Guys, i hope any of you iphone experts can advice me on this case, and here's the scenario. My uncle actually owns this iphone in which i think it's 2nd generation (i'm asking on behalf of him). It was fine for about half a year but just about a month ago it started to act awkwardly when he migrated from Malaysia to Australia. He said the iphone just freezes every 2-3 days after rebooting. And when it freezes, he can't switch it off whatsoever he have to wait until the battery runs flat, recharges the phone and reboot. So i was wondering if there's anything to do with software being outdated or stuffs like that.

Can anyone advice please? Thank you very much in advance.

cos its not a smartphone.... thats why....

just jk... i dont know either... but i can suggest you to tell him to remember what he does last before it freezes... that could pin point the cause of the problem....

if it just freezes when its not being used... then he better start saving up...

Since you said ur uncle owned it for like half a year, its definately not a 2nd generation (3g)... Its the 1st gen (Edge)... First thing first, try resetting when its freeze via press n hold Home+On/off button till it rebooted... if that dosent work, when ur recharged d phone after battery runs flat and boot it up, quickly do full restoration... guide is a lot here in this forum and tons on google on how...

it has been half a year, i consider it as the 1st gen iphone since 2nd gen is just around 2 3 weeks release back then. can u tell us in detail about the phone firmware it self? might even better if u can get the information of how the phone was unlock/jailbreak/activate. for the freeze part, press power button and home button for 7 sec and the phone will force to shut down (correct me if im wrong).

Whoa, doesn't sound too good. But well okey, he said that the last thing he remembered before it started to act like that was when he transfered the photos from his iphone to his laptop. He said he hadn't installed anything thus far

A force restart/reboot is never a good thing. Only use it when there are no other solution. Just like any pc or mac, when you did not properly restart/reboot, some system files might get corrupted. The same scenario applies to iPhone as its like a computer. Any system need to properly shut itself down to maintain the system stability.

Remember, only use force restart/reboot when you REALLY have no choice.

Wait for FW2.1 and installer 4 if your not fimiliar with cydia. Those important stuff can be saved if you know what to backup.

Hi there..

Sifu Frozz has explained heaps on it and i jes wanna added a few more on backup..if your uncle or you did sync your iphone frequently u'll see heaps of items are backed by iTunes such as phone numbers, calender, sms, ringtones and anything on natives applications of iphone. I think mostly those mentioned are the most important ones unless if u hv MMS Swirlly on which if u dont back up via transfer to pc or timecapsule u wont be able to find it on iTunes.

As for your problem..as mentioned iPhone is like a pc/macbook/computer so once awhile it does gives u a bit of problem and a fresh installation or restore would do good to the phone as well...for time being as mentioned too best u go for 1.1.4 FW rather than 2.0 as many applications has yet upgraded...if youre not sure how to restore(or ehems format(sifu jgn marah ye i say format hehe) do pm either one of us..more than glad to help u out..

Hv a good day.. wub.gif

Great advice guys, and thank you very much. Although i'm not familiar with Apple, but i'll sum this up for my uncle:

1. Download FW2.1 and installer 4
2. Connect iPhone to PC
3. Format the iPhone

is that correct?

Tumpang thread. I think my iphone unlocked using ZipPhone, so is it safe to update it to FW2.0 without the chance being bricked?
