Joining the club
Have 2 Nas (kind of). First one is a Western Digital World II 2x 1TB done in RAID1 configuration. Used for my media files
The second one is my old PC which I dual boot either in Linux or Windows. 4x 1TB HDD, used to torrent (using Web UI) + store my important files.

Currently looking for a UPS for the PC Nas.

@thumbwrap: using the same nas but i am getting around 9~10mb/s transfer rate. and that is through a router and a hub. and wifi is around 3mb/s as well.

Actually I get about that speed too if I'm transferring a single file to a near-empty directory.

However if I transfer 100 files into a directory that already has 1,000 files in it, the transfer speed goes down to ~250kbps or worse.

To break that traffic jam, I'm still deciding if its better to replace Unifi's non-gigabit DIR-615 router with a gigabit one or get a NAS like qnap or synology. Would appreciate any opinions.

I was transferring around 50GB of MP3s into the NAS at the time, thus it seems that I don't have this problem. but then again I am not using the default TM Unifi router, as I changed to an Asus RT13U router which might explain the difference

Here is a tip if you are using unifi router and a NAS. Sometimes the router will have some problem with packets from the NAS and as a result, transfer would be slow, movie playback lags, and worse, some files could be deemed corrupted after copying to your PC. What I do is get a normal hub (a gigabit hub would be better tho) and connect your NAS and PC direct to the HUB so that it would only use the router to get the IP from DHCP. All the other connections would be then direct from your NAS to the PC without having the router involved.

Yes. I am using Asus RT13U and having problem with .exe files being corrupted when I copied from the NAS to my PC. At first I thought the download was borked but when I checked on my download rig which connects directly to the NAS, the file is okay. thus I changed the connection and voila! Sroblem polved

A hijack of your post, I read on the difference between a hub, switch and router here. but why put a router between the switch and modem for? sorry if noob questions
*
For Unifi there is currently no modem/router combo yet. Thus you needvthe router to dial up you connection. the route will also act as a dhcp server, grantjng the pc ip addresses

I understood that part, but most routers are multiport anyway right? so why the extra switch?
*
Read my post above. There are some packet problem with the NAS when I was using direct connection to the router thus why I used a hub instead. The packet now won't have to go through the router and for some people like me it fixed the problem. Also my hub is a gigabit lan hub thus it's faster compared to the 10/100mb/s connection on the router

HOLY ---!!!
My NAS died after my cat decided that my desk looks a good place to play and rammed it off the table. Plugged it back in and it kept looping. Now have to use Ubuntu to mount the raids and backup my files in there before I get another NAS casing =__=

hub?? should be switch right?? Hub is slower with bigger collision..
*
Yep, switch. Sorry

Anyways if any of you have a problem with your NAS and you need to access the data inside it but can't since it's configured in RAID, here is a solution

1 - Usually NAS will use unix's EXT3 filesystem thus it can't be opened with windows. For this you need a live edition (on a CD or a USB Stick) of Ubuntu
2 - Run Terminal.
3 - Run the command sudo modprobe md_mod
4 - sudo mknod /dev/md4 b 9 4
5 - sudo apt-get install mdadm. Note this will take a while
6 - Using a GUI storage manager, locate your NAS's HDD. Usually it will be mounted as sdb, but in some cases where the PC has a lot of disk it could be anything from sdc to sdz
user posted image
7 - sudo mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sdx where x detonates the alphabet of your mounted disk
8 - You will now see your disk appearing on the GNOME explorer. Double click on it to mount
9 - ??????
10 - PROFIT!!!

Wonder if I can ask it here. Apparently, from what I have seen on the internet, Windows Home Server doesn't read a 3TB harddisk as 3TB but split it into 2TB and 1TB instead. What does this actually mean?
Let's try an example,
If I were to configure RAID0 of 2 2TB hard disks, how will it appear in WHS? hmm.gif
*
2 seperate 2 GBs?

Edit: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/top...b-and-whs-2011/

according to this you need to have a uefi bios, set cinnection as AHCI and format the disc as GPT and not MBR

So, it means we can fully use the 3TB right? Wonder if Acer Revocenter supports 3TB drives though. It's so expensive now. About 600 for 3TB WD Green. shocking.gif

I know what you mean. i just bought a 2TB HDD for my PC NAS last night for RM400 D:

yes, the +1 OS drive and hot-swap capability is cool on the Revocenter..  I hope it is easier to find this RevoCenter than this N40L!!  Do you know if Revo is available in lowyat or digitalmall?  The only reservation i have on these 'true' servers is their power consumption, compares to those NAS ie. buffalo quad, especially when i intend to turn them on 24x7...
*
Unless they are under really heavy load I don't think it will differ much. For my rig even with everything running the cpu kept it's throttled down state unless i do something intensive.

but due to malaysia slow upload speed, getting large file from home NAS when outside is quite a pain right?

I am using Unifi 10MB at home and I can download the files from my NAS when I am at the office at speed around 1~2MB/s which is quite acceptable

just a correction...Unifi is providing 10Mbits, not in MB...so the torrents should run around the speed of 1MB/s that shud be correct i think..
*

Yeah, shifted the B as well. but I am not talking about torrent. i was saying I can copy files from my house to my office PC

that fast?
theoritically it should be 10Mb/8 = 1.25MBps Maximum
however TM only provide 80% efficiency throughput, so maybe it is just 1MBps?
what software did u use to download and measure?
becoz i am currently in korea now with average speedtest.net result of 60dl/40ul
however when i FTP back my home PC to get files
if i use firefox normal dl i just get around 2MBps
if i use xunlei i can get around 10MBps (probably wrong value)
edit: now i know why xunlei can get 10MBps, becoz it create 5 simultaenously connection to my FTP at home, each 1 dling at different parts
i vpn back home and transfer the share file, also around 2MBps only
*

As I said in the post above, it's a typo
