Hi guys, I just got offered an internship position with Keppel Offshore and Marine. According to their website, their address is:

Keppel Offshore & Marine
50 Gul Road
Singapore 629351.

Where is the place? Is it feasible to stay in Johor and travel there to work? Or is it better off to find a room in Sg?

I saw on Google Earth already. It's close to NTU so hopefully got student friendly accommodation there. Anybody know where to get accommodation around that area?

Any good places to stay near Jurong/NTU area? Can find a place for less than $350 or not? I was hoping since near NTU, more students means the place is less expensive

My passport expire on March 2009 but I am starting work on Dec 2008 with a training pass which I am in the process of applying. Do I need to extend my passport?

haha, now 3AM tired dy, brain not working right. Asked my friend and she say better get passport cos I am leaving the country anyways so I need a passport.

Now I need to find a place to stay. Tried sg-house.com but it's a very haphazard forum and ppl seem to just throw up their forum post there with a phone number and that's it. Tried easyroommate.com/sg but they don't have a lot of selection for the area I am going to stay in jurong west.

So any sifus here got suggestion for another website to search for roommate? I want to get rent below $300 and I figure the only way is to rent a room with another person. Datuk Google is handy, but It's hard to tell which sites are reputable. Like, if it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't know that JobsDB is more popular than jobstreet. This one have to rely on HUMAN INTELLIGENCE =P

Thanks in advance for all help rendered.

thanks man. I didn't know if less than 6 months then I will be denied entry. Cos few weeks ago I went to Sg and I was just nice, haha. Guess I need to go renew my passport ady soon.

Yeah but I really dun want to go through agent...cos they usually charge 1/2 month rent as commission right? That's why I look through forums or post up ads so that ppl who want to rent/looking for roommate can contact me straight then both sides also happy.

So far it helps la, got to know 3 places already but since I am only available December, most of them are looking for ppl who can move in sooner.

How come the job market is getting smaller ah? SG finally feeling the effects of the global slowdown?

is it? So can i find someone who currently has a room now and want to find a roommate? Would that person need a permit to rent out the room since technically he doesn't own it, he just stays there and want to share the cost with someone else? Cos I see a lot of ads looking for roommates.

now start looking for roommate ma...establish cable and see got ppl who are going there in dec or not. Don't want to get caught with pants down, haha.

I do read the papers everyday but i was reading this thread earlier and it gave me the impression that the sg economy is running pretty good. So I assumed there was some other circumstances causing the job market to shrink. It it's just the normal global slowdown then it's about time, lol. Here in Msia already feel it long time ago.

What are your guy's experience regarding these two matters:

1) Change from MYR-> SGD, do you get a better rate changing it in S'pore compared to changing it in JB? I read that if you change from SGD to -> MYR, doing it in JB gets you better rates. Not sure how the reverse applies.

2) Where do you guys go your shopping? I hear Fairprice is the only budget chain of shopping markets in Sg. Some of my friends go to JB every other weekend to buy groceries, but do you really save that much? I would expect the cost of travelling up and down to offset any savings that you might get already...

Thanks for the replies.

I think there's no stopping you. Msia gomen always so happy to be able to reverse the 'brain drain'. But you probably won't be granted Malaysian citizenship (if you let it go last time) so you won't be entitled to subsidized healthcare, education, etc. But the point is to make enough money in Singapore so that this wouldn't be much of a problem.

But mainly I think the hassle will be with immigration. I suppose there is such a thing called PR for ex-malaysian Singaporean?

From experience, mostly Malaysians in Sg do not give up their citizen...for the reason that at the end of the day, when it's all said and done...they'd rather come back to Malaysia to live out the end of their days.

Don't burn the bridge, once you convert, you can't convert back.

My friend is trying to get into Big4...she's a graduate from Adelaide Uni, Accounting, good in doing stuff related to taxation (I guess S'pore gov will love her). Is she going to have a hard time finding a job there?

What about working for Sg gov? Is there such a rule as only PR can work for them?

Anybody can confirm this? Let's say if you have a friend in Malaysia holding a Singtel SIM card and you sms him from Singapore, you get charged local rates and he will receive the sms for free. Is this true?

Before you ask me to go google it myself, I want to say that I have checked the website and it says sms is received for free, but it doesn't mention whether the local telco in Malaysia (eg Digi or Maxis) will charge money for delivering the sms.

So I want to c if anybody have tried something like this b4. Becos Digi say receive SMS while roaming in Sg is free, but my friend still get charged RM1 for every sms he receive.

OK thanks seantang for clearing that up. I suppose either Digi charges or that something screwed up the system.

I hope that they open up the network soon...the gov suggest to lower rates for calls and sms between Malaysia and Singapore, but now no more news.

Haha, my avatar is Leah Dizon la...

Looking around Jurong area (east and west). I found quite a few share rooms but all also need me to come up with my own people, so it's quite frustrating. Are there any other forums for people like me? LOL!
