1 it will at least better it. I have a question though if anyone could help me answer. I notice the 3G icon is sometimes blue and sometimes white. Wonder is that how it differentiates between 3g and HSDPA? If not how do you tell you are in a HSDPA zone, like Windows Mobile? Any clues?

EA have announced a boat load of new games coming to the iPhone really soon. The App Store has taken a lot of criticism since launch day about the quality of the applications and I have always thought it would take 6 - 12 months for developers to start to produce top quality apps and games. With this announcement at least it looks like we are going to see some great new games. The full list is Yahtzee Adventures, Mini Golf, Lemonade Tycoon, Mahjong, Monopoly: Here & Now The World Edition, SimCity, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 09, Need for Speed Undercover , and The Sims 3. Also Spore should be in the App Store this weekend, Sunday to be precise. Full press release after the break.

I USING IPHONE 3G 8GB
UNLOCK IT WITH A TURBOSIM
AND JAILBREAK IT FROM 2.01 TO 2.02 BY PWNAGE TOOL
USING MAXIS 3G
SO FAR,
CALL IN AND OUT NO PROBLEM
SMS ALSO NO PROBLEM
APP NO PROBLEM
SURFING WITH WIFI NO PROBLEM
WITH 3G ALSO NO PROBLEM
FOR THE APN....I JUST SET MAXIS 3G FOR APN AND LEAVE BLANK FOR USER NAME AND PASSWORD
THEN ENABLE THE 3G AND DATA ROAMING...THE 3G ICON WILL AUTOMATICALLY POP OUT OR RESTART IT AFTER TURNED THE 3G AND DATA ROAMING ON...THIS IS MY SOLUTION...AND IT CAN SURF REALLY FAST WITH 3G WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM......
I USED MY IPHONE 3G AROUND 1 WEEK ALREADY

Just this bro:-

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

The last KB we referred to , only periodically updated by Apple to reflect the lock/unlock status of the many different releases of the Aifontriji based on countries. There is also those part numbers at the rightmost column.

perhaps i can give more insight to rx330's statement.

malaysians are somehow not comfortable with the fact the iphone GPS map is not stored inside as for most PDA and conventional enabled GPS phones do not work this way.

hence to answer qsil, the map on the iphone (and also for the blackberry phones) needs to stream in real time over the net. however as mentioned previously, if you have decided to JB your aifontrigi, there is an app which enables you to store the map offline.

good luck!

Go into iTunes, the top apps, paid or free are listed on the rightside column. If you want further rankings on specific categories, click into those categories inside iTunes.

If you want to have a look at how these apps works, particularly games, before purchasing, search through Youtube. Many top apps from AppStores are reviewed on Youtube. Also use Mac-related website like Macworld and iLounge for reviews.

Selectt the app you wan to delete by placing your finger on the app till it wiggles..then tab on the app and it with pop up asking you if you wanna delete.

As for the mass delete contacts, not very sure if there's a app to do it. Anyway, do a backup of your contacts with Addressbook or Outlook and edit your contact list. Resync the contacts v iTunes.

I just noticed something not sure this is a new feature or an old one tongue.gif

Usually when I got missed call alert sms , the sms shows me the number who called me. With iPhone 2.1, I can see an arrow at the right of the sms, when touching it will show u the number and matches with your contact.

I found that this is really useful as previously on my Nokia N95 8GB I wont know who is the sender by looking at the number in the sms.

I am using official unlock from Singapore. Subscribe Digi Data unlimited plan. No issue on EDGE.. But, got i problem for caller ID.. Eg.. All my contact phone storing format as 0121234567. when there is incoming call. The Name is display properly. But for incoming SMS, it will display as +60121234567 instead of contact Name. If i would change the contact phone storing format to +60121234567, then incoming call display as 0121234567 but SMS display correctly with name...

Do u know that iphone3G comes with 1 years phone support. Just call Apple toll free Malaysia. Ask them to pass to iphone support team. That is all, after few days support from the team. They finally conclude that, the problem is due to the iphone is use under a non supported country that causes the problem..

For the time being, he advices me to add 2 same phone number format in 1 contact.. So stupid..

GPS direction is able to track your location, & when u r in a moving vehicle. U can see a blue dot is moving turn-by-turn as our vehicle move. BUT, google map is not support in Malaysia for plotting out the direction from Point A to point B.. Means, the GPS is useless in iphone in Malaysia..

Nope, it doesn't work cause Malaysia is an unsupported site for iPhone.

Here is how u can test out.. Go to http://maps.google.com/

1.Select "Set default location" to Malaysia
Then use the "get direction" to enter from A to B
You will get the same result as display in your iphone "the driving location cannot be found"

2. Now, change your location to Singapore
Then use "get direction" From Singapore to Singapore
You will find the driving location..

