QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Aug 26 2013, 09:44 AM) Good work Alchin. You got a good mulberry. But this specie got to keep on defoliating in order to keep it in shape. Other wise it will become a bush. My main problem with mulberry is the trees always get infested with a white kind of fungus. I had one killed by the disease. A friend told me it's not fungus but a kind of pest that helps to feed specific types of ants. I'm using insecticide to control. Usually below branches so I have to be meticulous otherwise the tree is a goner in a matter of weeks. This post has been edited by Alvchin: Aug 26 2013, 07:34 PM |

Wow! Thanks cjloong! You r spot on. Exactly as u described. Guess I would have to get rid of those ants first. I tot those ants r part of nature in my garden that's y I didn't bother much about them spreading. But since it's killing my plants I have a battle in hand. Now that I know the root cause I can start drafting my plans. lol thanks for your answer again!

Just to share another of my bonsai. Bought it about 2 years ago from San Fong. It was another hobbyist's work. Sold to SF & left as it was for a number of years. Claimed to be more than 10 years old when they acquired.
It was quite dense but a bit messy. Trimmed out unwanted branches & left to grow. But I always feel the tree boring. A few months back decided to take drastic measures & chopped off part of the tree. The last pix was taken yesterday. Any comments good or bad r welcome. |

Thanks bros! Great input.
Bonsailelong, windswept huh? I like windswept. I will do one. This one branches all over d. Cjloong, yes I agree the pot looks odd. I didn't disturb the roots much when I did my 'big' chop. Scared it hurts too much like my cucur atap. |

Yes that's what I do too. Now I'll try to snap pix from all angles & look at it whenever I'm free.
Decided to defoliate my mulberry & was I glad I did. The tree branches were infected still. I only found a piece of leaf that has those mealybugs. Use a toothbrush & copper brush to clean b4 I wash with water. ![]() This post has been edited by Alvchin: Aug 30 2013, 07:44 PM |

Thanks cj, was at SF this morning, the Asam jawa was huge trunk & probably needs lots of craft. I'm not that level yet.
Air layering huh, I haven't try b4 but looks possible. Hahaha. Ya leopard tree or raintree or tamarind all r new to me. So wish to lay hand on either or all if got the chance. I prefer to work on younger or smaller tree due to space constraint. Easier to handle also. |

Really not simple huh. 7 years to reach this stage. I will start tamarind from saplings so figure it'll be at least 20 years to become a bonsai if I'm skilful & lucky!
