I think this is a repost. Well, if it really is, then let it be a gentle reminder for all of us

I've learned
By Omer B. Washington

I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you.
All you can do is be someone who can be loved.
The rest is up to them.
I’ve learned that no matter how much I care,
some people just don’t care back.
I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust
and only seconds to destroy it.
I’ve learned that it’s not what you have in your life
but who you have in your life that counts.
I’ve learned that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes.
After that, you’d better know something.

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t compare yourself
to the best others can do,
but to the best you can do.
I’ve learned that it’s not what happens to people,
It’s what they do about it that matters.
I’ve learned that no matter how thin you slice it,
there are always two sides.
I’ve learned that you should always talk to loved ones with loving words.
It may be the last time you’ll see them.
I’ve learned that you can keep going
long after you think you can’t.

I’ve learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done
When it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.
I’ve learned that there are people who love you dearly,
but just don’t know how to show it.
I’ve learned that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.
I’ve learned that true friendship continues to grow even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.
I’ve learned that just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.

I’ve learned that no matter how good a friend is,
they’re going to hurt you every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.
I’ve learned that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.
I’ve learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken,
the world doesn’t stop for your grief.
I’ve learned that our background and circumstances may influence who we are,
but we are responsible for who we become.
I’ve learned that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other.
And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do.

I’ve learned that sometimes you have to put the individual
ahead of their actions.
I’ve learned that no matter the consequences,
those who are honest with themselves go farther in life.
I’ve learned that your life can be changed in a matter of hours
by people who don’t even know you.
I’ve learned that even when you think you have no more to give,
when a friend cries out to you,
you will find the strength to help.

I’ve learned that writing,
as well as talking,
can ease emotional pains.
I’ve learned that the people you care most about in life
are taken from you too soon.
I’ve learned that it’s hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice
and not hurting people’s feelings and standing up for what you believe.
I’ve learned to love
and be loved.
I've learned...

Have a great week! nod.gif

Title: Heaven

You don't need no friends
Get back your faith again
You have the power to believe
Another dissident
Take back your evidence
It has no power to deceive

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive

I sit with them all night
Everything they say is right
But in the morning they were wrong
I'll be right by your side
Come hell or water high
Down any road you choose to roam

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive, yeah

Darling, I believe, Oh Lord
Sometimes it's hard to breathe, Lord
At the bottom of the sea, yeah yeah

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive
I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I don't need no one
I don't need no one, oh
I don't need no one
I don't need no one
To tell me about heaven
I believe
I believe it, yeah

"
A Simple Gesture

Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed the boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles. Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. As they walked Mark discovered the boy's name was Bill, that he loved video games, baseball and history, and that he was having lots of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend. They arrived at Bill's home first and Mark was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mark went home. They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years. Finally the long awaited senior year came and three weeks before graduation, Bill asked Mark if they could talk.

Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met. "Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?" asked Bill. "You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. I had stored away some of my mothers sleeping pills and I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others that might follow. So you see, Mark, when you picked up those books that day, you did a lot more, you saved my life."

Be careful when travelling along the LDP. Three days ago, this happened after the tunnel towards TTDI,
an old proton, with 4 indians, pull along side a lady’s car and gestured something behind her car.
Thinking that her car might have smoke or door ajar, she slowed down but she could not see anything
wrong. As she approached the traffic light before turning to TTDI, the Proton pull along side her and
said that she had knocked down a bike.

Unsure, she decided to turn to the Shell Station instead of the short cut through the dark lane
along the Petronas station. Noticing that the car followed her, she decided to move slowly to KFC
and make her way to the police station. Near the KFC, the car overtook her and accused her of running
away from responsibility after knocking down a motor bike. She slowed down and noticed that an
Indian woman came down and walk towards her slow, but moving car. She stopped and lowered her
window slightly while the Indian woman asked how come she did’nt see that she had knocked
down someone.

She told her calmly that she was going to the police station, she quickly wound up the window and drove off.
Being caught by 3 traffic lights, she noticed that they did not follow her. She drove inside the TTDI police
station and told a female constable that she had been followed. She asked her to report but she replied her
that she would do so if they followed her in. Noticing that they were nowhere around, she drove out and
move through the back lanes to her friend’s house.

When she relates the incident to her friend, she was told that the same thing happened to a
teacher’s son recently. The teacher’s son was stopped by an Indian lady driver along the LDP in an old
proton car. She told him that there is something wrong with his car. When he stopped his car and wind
down his window, 3 indian men came and forced the window down, opened the door and bashed him up.
They then forced him to the co-driver seat and demanded his handphone and wallet.

They then drove him to the bank and forced him to give them his pin number to withdraw the money.
When his son awaken to his shock, he fought them off by drawing the crowd attention. They ran away.
This incident happened a month ago using the same modus operandi.

I understand that, so far there were already 3 similar incidents.

QUOTE(nickster82 @ May 12 2009, 01:05 PM)
Since I came across this thread, I just want to comment and say that robberies had become so rampant recently. Even worse, the robbers would usually hurt their victims first just to immobilise them. The recent stories of the pregnant ladies being killed while being robbed on their bikes are saddening and brings much anger to my heart against those BL00DY robbers and murderers. I guess one lesson learnt here for all bikers is NOT to carry any handbags or things that may be snatched by these robbers on bikes!

