Urgh, I need to expand my storage space, so NAS fits my requirement. But just wondering thought which one is the cost effective solution. 4 bays NAS is the aim. How much budget should I allocate to have at least 2 bays running with 2 X 2TB with RAID setup. TQ guys!

My Current Setup:
1. HTPC & NAS
HP microserver w/o OS = rm800
4 x 2TB WD Green = rm250/pc
1 x MS Windows Server 2k8 R2 standard = i got it free  tongue.gif
(optional) GPU (HD5450 / GT210) + 4GB RAM
Pros: cost effective, very customizable, speed is not bad for daily computing, Power saving, quiet and stable
Cons: Not much RAID option provided, need to setup everything by urself, the blue light from the HP logo very annoying at night

2. NAS
Synology Diskstation DS411j = rm1500
4 x 2TB Hitachi = rm300/pc
Pros: User friendly UI, quiet, power saving, wireless file transfer speed is slow but stable (better use LAN cable)
Cons: EXPENSIVE, first time RAID setup is very time consuming, my WD GREEN running on this system failed once just within 3 months and u need to contact online support to rescue ur data sad.gif now using hitachi so far so good

Thanks for sharing your info with me. That`s quite lengthy smile.gif

I have several questions thought;

1. So OS is required for the thing to run.. Can I have any linux OS to run instead? Cheaper right? Just wondering though in terms of the setup, will it be very difficult of windows users like me? Haha
2. So you have both running right now? Connected to GIGABIT network?
3. WD green failed, is it coincidence or incompatibility in 24x7 environment? Im using green for my 2TB and 1 TB harddisk. So far they are still good. Not running the PC 24x7 obviously. Now bit worried if I were to put in on 24x7 mode, will it fail quickly? Huhu

Wondering why, the DROBO is much more expensive compared to the other NAS? Better isn't it? Huhu ~ Was actually eyeing this, few years back when it was still not in Malaysia. But here, the price exceeds 3000 for 5 bays NAS.. Holy kebaboM!

Hi guys,

I am planning to purchase DS412+ and load it up with 4 X 3 TB WD drive. Just wondering what is the recommended UPS that could shut it down and turn it back online automatically.

Thanks!!

APC.  Others brands sometime work and sometime not work.

Any APC with USB port should be able to shut it down.

Powering it up, that one I am not sure.

Thats the thing..
Just wondering, how about wake on lan feature?

I m using basic model like rs600. If you have budget, you can go for higher.

Im having tight budget too, but I insist on having auto on/off as I am planning to leave it run with minimal intervention. Im just wondering whetther the RS600 that you mentioned has this feature.
Thanks!

Thanks all for the fruitful replies..

Just to make myself clear, for every UPS with USB support, the UPS will shutdown the NAS (during power failure) and turn it back on when the power returns? I am just covering the situation where there is blackout and the ELCB is still OK i.e. no lightning.

Also, whats the different between the safe mode and shutdown? Should the UPS instruct the NAS to turn off as the electricity is not available? Care to clarify the workflow? Based on the replies above, I understand it as below

Blackout -> UPS kicks in -> UPS instruct NAS to enter safe mode -> UPS's battery level reach low level -> UPS instruct NAS to shut down

Power returns -> UPS being charged -> UPS switch on NAS

So is my understanding correct? Thanks! smile.gif
