This article is the reason WHY iPhone 3G is priced so expensively in KL, the case in KL should be identical to the Phillippines, until them Pinoys have their own official launch.

QUOTE
Several independent reports indicate that gray market iPhone 3G has landed in the Philippines. Apparently, there are plenty of them coming in from neighboring Hong Kong.

iPhone 3G Philippines

The price — a cool Php61,500 for the 8GB. The cost includes the mandatory 2-year contract from the HK telco (Hutchison Telecom) reselling the iPhone 2.0 for Apple. The 24-month plans in Hong Kong costs ~$64/month for the unlimited data plus minutes while a lowest plan only costs ~$24 a month but will have an initial fee of ~$377.

That means, a fully contract free iPhone 3G 8GB in HK will set you back (24 * $24 + $377) a total of $953 or roughly Php43,000.

In any case, you can actually fly to HK overnight and spend less than Php50k for the entire trip with an iPhone 3G in tow.

http://www.pinoytechblog.com/archives/ipho...d-at-greenhills

Translate that PhP61,500 into RM and you get RM4575 for 8GB alone. So, whichever idiot that buys them from the current cutthroats in LowYat Plaza, or in this forum itself, are paying for the seller's call plans. Even if it cheaper than that, you are also partially paying for the seller's plan, and he stands to gain more than you do. Do no fall into this trap!

Spread the word, especially to our fellow members in here, to stop them from being victims of greed from sellers here selling at these pricetags. They are selling them to cover THEIR OWN call plans! shakehead.gif

@d3vilzzzz,
Yeah I don't hang around iPhone forum because I don't have an iPhone so I wouldn't be able to contribute, nor would I know what U people are talking about [terms like PWN & Jailbreak was alien to me! - it still is v much though *grins*]

I came in to *8* and am thinking about getting one so I figured I better learn and do as much research as I possibly can now biggrin.gif

That is until the unlock arrives for the 3G. Until then, there have been hardware unlocks like sim cloning and cuting your sim card to fit into duped Sim slots. Solutions like these ran a good posibility of your carrier finding out what you are doing and they have all the right to blacklist you from service.

@d3vilzzzz,
Er... I'd been duped 'anal' when it comes to things like that but I believe it's best to find out what U can find out about the item before purchase; no point regretting it after it's been purchased. Also, with internet most stuff/information can be found online - it's a question of whether we want to take the trouble to do all those.

As much as I like expensive stuff [read: that doesn't mean I'm brand conscious], I also know the value of $!

While the stupidest pay the price? I usually say people deserve what's coming to them if they dont bother to find out, but I'd be more pissed at the gloating seller for the crapload of money he's making preying on gullible victims.

Hey guys, I'm selling the iPhone 3G at a base price of RM3000, open auction. Not too greedy right? Considering NZ's unlocked 8GB is NZD 929? Or am I asking for too little?

It's NZD 979, but why open auction? Why not set a figure and be done with? You'll be disappointing a lot of people with this. If it is eBay then, by all means go ahead. If it is our own forum, show a little love for our forum folks and give them a price you and them can win-win with.

Help me bump la hehe..

String: I dunno, it just makes more sense to put it as an auction because this is such a strange market. I would be quite content with RM3k but people are selling it for RM4k++ out there. Then again, I don't expect people with such a high disposable income to be here using LYN!! biggrin.gif

Anyway, I saw that a lot of people here want the iPhone 3G but either can't be arsed to spend RM 4k out there or missed your tumpang thread. So consider this a bit of a service to everyone, rather than on a first come first served fixed price basis.

Your call, man. It is definitely easy to set it as auction and watch the price go sky high as people bid on it, but IMO it takes a bigger person to let it go at a price you both can agree with. I've done auction sales before, and the sad faces I get , are not worth the money I make.

I mean, I can be money-minded, get oodles of NZ iPhone 3Gs with me, and sell them auction style as well, but that's business, and to me, a business is like trading, and you are required to provide some form of after-sale support if anything goes wrong. I dont want that responsiblity, plus it feels good helping people.

Dont get me wrong, it's your call if you want to make some money out of this. But if it were up to me, I'd rather settle for a thin margin but with good rapport and contacts all round, than a huge margin, but with people cursing my health(may be an exaggeration, but you get what I mean. tongue.gif)

And oh, please provide detailed info on which region you get that iPhone 3G from. US iPhone 3Gs are unlocked ONLY via hardware unlocks now, and you NEED to tell that to your potential customers. They NEED to be informed of the risks and complications of dealing with such unlocking methods. That way, you are partially absolved when things go wrong. Partially, not wholly.

I understand what you mean and you made some valid points. Unfortunately for me, I'm not in a financial position where I can write off a few hundred ringgit for the sake of good-will (if the margin would even reach such a level, no bids lodged as of yet).

Thanks for the advice on the region info, I got that part sorted..

Grrraaah! This is so frustrating *head desk*...*repeatedly*. The prices are sooo ridiculous. I've been semi-lurking in this forum for the past few months especially the Garage Sales and have been watching the prices go up n down. I'm getting seasick just reading them. 4.5K for a phone??? Granted a very NICE phone but common! That's a down-payment for a car!