Anyway, just want to share a few events with you that happened to my cousin and friend:

1) Last Tuesday (5th May 09), my cousin had just returned to his home at Sri Damansara at around 9.15pm. When he got off his car to walk towards his gate to close it (it was manual gate), there was two motorbikes that just stopped infront of his house and four guys with parangs attacked him. One of the guys slashed him in the left shoulder with the parang and he was bleeding alot.

As he realised these ppl meant to harm him and would get into his hse where his wife was, he immediately feared for his life and the safety of his wife. He fought back fiercely and managed to bring one of the assailants to the ground and kicked him. However, a second guy came and slashed him in the head! From all the fighting, he realised only 1 guy was standing there and giving instructions to the other three. He was like the leader and telling them what to do. Suddenly, he shouted 'Bunuh dia' few times and this caused even greater fear to my cousin and his wife. Upon hearing this, he fought even harder for his life and thank God...they suddenly decided to leave when the supposed leader said it was enough and to leave.

They left on their bikes and my cousin was then rushed to the Gleneagles hospital for treatment. He was left with 11 stitches on his shoulder and two screws to hold his shoulder bone together...a part of his shoulder bone was chipped off!  sad.gif  His head sustained 12 stitches! The doctors said he was extremely lucky as he could have lost his left ear and eye as the slash was near there. The shoulder wound was also inches from his neck and major arteries...if it severed any of these...he would have lost his life!

Thank God my cousin is safe and recovering now. Just want to warn all you ppl that these robbers are cruel and they will not hesitate to hurt anyone or even KILL for that matter. They have no heart and feelings! Those ppl with manual gates, we were told that next time...we should reverse our cars in as this will give us a better view of our surroundings when pulling into the house. Also, if anyone stops infront of the hse...we can see clearly and just drive through them for quick escape! (These was some tips given to us by the police and others) - BEST is to invest on auto-gate!

D@MN ALL THESE RUTHLESS THIEVES!!!  mad.gif

Yesterday (Oct 14) about 10.30 PM, my bro was in TTDI residential area when he was robbed by 4 malays on 2 motorbikes, with short parangs. He was okay, but called us about it and told us the robbers got the house keys, so we double locked our house doors. (Kelana Jaya). About 1 hour later, there was revving outside, followed by a lot of shouting. We stayed in the house, dad looked out from balcony, and saw 2 bikes with 4 guys with parangs in the street. Police came later.

Apparently, this bunch robbed my bro, went through SS4 and robbed 2 girls, then came over to my area, probably to find my house. Luckily we were prepared.

Sounds very familiar to the cases listed above.

May 2, 2009. Saturday: Life is a highway
While I was waiting in the taxi queue at the Budget Terminal of the airport this evening, a yellow Toyota of Citicab joined the queue behind me. The driver got out and ambled over when he saw me smoking by my taxi. He looked he could be in his late fifties or early sixties. He lit a cigarette himself and asked, “How is your day?”

I knew what he wanted to hear but I just said, “Fine. How is yours?”

“Not bad.” He turned his head slightly and exhaled a long trail of smoke with a smile. “I came out at noon and already got $180 in my pocket.” He volunteered his report card first.

“That’s fantastic.” I conveyed my performance to him indirectly. “$180 in seven hours? How did you do it?”

“I was lucky. I got seven calls today.”

Citicab and Comfort taxis hold a de facto monopoly in the on-call booking market in Singapore. This makes a big difference. Seven calls equal $21 in extra.

I told him that I was a new driver. During the two months of my driving career, I had never had any calls from my company. What he made in seven hours was what I would hope to make in twelve.

He was quick to console me. He said the business was generally bad at present. He had been driving for more than five years and had never seen things as bad as now. He usually made $50 or so a day after costs. Sometime just $10 or 20. “My kids have all grown up and don’t need my support,” he said. “Sometimes I go back after I had enough for a pack of cigarettes. I don’t have to work as hard as the other guys.” He pointed his jaw at the cabbies standing and chatting along the taxi queue ahead of us.

“Eight out of ten of them are not healthy.” He continued. “Kidney, heart, stomach, bowel. All kinds of problems. I have several friends who quit driving because of that.”

In fact, he said, he knew that a lot of old-timers had quit, because of the harsh working condition and the difficulty in earning a living. “That’s why many newcomers like you can have a chance to try out your luck.” He said with a friendly grin.

I remained wordless.

He ditched his cigarette butt and was ready to move. “I am not going to wait here. Waste of time. I am going back now.” He shook my hand and walked to his car.

I was driving on the highway back to the city a few minutes later. The man was right that it was a bad idea to wait in a queue that never moved. The traffic on ECP in this direction was very light. Cruising along the vast seashore with refreshing plants and flowers greeting from the roadsides, I was in a good mood.

True, life is hard. Especially after a transition from a veteran scientist to a rookie taxi driver. But life is like this highway. Sometimes it’s smooth, sometimes it’s rough. Sometimes you go slow, and sometimes you go fast. Sometimes it frustrates you and sometimes it pleases you. As long as you know where you are going, and never quit halfway, you will get there sooner or later.

“Knock me down, get back up again
You're in my blood, I'm not a lonely man
There's no load I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell them we're survivors”

This song began to flow into my mind. It is from my son’s most favorite movie, “Cars”, a Disney/Pixar animated film made a couple years ago. He used to like the song so much, that he often sang it around the house, with most of the lyrics made up by himself. One day, I downloaded, and printed out, the authentic lyrics from internet for him. He glanced at it briefly and put it away and never touched it again. He preferred his version better.

Since then, however, I found myself in love with this song as well. I hummed the song all the way to the city…..

Life's like a road that you travel on
There's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long
…..