So, apple is to be blame. They are so silly...
So GPS for iphone3G is useless..

i'm in a pretty joyful mood to help despite having the signature below (i'm stuck to a pact)

for FW 2.0 onwards, there is a feature in "settings" to copy contacts from the SIM card (however there is no such feature for the vice versa way)

Me same issue with Digi. Digi incoming call in 01x1234567 while SMS in +601x1234567, thus save 2 num loh. For Maxis if i'm not wrong both incoming call and sms also in +601x1234567.

is it true that i have to activate my iphone from WHERE i buy it? cos i'll be asking my friend in NZ to buy back an iphone for me. does he need to activate for me in NZ via itunes or i can activate myself here in msia? since iphone is not officially launched in msia, u don't want Apple US to find u activating in msia since it hasn't been launched here yet.

am i right? xD

i just got iphone 3g few days ago bought from LYN member.
He said came from US unlocked with turboSIM  i guess (checked at sim dummy it show gevey) correct me if i'm wrong about this sim unlocker.

Lets share ur test experience using this iphone 3g.

this my result

1. UNLOCK METHOD: Sim Unlocker (maybe turboSIM)
2. FIRMWARE: Update 2.0  to 2.01 (using PwnageTool_2.0.2)
3. SERVICE PROVIDER: DiGI (almost problem with error "no service" "network lost" if i go somewhere. have to duduk setempat  sad.gif to get digi coverage. Perhaps baseband GSM Digi not fully support iphone 3g yet)
Here my solution.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

4. SMS: In Out (working out the box)
5. MMS: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
6. CALL: In Out (working out the box)
7. EDGE: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
8. GRPS: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
9. 3G: Not Tested (didnt subscribe)
10. WIFI: (working out the box)
11. BLUETOOTH: Not working (cant see any device when searching. only logo loading pusing2 until when-when doh.gif )
12. OTHER TEST??

Hi, i had also just got the iPhone 3G US version. it comes with the gevey adapter to unlock it. Mind to tell me how you unlock it via iTune to activate the phone before your first use? I can;t seem to get it done after reseting the phone. It could not detect my sim. I actually used it before, hence just tried to reset it... now... cannot liou..

Well.... a quite funny story to tell here.

Today I was being told that one of my colleague purchased an iPhone 3G (never heard from him about it).
And, he is totally ZERO-knowledge about iPhone 3G.... he was thinking to get Samsung OMNIA, but after
he tested out iPod Touch 1st Gen.... he gave up on OMNIA. his friends also don't know why... actually didn't
know at all until he showed his iPhone 3G to his friends.

I got to know from my colleague (same dept.), and he told me that the iPhone 3G has a "pelapik" inside the tray... when I
heard of that.... In my mind immeidately popped up "Gosh.... why buy it without properly info survey, but not the price survey !". Without
any doubts, I told them that is a LOCKED set unfortunately, and it has many problems using hardware unlock method.

I immediately send my colleague "About Activating iPhone 3G With A Wireless Carrier" PDF file, to ask him to check that
the iPhone 3G is from which country. Sadly, the iPhone 3G owner is totally noob, he has no idea how to check. I pity
him so much cos bailed out so much of money, eventually got a locked iPhone 3G.

I straight away headed to find the owner... and check out his iPhone 3G (16GB Black), and play around with it (btw,
none of them know that i'm using one laugh.gif) I kept telling him that he should have survey and gathered more info first
before acquiring any. Also, I told him many "disadvantages" of having hardware unlocking unit....

After some time of "interviewing" him on his processes of getting iPhone 3G... here's the concluded points :
** iPhone 3G purchased in Penang Pragin Mall shopping complex
** Quite high price at over RM3K+ (16GB)
** Using hardware unlock methodology
** He only tested to call and SMS (really a 0% noob about iPhone 3G)
** He not even dares to take out the hardware SIM from the tray as the seller told him if taken out, then cannot use doh.gif
** Need to cut out a very small (about 2mm) of square hole on SIM Card just to fit in the hardware unlock tool perfectly
** Seller told him to upgrade firmware or anything, must get back to him sweat.gif (really a businessman)
** Until the point I completed interviewing him, he only has less than 1% of iPhone 3G knowledge sweat.gif

Out of curiosity of my 1st time able to see hardware unlock tools, I asked iPhone owner's permission to allow me to see
the "pelapik". Undoubtedly, I poke out the SIM tray and see it.... really amazed me cos it is only a plastic-alike SIM shape
with some "electronics" things on it.
user posted image

Thereafter, I took another Telco SIM card and inserted, it showed "LOCKED SIM" on iPhone 3G. At this point, I confirmed that is a LOCKED unit. shakehead.gif

