His is N36 I think, not the latest N40. I will check with my office server provider see if N40 is available in Malaysia. I seem to be inclined towards Acer Revocenter because it's cheap about RM1.1K with a 1TB drive and a 250GB(for OS) and hot-swap drives. Will get it later on when hard disk price drop so I can get everything together. I will just do with my external drives at the moment. It's seriously not worth purchasing hard disk now unless it's essential. doh.gif
N40 should be more expensive. hmm.gif

yes, the +1 OS drive and hot-swap capability is cool on the Revocenter.. I hope it is easier to find this RevoCenter than this N40L!! Do you know if Revo is available in lowyat or digitalmall? The only reservation i have on these 'true' servers is their power consumption, compares to those NAS ie. buffalo quad, especially when i intend to turn them on 24x7...

Unless they are under really heavy load I don't think it will differ much. For my rig even with everything running the cpu kept it's throttled down state unless i do something intensive.

since there is no some "introduction" about NAS in the first post
may I ask, what is the real benefits of a NAS?
becoz i think any PC can be a cheaper/better NAS right? while it is already readily available
why should we waste extra money for a dedicated NAS?
Some 1 pls enlighten me

edit: is it the only way to access home NAS from outside = FTP?
what about CIFS/SMB, routable thru WAN?
webDAV possible?

but due to malaysia slow upload speed, getting large file from home NAS when outside is quite a pain right?

1.. "directly" from internet the best method is FTP or via http

2. cifs/smb is possible but for it to work u must be on "the same lan" , best method is to use VPN/pptp/l2tp to tunnel back to your home network/office network, nt sure abt webdev

3. if your talking about home user yes its a real B*** , but on unifi its alright/acceptable

The key benefit for me is power consumption, low dB, less maintenance, and storage management..

My reasons to buy a NAS: First, I use a diskless MacBook Air with 128GB SSD. Not enough for me as a mobile photographer/videographer. Portable hard disks do crash (I already lost 2 that got banged around in the field) and I already have too much gear to carry so a private cloud was an ideal solution.

Second, I have to routinely access my stuff from different systems. Windows, Linux, MacOS, IOS and Android. Again, a NAS is an ideal solution for it.

By the way I've managed to solve the speed problem of accessing my home NAS. I just swapped Unifi's standard D-Link router for a gigabyte router, the TP-Link WR1043-ND. Now I can transfer a 16GB file in 30 minutes when previously it would take about 20 hours, possibly more. It was the network after all.

I am using Unifi 10MB at home and I can download the files from my NAS when I am at the office at speed around 1~2MB/s which is quite acceptable

Yes, unfortunately. I'm quite blur about tech stuff so I had to learn by trial and error, both frustrating and expensive. Luckily I managed to sell my WD to a friend. Am pretty happy with my Synology so far. smile.gif

just a correction...Unifi is providing 10Mbits, not in MB...so the torrents should run around the speed of 1MB/s that shud be correct i think..

thx for the reply, we can always use FTP + dyndns to reach our home pc right
then we can get our files
then why should we get a NAS?
if in LAN we can always use windows sharing or homegroup wat

u access ur stuff in LAN only right? i personally think accessing NAS thru WAN is more important, as we can get our files when we are outside
dropbox/box/sugarsync etc is very slow
if in LAN, carrying a external usb3.0 hdd is not hard right? just a few steps away
and can use windows file sharing or homegroup right?

that fast?
theoritically it should be 10Mb/8 = 1.25MBps Maximum
however TM only provide 80% efficiency throughput, so maybe it is just 1MBps?
what software did u use to download and measure?
becoz i am currently in korea now with average speedtest.net result of 60dl/40ul
however when i FTP back my home PC to get files
if i use firefox normal dl i just get around 2MBps
if i use xunlei i can get around 10MBps (probably wrong value)
edit: now i know why xunlei can get 10MBps, becoz it create 5 simultaenously connection to my FTP at home, each 1 dling at different parts
i vpn back home and transfer the share file, also around 2MBps only

Yeah at the moment, its only for LAN access until I figure out how to get WAN up with a level of security I'm comfortable with.

And yeah that's what I was doing before this - keeping a stack of USB disks until I lost track of which file was in which disk. I have more than 4TB of multimedia for my work and its growing at 20% a month so until they invent a portable 10TB USB disk, a multi-bay NAS is my only option.
