QUOTE(jazzy939 @ Oct 27 2008, 09:40 AM) Jazzy bro, I no can give technical support, so at least must contribute moral support lah. The volume pot is an eye opener....finally I'm hearing my T-amps without colouration from the Yulong DAH1! Only drawback is the output from the CA640P is too low....so it looks like I have to add in an active preamp somehow. Maybe time to invest a tube based preamp..... junchoon, okay got your directions already. see you later! |

bro March,
Nice to know that! Yes.. there's always 'colorations' added by anything in the signal path, its a matter of it being balanced or not.. Looks like the CA640P definitely needs a preamp. Is this 'tube based preamp' a commercial unit? Or you got one stashed somewhere collecting dust.. sorry guys, wasnt really in mood for posting in the last few days
seems like a great tt, will try to finish my smd replacement on the 2.2uf mcap unit but i dont have volume knob on them, 100k is a good choice? i think there is some 50k blue alps at home. btw, wow the f-elna sounded the best...haha...but must be with the help of the discrete component. Great! Your mood is back!
the coming TT is this afternoon! My 'passive preamp' is a 100K pot which works extremely fine.. since you have a 50K ALPS, give it a go. It might worked! QUOTE(xtorm @ Oct 27 2008, 11:26 AM) |

Junchoon,
Thanks for the offer but I could not make it today; perhaps next time if there is going to be another session. I gave Lai a ring on your invitation and he also said the same. March’s pair of HB2 and speaker cables are still in my office, should have returned them so you guys could play with them. You guys enjoy yourselves. Wishing all our Hindu friends HAPPY DEEPAVALI. It is my pleasure to join the meeting, and even greater pleasure to learn from all the sifus who are more experienced than i do.
As i am a newbie in hifi, hope to learn more from everyone here. Expecting more meeting in coming future. The T-amp is a real PERFORMER. never listen never believe, it can compete wit amp which is much more larger in size and of coz more expensive. Well for a budget player like me, the T-amp is the definite choice. For the tube preamp, the only reason not to go for that is "i listen ROCK music", quoted from jazzy. Well, it definetly drive me even harder to go for tube amp diy. Before that, lets stick to T-amp first. bsl is my sifu for tube amp from now on. bsl, hope u dont mind Another thing to mention is the speakers of our host, junchoon. What i can say is: Size does matter. Being exposed to small speakers all the time, a listening to floorstanders is another ear opening experience. For the source, nothing much to say as both players perform well. Except the track jumping in the Pioneer. Not to forget the mystery of ROCK music in the hall, sound is weird and kinda lo-fi. Thats something left to be solved. Another spectacular stuff is the DIY amp of junchoon's friend. Interested to know more about the internal of that beauty, the external looks superb of course. The sound: well, review is responsible of sifus One thing to clarify, the naked black t-amp is mine. The one with nice, smooth, silver finish casing belongs to jazzy. Again, Size does matter. Dont believe? ask the sifus Seem to be the longest post i ever wrote. Looking forward for the next meeting with u guys, expecting more participants then. Btw, jazzy. i found some 2n5485 and 2n5458 in box, which one suitable for the B1 buffer? |

wui,
thanks for the effort! yes.. long one, eh? We did try heavy rock with the soundstage tube pre-amp and my T-Amp.. it just doesn't have the right 'attack'... could be personal preferences or some limitations with the Yamaha floorstanders.. But, when partnered with the EPOS.. sweeeeet! The 2N5458 should be suitable.. not much diff. from 2N5457 I guess This post has been edited by jazzy939: Oct 27 2008, 10:03 PM |

thanks for the upload, Jazzy.
1st off, thanks for those who drop by: Jazzy and his son; Wui, March05 and a surprise visit by BSL. the latter brought his commercial tube pre-amp (Soundstage). here goes: wui's t-amp is well balanced, should be best for people with varied tastes in music. the Zhaolu review i will let him do it. bsl's tube-pre is great for vocal. when paired with wui or Jazzy t-amp can really bring out the the mellowness and sweetness of the female vocals. like most tube pre-amp, not really a rocker. Jazzy t-amp (it is a power amp) is able to drive the M16 floorstands well. the yamaha floorstands were rather temparament and bring out its weakness of power hungry drivers. compared with my friend's pre+po, the t-amps are cleaner sounding. one of the members mentioned this is the signature sound of T-Amp. but i would not say for sure whether i prefer this T-Amp sound over my friend's pre+po - i reckon the pre+po might be more suitable for long listening session. t-amp provide a lot of attention grabbing sound, might zap my energy or cause listening fatigue over-time. i will let the others fill the gaps on my review. cheers, wps This post has been edited by junchoon: Oct 27 2008, 10:06 PM |