In order to pump him more iPhone 3G knowledge (although it is a locked unit), I open up the "About Activating iPhone 3G With A Wireless Carrier"
file to show him indirectly which countries sell "Unlocked out of box" and "Authorized Unlocking" iPhone 3G. After listening, he
immediately called back home to ask his mom's to check on the iPhone 3G box for the Part Number. (I also didn't notice
the Model number can be obtained from iPhone 3G itself). I checked on the file with the Part/Model Number of iPhone 3G he got,
surprisingly it is an "unlocked out of box" Singapore unit. shocking.gif shocking.gif

user posted image

Here's the interesting part.... the iPhone 3G is "unlocked out of box", yet the seller uses "hardware unlock method" to
"unlock" iPhone 3G for him sweat.gif doh.gif doh.gif sweat.gif That means, the seller either :
â— Blur blur sell iPhone 3G
â— Intended to cheat the buyer to gain more money by telling Hardware Unlock Tools things.

With the knowledge I have, I'm guaranteed that his iPhone 3G can be used without any hardware unlock tools. To persuade
my colleague on this (he was quite doubtful, as he is a noob still laugh.gif), I restore and JB his iPhone 3G with my MacBook. Less
than 1/2 hour, I managed to get his iPhone 3G activated, and uses it WITHOUT any hardware unlock tools.

My colleague is really really really LUCKY enough that bought an "unlocked out of box" unit by luck or by accident.
This is really an adventurous experiences he may have.... The luck is on his side I concluded that. biggrin.gif

To those who wanted to grab one of the iPhone 3G out there... hope you guys will READ, GATHER and SURVEY more info before
you make any decisions. Good luck lar then.... Hope you learn something from this story tongue.gif

May i ask a question here?

I am bringing in a Spore set iPhone 16GB.

the service provider said that it can be used in Msia for most basic functions like calls and SMS. However, some "technical" functions like U-Tube does not work in Malaysia because it is "locked" to the service provider.

My worry > will other functions such as Internet, MMS be working fine in Msia for this Spore set?

I hope pals here will reply here, please. It is a decision time. Please help.

many thanks.

mikehwy : I'm assuming you are referring to the iPhone 3G. Make sure you are getting a Singtel set from Singapore as stated in the sticky "A General Overview of Obtaining An Officially Unlocked iPhone 3G". Everything works, nothing is locked to provider. Youtube, Internet and everything else works perfectly.

MMS on the other hand is non existent on the iPhone. Don't ask me why. Ask Steve Jobs. But, there are ways to get around this and it is possible to use MMS like normal. Read around the forum once you get your phone and you'll find out how.

As a note, the senior forum-ers have already detailed in specific all about purchasing the iPhone3G and much much more so do take the time to read the stickies and existing posts as all this info is already available here. Cheers smile.gif

Obviously you did not read up [ Here ] , [ Here ] and [ Here ]

To your Qs... Yes, it can be used for EVERYTHING in M'sia, including YouTube and MMS (via 3rd-party App - SwirlyMMS). Why ?
Cos it is an UNLOCKED out of box unit for Singapore iPhone 3G units.

100% working.... Hope that reduces your worries. smile.gif

hey everyone.

i understand that unlocked out of the box iphones is the safest option provided u have the money to afford it wink.gif therefore i'm getting myself one set from NZ, which of course, is officially unlocked edy. and i've also read many reviews on fully unlocked phones that the users don't encounter any probs with them at all.

however my friend's giving me contradicting reviews which im very reluctant to believe. just wanna ask u guys' opinion. he says that his set of unlocked iphone from NZ work like illegally unlocked iphones-lotsa problem. how is that true?!

tell me it's not true. so i can peacefully get my NZ iphone without any worries and money WELL spent. =)

I just received an iPhone 3G from HK; the unlocked version. This is to replace my earlier 2G iPhone that was robbed sometime back.

It is working well, no issues here with the Celcom network. However there is this problem where the iphone appeared to have connected to my home wireless network as shown in by appropriate indicators, but it soon revert back to 3G or GPRS during operation. The same WiFi network is working fine on my PowerMac

It is also working fine in the WiFi network in my office. So this problem seems to be specific to my home WiFi which is supplied by a D-Link modem/WAN.

This appeared to have been documented in Apple's knowledge base (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398), and traced it to the MAC address filtering of the Modem. I have checked and found that the MAC filtering is not selected; so it should not be a problem.

I am still puzzled! Any ci-fu here can help??

if you want low cost 3G/GPRS wide range here in malaysia, celcom because it has wide coverage here, as for digi it only have edge(but soon will 3G).

as for maxis i believe outsite town dont have 3g, only have gprs/edge.

I just became a victim of unconscious gprs usage on my hotlink. I forgotten to turn off my data roaming yesterday because I was actually using it. Then a few small but multiple connections summed up to over RM20.

So noob...
