See whether you want branded or not so branded.

Mask cheapest I got was RM70 and it's my favourite so far. Compared to all my other masks.
Fins also depends on what type of fins. Beginners usually don't have to get fins as it can be quite expensive. Around RM150 and above.
Wetsuit I prefer to get my own cause I don't like shorties. I prefer more protection on my legs and hands cause I scared the coral kacau me. Cheapest is RM350, usually around RM500 and above for good ones.

You can just go for rented gear for your first few times to know what type of gears you want. Then check out MIDE in July or so and get some gears there. smile.gif

If you wanna invest more into this hobby, then you should think about getting the full sets as it's better to be familiar with your gears especially underwater.
But beginner, I suggest just get mask and wetsuit first. Oh you can also just wear a rash guard and surf pants if you don't mind. Malaysia waters still okay, but oversea dive sites might have very much lower temperature so wetsuits are needed.

Can check out http://scubatexpro.shops.com.my/ as well. He sells pretty valuable stuff. I got my RM70 mask from him.

im short-sightedness. if i want to buy a mask, do i need it to be custom-made so that it suits my power ? then i am able to see clearly when im underwater.
my friend told me to use contact lens but im not an avid user of it.

Get a good mask (Silicone) and get your skills right wearing the mask and practice to get the water out from the mask most likely dont have any problem

I think there are goggles for short sightedness where the screen is compensated with various degrees for different levels of short sightedness. At least there was when I started scuba diving in 96. Check with TCE or other scuba gear vendors. I am sure there is, maybe you have to pre order them.

Then again if your short sightedness is not that bad, you don't need to be compensated as everything underwater is magnified by 25 percent. rolleyes.gif

There is mask for short-sightedness. I myself is short-sightedness.
When I first started diving, I went and get myself a pair of mask where they could change the lens to suit my power. It was around RM350-400, can't really remember. Did it at Sunway Mentari. Most of the dive shops do it and they have ready stock for these things, unless your power is super high like 800 and above or something.

But after a while, I gotten myself power-free mask as I prefer to wear contacts. Cause I would be blind on when I took off the mask and it would be hard to get a clean and dry towel to clean my specs so I can see properly. So I didn't like that and stick to contacts now.

However, if you choose to wear contacts, it's better to get dailies, as usually dive trips will do about 3-4 dives per day and you wouldn't really have the time to remove/change it every dive. I read somewhere that someone suggested to get two pair of contacts and change between it every dive as we have to soak the contacts for about 2 hour before wearing it again. As for the water sipping in to the mask, get the correct mask that fits your face, like someone else said, expensive doesn't mean good. It does sting if it goes in, but I just close my eyes very tightly, relax, wait for the sting to slowly go away and blink a lot with tears washing the sea water away. laugh.gif

I'm also using contacts instead of power mask. So far the only time i had issues with contacts coming off was when I did blowed bubbles into my mask while diving. 50 over dives and only 1 incident in 1 eye. So continued the dive with 1 eye.

No worries about it coming off, as long as you get a good brand, it should be ok. Don't go for fresh kon (ciba vision), damn useless.

I believed fins are depend on individual preference. Last month, before I dive at Bali I'm doing a research on type of fins that are good control and maneuverability. After read up review on forum and some articles end up with Scubapro Seawing Nova and my friend with Mares X-Stream. Both of us are upgrade from Mares Superchannel and Mares Quattro. Both of new fins are great and I would say its stress free. I could feel different from the upgrade especially on speed after 1 full cycle but frog kick feel a bit weird haha...Seawing at RM650 after 15% (Sealantis) and X-Stream RM510 30%(Scuba Dynamics).

Hi Putraskyline...

I already tested the back inflated system before. I dont know how to swim and I am not very good in water.. at the surface to be exact. The last dive I did was in October last year at Tenggol. Even with jacket type i still got probs in surface.

I feel more secure using the jacket type than the back inflate.