What's worse, everytime I make the arduous trek down to LY to 'check out' and oh-for-the -love-of-God finally buy one, the bl@#dy buaya's grin their toothy grin and quote some random yet mind-numbingly high price I come ever so closer to losing my lunch...I mean do u want my first born child as well?? Kidding.

I want an iPhone so bad I dream of it in my sleep! *sob**pout* cry.gif

I actually had a guy pull out his 2G 8gig out of his pants and asked if I wanted it for 2.2K. Like eww, no. Its got your oily smudges and whats more its 2.2K for a USED phone complete with his natural microbial flora. Colour me excited.... OK, I'm not against second hand phones, just pissed of at the price and the utterly oily, condescending way he offered it to me. Just cause I'm not a dude doesnt mean I'm stupid. Grrrrrh!!!

Right....rant over. Thanks for listening. Not targeting anyone in the forum or anything, just hoping for some sympathy and a shoulder to cry on.....if anyone understands, its you guys here.

Oh and yeah, hate auctions, boss kinda looks at me funny when I head-desk at work. *double sob*

Nice rant. Most of the people that want iPhone will do what you did ... the head-desk thing. Offering a used 8gb phone for 2.2k is utterly nonsense. He's just taking advantage of the tock shortage situation. Its wise of you to come here and survey first rather than getting knock off later. If you have the patients to wait, the phone will drop in price.

Those are what AT&T call "no-commitment" iPhones, but they are still locked to AT&T. I dont have to tell how much trouble those who are using Turbo-Sim and its other cousins, are in right now.

Sooner or later, they will run out of people to subscribe onto, so they will be selling them outright, I think. That would most probably happen after Starhub and M1 got their launches. Starhub and M1 may themselves offer prepaid/no-contract versions of iPhones.

It's not as easy as you think, I live 10 mins away from a number of Optus shops, supplies are so limited if I walk in and ask for a prepaid/unlocked iPhone I'll be placed on a waiting list and chances are they're not going to keep aside more than 1 for me due to the demand.

Yeah...with this cut throat prices, i rather invest in a Macbook rather than iphone 3G..

I think we should all not buy, when demands fall tremendously, perhaps that force the sellers to supply at reasonable prices...

Hi Tinker,

I asked a relative in HK, i think HK iphone 3G rather expensive, it is priced at over HKD8000+ sweat.gif

I agree with Singapore sets...and NZ is the BEST thumbup.gif

@Kenix L,
I didn't do a price comparison; I merely suggested those countries because those places had unlocked sets available for sale. As to cheapest option.. well that would be NZ.. even SG isn't 'cheap' ! smile.gif

The situation in AUS is not the same as NZ, in fact the AUD market are clever to have stemmed the outflow of their iPhone 3G stock out from the country by enforcing the plan adoption first, non-plan later. It is not the same as NZ, NZ's only carrier Vodafone is required by law to sell them outright. Is is through this opportunity that a lot have taken advantage of to get their iPhone 3G here. A little bit of legwork, and it is not unlikely to get more than "just one iPhone" in NZ.

Along with the help of two very helpful LYN members there, it makes getting them pretty much easier than "walking 10 minuted to an Optus store and hope they allow a purchase for you".

Fair enuf, it's just that in M'sia as with any other country where it's not officially distributed the iPhone from a commercial viewpoint is very much a black market good so sellers should be able to ask however much they feel it's worth... while some may feel that their asking prices are highway robbery it's sorta hard to put a price tag on the trouble that one has to go through to obtain one. Optus has sold iPhones /w prepaid since launch, there is however a much larger quota allocated for postpaid customers as those are likely to bring in more revenue over time.

I was recently offered AUD600 for my 9 month old 2G iPhone by someone who was unable to obtain an unlocked iPhone 3G in time before leaving the country and this was more than what I had initially paid for the phone brand new including shipping from the US. He was well aware that Optus were selling the 8GB 3G for $720 + a $80 unlocking fee. Unfortunately with the hairline crack issues on the 3G I declined his offer.

I'm fairly certain that in time the US versions will be unlocked, when I got mine last year I was stuck on 1.1.2 and had to resort to using a TurboSIM for a while till someone figured out how to crack the 4.6 baseband... the phone is pretty much 'permanently' unlocked now.

I have a relative that will be going to Auckland, New Zealand next month.. where would she be able to get an iPhone 3G there if you don't mind me asking ? and how much is it currently to get one over there ?

Oh yeah.. I would also like to know whether you guys know any reliable places where I could repair the old iPhone that has the "half of the touchscreen can't work" problem and also replacing the battery in it ?

@supafreak,
You're oredi using the 2G one so don't bother with the 3G unless U need 3G. Speaking of which, I seem to have misplaced ur number so buzz me will ya?! tongue.gif

@Mandy Sim,
Stock status changes from time to time. It's almost impossible to check what is available a month from today.
