QUOTE(BMW7 @ Nov 22 2008, 06:26 PM) A 300SL-24 is not special. I have one, with the 5-speed tranny. -24 denotes 24 valves, and being an I6, that's 4 valves per cylinder. Not exactly cutting edge anymore.Ok, it is special. It is a special moneysucking machine. It does nothing but eat money. Eat eat eat... c'mon, 40k this year already? WTF? And that's not counting the soft-top control box under the back seat, that's 5 large in itself. It was great when there was no R230, cruising top-down in the KL night. But now it's a lumbering overweight sluggish chunk of metal. Heaps of body roll, underpowered, absolutely no steering feel, even worse brake feel, tendency to snap into oversteer coming out of bends in the wet at full charge... I cannot wait for the car that replaces my R129 to arrive. |

QUOTE(phas3r @ Nov 24 2008, 05:16 AM) wow, so bad huh. but of course old conti cars definitely eat tons of money .. u have to know that .. but 40k a year is insane. and that's only for 300SL, not 500 or 600 SL the problem was not with the engine. it was with everything else haha.tranny rebuild, new bushes, control arms and dampers on all 4 corners, power steering issues, replacement of all 4 brake rotors and pads, dashboard irregularities, cat converter replacement, some respraying, etc... as well as the regular servicing. it was a great ride when it was working fine in the late '90s, and before it became an older model. on full kickdown, the engine had a real growl to it, it's surprised many other road users. unfortunately the sound never matched the actual grunt, and although it was slow to 100kmh, the higher gear overtaking acceleration was pretty good. and the car has an AMAZING turning circle, it can do a u-turn in tight places easily. other than that, it made a good nighttime bangsar cruiser top-down. it used to pull looks, but not anymore unfortunately. yeah will let you know what car replaces this sl when that car shows up in the supercar/exotic thread |

QUOTE(phas3r @ Nov 24 2008, 11:09 AM) you owned it since new? must be 500-800k yeah, owned since new.so somebody that buy ur car used has saved 40k for repairs? or is it another 40k to maintain it? u're getting the new facelift SL ah? near 1mil wo so somebody who buys it has saved 40k in repairs, but probably would need another 40k to get it to tip top condition. i mean super tip top condition, that car would be stunning. would probably need some bigger rims and maybe a bodykit to fully exploit its potential. no, no facelift sl. that car has 3 years before it gets replaced anyways, so no point. i'm not gonna get another sl for quite a while, we'll see how the next gen pans out, although i absolutely loved the pre-facelift r230. funny, before the r230 came out i actually had a dream about it. this was before any announcement, back in 1999 or something. i was wondering what the new sl would look like, and i went to bed thinking about it. the next morning i vividly remembered what i dreamt... it would retain the sl's long bonnet and stubby rear, it would have c-class' peanut lights, it would have the slk's vario roof, and the triangular rear light cluster, and mb's new curvy design language. what i saw in my head ended up pretty much as the r230, and damn did i want one. i came close a couple of times, but never ended up with one. a few years back, when the 300sl was giving problems, i was thinking one night of what kinda sl i would have to replace it. like, an ultimate sl that's not as over-the-top as a slr. so i went to bed dreaming again, and in my head it would be a r230 sl55, but i'd ditch the vario roof for a fixed cf roof, and have a full integrated roll cage that would replace the pop-up bar. it would be low, mean and with an exaggerated amg kit, with bigger vents in front, and a rear diffuser. it would be stripped out, racer-style, with a detachable flat-bottomed steering wheel, tons of cf and alcantara inside, and cf bucket seats. it would have carbon-ceramic brakes, and fully tunable suspension. and it would have a proper sequential gearbox, not like the laggy torque converter boxes mercs usually have. and lastly, it would have a retractable spoiler that would sit completely flush when not in use, and raise up when deployed (this came as an extension of the clk gtr's lil boot spoiler at the back. i never like the idea of a full gt wing, but liked how the veyron dealt with the problem). only recently did i find out that most of this ended up on amg's sl65 black, which seriously has to be the sexiest (recent) sl ever, apart from its auto gearbox... edit: my bad, actually the sexiest sl ever is the classic 300sl gullwing!
