Guys, I have a few air layer going now on my elm tree and sui mui. They are perhaps 1-3 inch trunks. Any takers? I am out of space and wish to get rid of them. They are about to be harvested in these few months time.

If it is my tree, here is what I'll do.
1. Develop the trunkline first.
- here you have 3 apex. Make 1 apex more dominant by reducing the height of the other 2. You can also cut the unwanted apex away. If not certain, just shorten first.

2. For branches, can reduce using the following guide:
http://www.cutebonsaitree.com/branch-rules.html

3. For nice branch placement, follow this:
http://www.bonsaiprimer.com/branches/place.../placement.html

BTW. Nice material, where did you get it?

Regards
cj

PS: One way I usually do is to cover the branches that I am about to cut with tissue/newspaper/cloth first. If tree still looks good, then cut.

Just curious, is there any bonsai with small pink flowers which we can keep base on our climate?

Mirten? (malphighia coccigera) - light pink

I think I saw one at Bonsailelong's house full of flowers before. Very nice.

bougainvillea pink flower variety (but larger flower)
pitchecellebum dulce (variegated) - new leaves are pink and white.

Lantana is a different species. Lantana have many different colors and leaf is soft. To me Mirten leaf is like fukien tea leaf except it looks pricky and deeper color. Leaf is hard.

Oh mirten another name is singapore holly i think.

I guess lizard should be good cause it eats bugs. Get rid only if you dont like them. Actually for me they go away by themselves cause i meddle on my bonsai too much.

Yeah.. Is there any special method to thicken trunks? Got jealous when i visit bonsai nursery (ming hoe yuen)

Plant in ground or let roots escape to ground. Thats the way.

Also, don't cut until its thick enough.

Hi
A bit hard to answer your questions but here it goes.

Excuse me, how many kinds of Bonsai?
> Many many types... In fact, any tree can become bonsai if you want to. Common in Malaysia is wrightia, cucur atap, juniper. Others includes buxus, mulberry, ... etc. Indonesia uses much more species.

Try this link for more info: http://books.google.com.my/books?id=2nF-bW...donesia&f=false

Which weather we can grow it?
>Depends on the species.

And how much is a 3 year Bonsai ?
>Depends on how it looks like. Remember, bonsai is art, so it does not depend on years alone.

Many thanks

Notice the purple wire? Its an aluminium wire bought in Daiso...not strong enough...i tot of bringing the branches to the front to form a loop..
You can always double wire. Also, if you don't water for a day or 2, its easier to wire. (do watch for wilt)

Sui mui is a tough plant. I frequently wash all roots, cut off all bottom roots, cut short side thick roots and defoliate and wire at the same time for first styling. Something i learned from a malay sifu a year or two ago. But i wouldnt recommend a newbie to do the same. I even carve out the bottom so that only side roots grow.

For you question, yes you can raise the roots. If you plan to do just a little, can do anytime. If major root wirk, do later. Let the plant recover strong first. It needs its roots to help in pushing growth now.

Bonsailelong, just wanna check with you regarding buxus harlandii. Is it pruned like the regular decidious plants? ie. if I prune to branch with no leaves, will that branch die back? If so, what is the best technique to shorten the branch.

In bonsai terms, 2-3 months is just a blink of an eye... ;-)

For me its like this, if I 1 week do 2 plants.
1 month = 2x4 = 8 plants.

In order to visit a plant every 3 months, I will need 8 X 3 = 24 plants. ha ha...

I do a plant a day though. Therefore my house is full of plants.

BTW. Do be careful about the wires though, now it is growing season for our plants. They grow very fast at this time.
