Is SPM English same with SPM English 1119 ? What does GCE-O stands for ? Is it same with English 1119 ? So confused

Ya... same one...

At the end, you will get 2 result for your English... One is SPM level, one is O-level.

But the result is different rite ? One of UK uni requirement is to have at least C for the Malaysian English 1119.. So, which one they are referring to ? SPM level or O-level ?

I suppose they are referring to SPM one... Well, not sure about that though.

From what i understand, 1119 is just your essay part and it was sent to UK to be graded.

The normal English is the normal one.

I have seen cases where an A1 English student scored a B4, C5 in their 1119. But some of my friends were able to get A1 or A2 also.

So study hard and aim for the best =)

Don't worry about your 1119 I took SPM last yr, both 1119 and SPM english got A1

I've already took my SPM paper, just wondering which one does 1119 referring to because English subject code is already 1119.. Some said 1119 is this, some said that.. That's why I ask

my friend said our Malaysian Education/Examination department hire or invite the British examiners come to Malaysia to mark the English paper instead of really sending it to real England, haha........... is it true?

i think it is quite logic becoz sending it to England is more costly than hire or invite the British examiners come here to mark........

Basically the 1119 grade is based on the marking of your essay by UK examiners hired by our Malaysian examinations board. You will also receive a certificate showing the grade you obtained.

1119 is an attempt at international benchmarking of the spm english........the actual spm english marking scheme is pretty lenient and easy to get high grades........it after all is a good example of the mediocrity of the lowest common denominator.......

1119 is the same paper being marked up to gce-o level standard, ie marked based on the british 0 levels scheme.........it may be by british examiners, or locals, but the important thing is not who marks, but what standard it is marked at.........

there is of course significant difference in standard between the two, the most extreme is someone who got a 2a for spm, and a 5 for 1119.........many who scored 1 or 2 at spm will be getting 3 or 4 in 1119......

Just because you got both A1s does not mean everybody will be in the same situation. What a sensible post!

actually to get 1119 A1 is not too hard. Anyways they hire British examiners to grade the papers according to the British O-level standard

I am a A Level student, if you want to get A1 for 1119, be in mind that you must understand what ang mo wants.

The fundamental skill you need in writing is to be mature and specific. Preferably you write facts rather than fictions. Write facts with concrete evidence, express your opinion very very very maturely.

And i tell you, even if you use very simple english, i mean simple vocab, you can get 1A already. But be sure that you are strong in your grammer. If your grammer suck, gone case...

I had this fren who scored A2 for his 1119 but only managed to get B4 for the normal one.

my teacher said if essy write killer sentences for pharagraph 1 and 2 and straight away he put in A1 box because the examiner too lazy to read all

1119 is only the essay part. Maybe he wrote a good essay but screwed up the rest of the paper??

1119 was tough for me but I passed.

Well if he can write a good essay, I doubt he would screw up the rest of the paper.
But well, I guess we can never know can we ?

1119 is O-Level English. Every students who sits for SPM English will have their papers marked by British and your essay (section B of paper 1) will be graded according to O-Level grading system. So don't be surprised if you got an A+ for SPM English but 5C for your 1119, it's common.

Anyway, 1119 English can be used to fulfill English language requirements of certain foreign universities, especially UK such as University of Bath. So if you score C6 or above you'll be exempted from IELTS or TOEFL.

Yes, the 1119 result will be printed in the SPM result slip, but don't worry it won't be in SPM cert. They will give you a separate certificate for 1119. =)

The 1119 is the subject code. The UK part is called the GCE OLevel.
English 1119 used to be optional as a part will be sent to the UK for assessment as the GCE O Level. However, since now it is compulsory, they would like to clarify the subject taken with the subject code.
So, the additional UK score is NOT your 1119 score. 1119 is the entire package, which would most likely be your English score.

Since only a section is sent to the UK for the O Level assessment, it is possible s/he got too focus on that section in order to score better, and let his guard down on other sections.
Therefore, he may have gotten good for the assessment but otherwise for the entire package.

i'm spm candidate for 2012, narrative essay is easier than others.

Well, according to my teacher who is a SPM marker, content doesn't give your marks. The marks for your essay is given solely based on your language, unlike BM where isi stands for about 35 marks. So, ya, narrative essay will be better because you can express your creativity and use all sorts of flowery languages which some factual essays restrict.

FYI,

You are getting 2 grades from an English paper you sit in SPM.

For one, they grade it according to SPM standard; for the other one, they grade it based on the GCE O-level standard.

GCE O-level is the one those international students are taking.

So, GCE O-level English refers to English 1119.

When examiners grade your English paper according to O-level, they will just look at your essay(s).

I wonder do the government/MoE really send out the papers to UK to be marked? hmmm.

Read more books / newspapers , watch more English movies and brush up on your grammar , then you're good to go .

I believe it'll be sent to trained local representatives marked to the standard of the O Level, or merely sent to the local Cambridge centres.
The fact that it'll be sent to any companies directly in the UK would be ultimately expensive, because of the high amount of candidates. Better start a research on this.
