Has anyone used the Black Armour ? With buy 1 free 1 offer, it looks like a good buy now for those who r considering a home used 4 bay NAS..

Link is from lyn.. http://blackarmor.com.my/promo/?gclid=CPmx...CFY4a6wod-FMAfw

i'm gonna receive one (free another one) tomorrow. if speed/testing is OK then i'm gonna get another one biggrin.gif hooking it up with 4x3 TB Red WD. it doesn't support ZFS though, which sucks.

was planning to get a synology one, but it's just too damn expensive.

also.......... CIFS or NFS guys?

and with link aggregration, speed is even lower WTF

Hi Bro, what managed switch are you using for link aggregation?

I am just spit balling here but did you check if there is anything to do with 4k compatibility?
*
My setup is basically all using gigabit cables. Raid 10.

BlackArmor NAS 400 [+ 4x3TB WD Red] -> 2 LAN cable -> ASUS N66U Router -> UniFi Router

And copying files to the NAS is like

Win7 -> HomePlug 500mb (1/2 gigabit?) or WiFi N 5G, full bar -> ASUS N66U -> BlackPondan 400

using CIFS/Samba, drag+drop: highest is 2MB/s with HomePlug. With 5G WiFi it's 1.2MB/s
using FTP: 1.5MB/s x 3/4 concurrent file transfers, but ONLY after I disable user accounts and access rights (as in, enable public share only). Currently using this way.

There is no setting for jumbo frames, or any other optimisation/customisation in the BlackPondan 400 page. So I have no idea if it uses 4k or whatever.

seriously this thing is a piece of crap. very, very underpowered. Checking BlackArmor support page is just full of complaints of similar crappy performances by other users. Only BlackArmor 440 model (with seagate's own harddisk, but not available in Malaysia) is generally (almost) reliable.

There is a custom linux firmware that someone developed for this thing that supposedly (drastically!) will improve the performance. I'm gonna try it on the free unit. quick question, if I move the 4 harddisks to this other unit, will the raid be rebuilt or it will detect straight?

but whatever it is, if you guys have any other tip (other than carrying my 30KG super PC downstairs to connect to the router straight tongue.gif ) I'm all ears. If I can get 20MB/s transfer also I'm happy! Right now the general understanding/consensus to improve the performance in BlackArmor forum is to do these things:
1. disable access rights
2. transfer using FTP
3. install the linux firmware

The Aztech 500mbps only able to transfer 100mbps. I tested before. Using same power strip. UDP packet. Dunno why never goes over 100mbps. Direct link between system got almost 800.

F ME doh.gif

still, 100 mbps would still yield higher than 2MB/s transfer rate, no?

Man that is some bad rates you are getting. Even with my Wireless-G Wifi I am gettin 2.5MB/s, connected to cable is 11-12MB/s (nearly full 100Mbps rates).
What are the other users quoting their transfer speed as? Same?
You can try using a temporary computer to share a folder across the network 1st to see if it is the problem or not, otherwise i think you just have to accept that it is the Blackarmor problem already.

BTW, divide all megabit values to get megabyte... i.e. 100Mb/s = 12.5MB/s. Gives you the theoretical max transfer speed.
*
The highest that people are getting is with BlackArmor 440 (400 + seagate harddisks):
5MB/s over CIFS
15MB/s over NFS
25MB/s over FTP

that is with perfect gigabit networking, public shares only.

This thing is a total overpriced ripoff. Not to mention that this device has been around since 2009!!!! They're marketing it as a new product in Malaysia doh.gif

I really feel like making a video and run over this piece of crap and send it to them vmad.gif

1000 bucks wasted. I could've just buy a pc from lowyat and get better hardware than this doh.gif

Dang... i really should try out NFS for Linux-to-Linux transfers.

Anyway there really isnt much you can do until you rule out that it is really the Blackarmor and not your network. As of now it seems to me you are running WiFi between floors which can severely degrade signals... same principle could very well apply to the powerline.

Why not just set up the Blackarmor and a simple gigabit router connected via cable next to your com to just double confirm? if the previous method i mentioned is not possible? 1000BASE-T standard is really simple and straight forward, assuming your hardware are compliant, installation just calls for things like non looping cabling, CAT 5e cables, etc etc
*
i'm gonna do that soon just to be sure, but if i can put a number to it, i'm 90% sure it's the BlackPondan problem.

data transfer from my win7 pc > homeplug or WiFi N > N66U router > HomePlug or WiFi G or N > other pcs and macs and Raspberry Pis in the house yield a much, much better performance. 10, 20MB/s, or more.

And the thing that makes me (virtually) so sure is this:

plug in external USB3 hdd to the BlackPondan straight and copy 400+ GB files to the NAS, estimated time completion:

1 week.

no fking joke. but what makes it a joke is that they call copying from usb as backup. no other way (or function) that says COPY TO NAS. how the f can you back up then if speed is like floppy disk?!

Looks like the 4 x 3TB WD Red drives in the BlackArmor seems like a waste. Just get the N40L and transfer the WD Red drives and enjoy super fast transfers.
Yeah, I wish I can replace the Maxis router too but then again, I don't rely much on WiFi. For phone and Ipad access, it's ok.

I REALLY wanted to get the microserver. but I heard it got discontinued? that's why I got this thing - one for home, one for office. ugh

If you really want, you have to be fast. Yest evening, I was at lowyat to grab one of the Microserver and they told me there are about 2 - 3 units left.

Again... it was yesterday evening...

How do I check the read/write speed to the NAS?

just copy and check lah, that would be the easiest.

Hello sifus. Due to space constraints I'm planning to upgrade to a 4-bay NAS. Can I have some recommendations? Thanks
*
I can recommend NOT BUYING seagate blackarmor, but you prolly have read that already tongue.gif

well I finally got around to taking the damn thing upstairs and connect it straight to my pc's gigabit ethernet. so current setup is

Win 7 > 3Com 4 port gigabit > BlackPondan 400, all gigabit.

here's the transfer speed using filezilla.

user posted image
actually concurrent 10 file transfers later on resulted in all 10 of them getting slightly higher than 2MB/s each doh.gif

Sucks man this NAS. Better sell it away.

Any fw to upgrade?
*
well there is an unofficial linux fw that someone made, which supposedly, judging by the user reports, will make the transfer rate much higher. officially the last few updates have been seagate enhancing shit stuff, like enabling streaming using tappin.com app on your mobile. like wtf who cares if speed is too slow?!

anyway i really want to try the unofficial firmware. seems easy enough to flash. but i don't want to try and then have to rebuild my 12tb RAID 10 all over again rclxub.gif

Really sucks. I think speed for USB hd connected to Asus router using USB much higher.
*
i think transferring harddisk using someone in a wheelchair from kl to kelang is faster than this doh.gif RM1k++ gone just like that. don't really mind the money, but damn fak really bad experience with my first ever NAS vmad.gif

so look into your homeplug if it is still slow. I think as the few people here have indicated, homeplugs are slowwww.
*
but it shouldn't be, no? mine's rated 500mbps, so at the very least it should be getting half of gigabit speed (50MB/s at least). the wireless homeplug is 200mbps, so should have ample leeway with WiFi N connecting to it as well.
