Anyone use custom build NAS around here?

My 500Gb HD suddenly can't be detected (already send for warranty and hopefully only firmware problem) and probably I will lost all the data. So to avoid any traumatic experiences in the future, I planning to get more than 1 hd and raid them. But I see that 2 bays NAS is expensive and lack of expandability.

I have one unused DQ45CB mobo, 2 x 2Gb ddr2 ram and casing so I think will be better if I build custom NAS from these unused items than buying a proper NAS. I know custom NAS consume more power so what is the best processor suit for this build?

Added on March 5, 2010, 11:43 pmOr the new Atom is the better? But it only support 2 sata.

Custom NAS should be ok if you are not running 7/11. Otherwise consume power alot. Use a low voltage and low speed proccesor.

You can buy a raid card to slot to expand your raid HDD. I ve a raid card which can raid 4pcs HDD. Using it 9yrs already and still good now.

What the expected price for the raid card. If like that, probably will opt to atom setup which use minimal power.

I m not sure what is the price now. Last time I brought cost me rm200. The famous raid card is rocket raid brand I guess.

Look for old low speed proccessor should be ok too. Cheaper ma. NAS no need high speed proccessor. 90% is sleeping. Unless you use it as pc too.

Yes. it consume more. That is why if you run 24hr, not practical. The 4bay synology NAS is just use 56watt when full load. Compare pc NAS power supply 250watt.
*
I think for atom it will not reach 250w but around 100 and below because NAS doesn't use so much energy. But true, proper NAS will be more nergy efficient than custom.

Synology quite pricey for me, is there any low-cost NAS?
*
Yeah, Synology also is expensive for me. Most low cost I believe only support 1 HD if I'm not mistaken. I need at least 2 bays and NAS with 2 bays is far more expensive. In the future if I need to add another HD, I have to buy another NAS. So that's why I plan to build custom NAS but the problem is with the energy consumption. Either way, it will cost money. I wonder why the price is so much expensive? rclxub.gif

I want to do raid 1 or 5 to secure my data. But all NAS with 2 or 3 bays cost a lot. That's why I plan to build custom NAS.

if u use custom NAS for everyday , the electric bill sure more than RM 50

From this review of TS-439 Pro II :

And for Atom D510 based setup :

From the review, I see that there is not so much different in power consumption in both build. I also checked that DS110J and DS209 have maximum power consumption of 19W and 25w respectively.

For custom D510 set up, if change the SSD and add 4 HD, the reading must be more than that, probably 10-20w more. But still will be below 60W which can be consider low. Well, I don't have first hand experience, may be I was wrong.

Electric bill won't cost that much. Max running only rm40/mth. But add up a yrs will cost rm480. Use this rm480 add up can buy a 2bay synology NAS.  hmm.gif
*
I also think about that. But it is really can reach Rm40/month? RM40/month for only running a custom build NAS, that really high. With my current pc spec (see my sig), my electric bill increase RM30/month when running 24/7. That's why thinking of reduce the bill with the NAS (with torrent function). But if it really can reach RM40/month, should be stick to my current spec la...

My calculation is base on running max 250w/hr. Which will come to 6kw/day and 180kw/mth. From TNB tariff, that will cost rm40/mth max. Of course your custom NAS won't run max whole day. Depend your software setup and hardware qty.

And do remember TNB tariff discount is for first 200kw. Your home consume more than that.

Last time, I use laptop to dl torrent 24/hr whole yrs. It consume less power which max only 90w. (base on the adaptor spec). Cheaper alot compare pc.

Tq, not really use with all these electricity calculation. Hmmm..will try to set up first.

I read a few pages back but still can't decide which NAS is better.

My department decide to buy a dedicated storage server for sharing files. The files include office files (excel, word, pdf etc.) and some video. All users (up to 6 users) use varieties of windows OS from XP to Win 7 and most have only basic IT knowledge so most probably they only know how to use ms office and internet browsing.

Currently, we are using shared folder but I found out it not really user friendly and some how slow. For some computer, it hard to get connected.

