Following the GTA linked murder in Thailand
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyN...lBrandChannel=0

Someone is threatening our pasttime
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...29371&sec=focus

It's always like this, the moment someone mentions that video games made them did it everyone forgets that it's an 18 year old, with a sound state of mind (as quoted by the police) that decided it was OK to stab someone, and just point the finger at video games!

I sent this response to the Editor.. wonder if it'll get published.

QUOTE
In response to the letter by the President of Consumers Association Of Penang, Mr S.M. Mohamed Idris.

I was reading The Star this morning and was shocked to find such comments being made by such a knowledgeable person.

First of all the crime was committed by an 18 year old, that makes him pretty much an adult in some societies. His reasoning for committing the crime was that he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game. Also according to the Reuter’s news report, police said the person showed no sign of mental problems during questioning.

My question is this, what kind of person with no mental problems thinks that it’s OK to rob someone, and then proceeded to stab the person while he was retaliating?

Why is it then when something bad happens and the criminal just makes a comment that video games made them do it that everyone points the finger at video games? There are so many other reasons for someone to commit such a terrible act such as this.

Why doesn’t anyone blame other possible reasons? Stress? Peer pressure? Maybe they aren’t that sound of mind after all? Rock And Roll?
Again let me remind the readers that the crime was commited by an 18 year old, not a 7 year old with a knife. If we believe that an 18 year old can still be influenced by a game that he’s playing to commit such terrible acts, when then can a person be considered an adult, when then can we make a person TRULY RESPONSIBLE for their actions and not point to finger to whatever the reason the person mention?

A voice in my head asked me to do it, rock and roll made me do it, movies made me do it, tv made me do it, reading the news made me do it, drugs made me do it, video games made me do it.

At what age then should all these reasons be swept aside and the blame solely placed on the person who actually DID IT?

To the statement that Violent video games and programmes have been linked to expression of violence and aggression, there are also reports that show that both are NOT LINKED to expression of violence and aggression. And most importantly all these external influences do not affect someone with a stable mind.

Video games are a great way of winding down after a day of work, or just hanging out with my friends by going into a match with an opposing team online. I’ve been playing games for most of my life and Yes there are violent video games, and I play them all the time. But I know perfectly well that it’s just a game, and would never even think that it’s ok to do what I do in games to anyone.

So don’t blame the video games, or the movies, or the tv, or the internet. Blame the perfectly sane 18 year old who decided that it’s OK to try and rob someone of their livelihood, and their life.

Signed.

CHAN WEI MIN
30 year old, father of a 1.5 year old son,
Violent Video Game Player.
Hope I didn't sound too aggressive.. tongue.gif

U dun sound agressive at any point. I'm only hoping the guy puts a rational thinking cap because bolehland loves to point fingers. Well, most of its citizens do so.

Only a fool who believes that a baby is still a baby even after the baby is already 21 or 30 years old for that matter.

adults reason by pointing towards games because they have no interest in it and the President of Consumers Association will follow the general consensus, but you have to look both ways video games do make unstable ppl worse

If the person is unstable, ANYTHING would make him worse.

And remember.. the 18 year old shows no signs of mental instability. tongue.gif

Pick the easy way out. Why spend lots of money and time to educate consumers on video game ratings, content and parental guidance when we could just call up the govt and say "Ey! ban violent games!"

good reasoning is it not? sad.gif

CAP is one of those useless "persatuan" that keep barking to get this and that banned.

Again it's sad to see ppl pointing fingers to a videogame because all of this hoo-haa.

All it takes is education.

Common ppl still associate videogaming with kids, when in reality, it is a business generating 45 billion dollars per year. Weird i say these ppl's attitude.

I know that CAP fella never touched a videogame once in his life, let alone GTA4.

Politicians and government officials who use video game violence to boost their own non-existent presence are massive wankers.

If this particular video game is available in Malaysia, CAP calls on the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to immediately halt its sales and ban this game. The Ministry should also warn the public and any stocks that have already been sold should be recalled.

the man has a right to act like that, what if the game was to blame for the murder stated above and the taxi driver was your father or brother you would want to first get revenge and then ban the game, the politician is just acting out the emotional state of that comunity its just politics

he is spineless so he plays on their emotional state of fear n anger by escalating the situation just to gain popularity from the community,if a politician who liked games and promised better xbox live connection etc you would vote for him or at the lest like him same thing

I'd like to get revenge on the PERSON, not the game. My main quip is the fact that people seem to be able to shed all responsibilities to their actions by saying a game made them do it.

say i walk on a street. i got a knife with me. i stabbed a guy and i killed him. the police came, i said to the police.

"that dog asked me to do it"

do you think the police will shoot the dog and not me?

hence the argument over blaming the game and the game gets the axe. same thing.

tongue.gif there's always Wii for those impressionable young kids tongue.gif

dunno what to say ler, kids nowadays grow up in a whacked-up world full of mixed messages. i'm sure local parents will appreciate some help/guidelines when it comes to "choosing" the right kinds of games software to buy for their kids. educating them on the ratings system/logo would be a good move. (when it comes down to it, the ratings are pretty similar across many regions US, PAL, Asian)

banning video game is not a good idea. why stop there? its not fair to blame video games. ban violent movies as well. no movies should be screened that involves guns and drugs.

Eh, Wii also will be banned. They will say that the kids will fight using the nunchucks and imitate Bruce Lee with the flying kicks and what not.

Or, they might say the nunchucks are lethal weapons for smashing tv screens etc.

CAP.....WHY SO SERIOUSSSS

I blame the parents. Look I played games ever since the age of 4 with the old monochrome screens. But without fail every evening my mom would take me to play badminton or swimming. When I got older I evolved and started playing football and even that my parents encouraged.

Nevertheless I still loved video games but knew my priorities because my parents thought me what my priorities are.

Parents should stand up, take responsibility for their actions and start paying more attention to their kids.

this line is the best from the letter:

"If this particular video game is available in Malaysia, CAP calls on the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to immediately halt its sales and ban this game."

sure does sound like some dude in CAP had a brilliant idea reading the report about the case in thailand. "why don't we suggest that we do the same in malaysia before anyone gets hurt?"

if i were CAP, i would concentrate on getting the people of malaysia buck up on consumer rights and proper customer service instead of calling for a ban on a video game that they hardly understand at all.

i also like the line: "Violent video games and television programmes have previously been linked to expressions of violence and aggression in young viewers. It is time for the authorities to act."

oh wow. no shit sherlock. says who? where are your facts CAP? where is irrefutable scientific proof? and for every study that CAP can google off the net, there are studies that says otherwise.

the bottom line is no one is sure what effects that violent video games (and tv programs) have on kids.
