danial92,

good start for deciding on mask n fins and i suggest open heeled fins with booties. the booties walk u past all surfaces under the sun with comfort, most importantly, preventing u fall down or injure urself on the wet and slippery boat after dive.

i witnessed once a diver fell n hit her head on the beach onboard right after our dive.

I'll be staying at Laguna Redang on 21st March. laugh.gif
Imo, it's really up to you. The marine life at Perhentian is said to be better. The first and last time I went to Perhentian was nearly 6 years ago when I did my OW course, haven't got the chance to go back since. The accommodation was horrible that time I went but I wanna go back to Perhentian and try out the other hotels.

I go to Redang for diving these days cause the dives are cheap (RM50 per dive at Laguna) and I'm familiar with the accommodation and staffs there too as well. tongue.gif But don't take dive courses at Laguna, they are not very strict in teaching courses.
*
if i choose redang, might return to redang kalong for abt the same reasons as urs... stayed and dove with them twice plus i took my open water exam there.

prefer beach with less crowd, long beach in march should have less human and noices... might turn up at redang bay for dorm as travelling solo then...

QUOTE(EvanSoon @ Dec 28 2012, 01:32 PM)
Actually I have a question that has been in my mind for quite some time.
How much do you guys spend on diving each time including accommodation and food? + equipment rental?

getting my license soon (haven't looked for a place to do it) and was thinking of going for dives every month after that. But only tioman/redang/perhentian which is worth it to go right?
*
depends location and duration tongue.gif

dun forget sabah especially sipadan drool.gif

I saw some course on groupon. Around 1.4k, but i think you can get a lil bit cheaper than that. I took mine in Redang. Around 1.3k whole course
*
numblink suggested a good deal! not cheapest!! affordable... mr newbie to decide smile.gif

the goupon deal includes OWD and room, if i recall correctly

OWD at island, 3-4 days for around rm900
fan room or dorm, rm30-60/day
food, rm40-60/pax/day
kuala besut - perhentian, return boat, rm70

abt rm1400, OWD + 5D4N + food + boat from k besut

its run like a 4 star joint..
great buffet for breakfast, lunch, tea time(simple stuff) n dinner.. very good food but no seafood as its their policy..

I do not dare to open eyes underwater when I'm wearing contacts. Usually if close eyes very tight also eyes will sting a little but it wouldn't affect my contacts. I use daily contacts when I dive for more moisture and easy to handle. Anything wrong just open another pair. Few dives a day in contacts can make the eyes very dry.
i use contacts too, opened eyes during pool n exam confined dives... no problem rclxms.gif

anyhow, i use contacts during diving oni... so very clumsy wan
there s this shore dive being called last minute and rushing to put on my contacts,
briefing at outdoor while raining.....

after the dive n back to room.... i confirmed i lost both contatcts hmm.gif rclxub.gif doh.gif

Question.. Do you need a wet suit actually? Would rash guard be sufficient for OW?

*
EvanSoon,

my pov and limited experience...
wet suit or rash guard is personal preference and understanding of ur own body! I am 179cm but get cold easily thus i wear long sleeve wet suit laugh.gif other reasons for wearing wet suit are thermocline (temperature drops by a few degree at certain area) and jeli fish rclxm9.gif

i dove with lady divers with bikini oni til 18-20m... no issue

i oso dove with another lady divers with rash guard at 25-26m... shivering blue colored lips doh.gif

QUOTE(EvanSoon @ Mar 3 2013, 01:06 AM)
Question..

Also.. what is the first item that we should buy? what would be the 2nd and how do we determine which brand is better?
*
goggle and mask

fins - recommended open heels type... thus u need oso xtra budget for booties ***Get the lowcut / low top.. EXAMPLE!! I spend xtra time and effort wearing my present booties which s the High Top Booties rclxub.gif

Advantages of the booties, secure u while at the boat with wet and slippery floor, walk with more comfort thru stones and rough sands between dive centre and boat, HEAT on the sands, floor.... laugh.gif

QUOTE(pakutekan @ Mar 3 2013, 05:54 AM)
actually dive center will include the wetsuit with other equipment.. unfortunately, depeend on luck if u can get ur size there.. as for me, they dont have xs size for men wetsuit.
*
normally they hav XS.... but.... lady wet suit rclxm9.gif *just joking*

QUOTE(numblink @ Mar 3 2013, 12:31 PM)
Question no2: I heard mask and fin will turn hard if we don dive frequently. True? How to fix harden fin?? blink.gif  blink.gif

Store those gears in a well ventilated area

......

If it's only the course, it's around 1300rm for PADI Open water. + accomodation of 100baht (10rm) per day (basic fan room on 2nd floor of the dive shop). So it's around 1350rm. But there are lots of other accomodation like for 40-60rm (dorm or room with fan), it depends on your budget.

I was lucky, my first 5 day there was sunny and no rain at all, but the last 2 day was raining a bit but scattered during the day.

I took the flight to phuket, then have ferry to phi phi.

.................
*
local island should offer better deal, eg, Perhentian...

Course - RM900
Room - RM50/day for clean n above average fan room / dorm with aircon
Food - RM50/pax/day
Boat Transfer - RM70 (Return)
Bus - RM40, KL - K Besut
5d4n - RM1410/pax OR RM2620 for 2 persons

Tuna Bay cheapest is RM320 per night for triple room, RM250 per night for twin room. Breakfast included. So it's about RM220 cheapest for 2 nights for the rooms. Still quite okay if use own equipment, around RM545 if doing 5 dives.

Won't be able to do so many dives since only 3D2N. sad.gif
*
Tuna has many good review plus the "Live" good review by Putraskyline + Universal, also another place with many good review too (include Putraskyline) tongue.gif

Room RM320/3 pax - RMRM110/pax
for group, maybe 10 divers - RM60 - 70 (assume ya)

3d2n with 5 dives - RM570
3d2n with 7 dives - RM710

Foods for 3d - RM150

Car pool + Toll - RM200/car [enuf?]

5 dives a day wub.gif rclxm9.gif notworthy.gif

Going to sell my S95 with Canon Housing. Around 1.5 years old. Everything still in good condition. It has 2 batteries, not the original one as original one spoil edi, but 2 good compatible batteries bought less than half a year ago. Can last for few dives, even with recording video. Will throw in one SD card too.

I'll try to book for May first. It's public holiday + school holiday, and not very much in advance so have to see whether they got rooms available or not. Most of the hotels open for reservations since December last year.  sweat.gif

Will try to book either Mama's, Abdul's or Tunabay.

1. imran85 (1 pax)
2. munkeyflo (2 pax)
3. b5n111 (1 pax) - confirm upon date s finalised
4. numblink (1 pax) - if date ngam
5. tantalus (1 pax)
6. EvanSoon (1 pax)

I think need to get 3-4 rooms. Abdul's got only 3 fan rooms. Mama's has 20 fan rooms.
b5n111, can book aircond room if got anyone willing to share with you. biggrin.gif
*
which day of May that we r looking at?

If we choose Abdul over Mama, 3 fan room + 1 Garden Std AC room?