So, anyone can suggest me a good NAS or may be a microserver which is easier to manage and easier to access files from end userpc? Looking for 2 bays although 500gb of storage is actually more than enough.

qnap and synology should be good enough. Get the 2bay type for backup. Easy to use and can access anytime, anywhere and any OS.

My office and spore branch use synology. Have been using 3yrs now.

Which model you use?

Hi, just want to know, can I use DNS-320 to download from http or ftp? Currently looking for cheap 2-bay NAS (below RM300) for my muvie storage. Reading from the internet, I found out that NAS also can do torrent downloading, but how about ftp/http download? I mean download from internet to the NAS.

Thank you.

Actually, the Black was never marketed for NAS. I think you mistook the Black with the RE4 which is for NAS (like the WD Red).
Thanks for the heads up. Especially useful for people for pop in and who are not aware of the prices and what is the latest available from Synology. If one is prepared to pay the price of the DS412+, might as well go for the 5 bay 1512+ for a little more.

Anyway for people who are budget conscious and using simple file storage and DLNA sharing, the Synology does not make sense. As a comparison, you can get similar performance from the N36L Microserver with 2GB memory and equip it with 5 x 3TB drives in RAID 5 under WHS 2011 and you would arrive at the cost of a bare 5 bay 1512+ with zero drives.

Yeah, one can argue that the 1512+ has USB 3 and dual Gigabit ports. But with not so much money, you can equip the Microserver with a PCIe USB 3 card and a PCIe dual port network card in the x1 and the x16 available slot.
Depends on the capacity of the drives you select but RM 1k for a 4 to 6 disc setup is not possible I think. Taking the cheapest 1TB drives and you are already close to RM 1k.

If you're just looking for the enclosure alone, the HP N36L (not the newer N40L) is going for RM 699 brand new and it can be made to fit 5x 3.5" drives excluding the 160GB OS hardisk even though it's meant to officially fit 4 drives. You need to flash a modified BIOS and use a eSATA to SATA cable to re-use your external eSATA port though.

Where can I get this server with this price?

thanks for the information...now i have some question regarding NAS basic thing i guess..

first of all i wanted to ask...if lets say all my movies are stored in this NAS and connected to my router....if my samsung tv from my living room is connected to my router as well...will my tv be able to access those video from the NAS? and another question in this same topic...lets say if my tv can access them...will it be able to play all kinds of video files like rmvb etc? i believe that my samsung lcd does not support much codec for movie...is it those codec processing happens in the NAS itself?

as for the OS...i think it will be able to install windows 7? since it acts like a small pc?
*
I recylce my old pc to be my mini server and connected to my tv wirelessly. My tv which is not a smart tv can access the movies file in my server when I enable DLNA funtion in window 7. I don't know if a smart tv can detect shared folder or not but it will most probably can detect DLNA device like mine. As the processing, the video processing is done by the tv so although my mini server can play all kind of movie format, but the tv can't. Mostly when involving larger than 2Gb movie file. But it all the depend on the codec used.

Planning to get a decent NAS....any recommendation? Below RM500...

I had used before the Synology (2 Bay), both the normal and junior ones.... they are really good... but I don't have a budget for that....

My question is, what would be the "Most Value for Money NAS 2 Bay" under RM500....

I was considering the Buffalo Linkstation Duo Pro or the Dlink 320?
*
I also have the same question as yours. For budget NAS (specially this 2), which one is better in term of transfer speed and functionality?

I am using Buffalo Pro Duo for almost 2 years, bought at 400++.
Performance wise is ok, transfer rate at 30Mb++ with Gigabit switch.
Can support Apple device and can remote access from internet.

My bro bought Dlink 320 on last year ~ 300. (Can get less than 300 on PCFair)
He regret of getting it, performance is slower than Buffalo.
User Interface is very simple but not much feature compare to Buffalo.
And worse is he notice Dlink 320 doesn't support his 3TB HDD.

For me, I am happy with my Buffalo Pro Duo.
The decision is up to you.

Thank you for your view. I'm looking for this both model. Your post really make my decision easier.
