hi all,
back to the HP N40L... I wonder if we can use up all the 4+1 optical slots to host 5 storage HDDs and leave the OS runs on a ie. SSD? Can the SSD connects to either the PCi or Sata port with ease? Or, worst still, can an opensource OS ie. Freenas runs on a USB drive since N40L has about 4-5 USB ports altogether... |

QUOTE(numbertwo @ Feb 2 2012, 11:47 PM) hi all, Yes you can. I have replaced my optical slot with a sata hdd. So my 4 slots are free to run RAID drives. BTW, it's only storage server. Using SSD is overkill. You still have network bandwidth capped at 1gbit. This is slower than a standard WD green drives.back to the HP N40L... QUOTE(rizvanrp @ Jan 23 2012, 03:01 PM) I just finished building my Linux based home NAS yesterday, here's the performance from my desktop SSD to NAS (Ubuntu Server 11.10 64 bit + SAMBA + Cat5 + no jumbo frames) : Not bad. I'm getting around 110 to 120MB/s transfers to and from the HP Microserver. Not bad since it's very compact and the cost without drives is RM 900++ at that time.» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « H/W is : CPU : AMD Sempron 145 MOBO : ASUS M5A78L-M LX RAM : 1x 4GB Kingston DDR3 CASE : Fractal Design Core 3000 PSU : Xigmatek 500W Total cost without drives was about RM790 and it has 6 inbuilt 3.5' HDD trays + 2x trays converted from the 5.25' bays at the top. This is running at 1Gbps, if you're running at 100Mbps your xfer rates would be about 10-11MB/s. So far I'm very satisfied with the price to performance ratio QUOTE(JinXXX @ Feb 3 2012, 10:25 AM) yes its possible to forgo the dvdrom and install another hdd.. Yes, I forgo the DVDROM and put the stock 160GB boot drive up there because any OS installation is via USB thumbdrive. QUOTE(JinXXX @ Feb 3 2012, 10:25 AM) its also possible to use an external 4 bay usb enclosure and link up Yes, also did this to expand current space. So now it is 8TB inside the Microserver and 8TB installed in the external box. All Samsung F4EG drives. Thinking of getting some more but the prices of hardisk is prohibitive at the moment.QUOTE(abubin @ Feb 3 2012, 10:45 AM) Yes you can. I have replaced my optical slot with a sata hdd. You sure Gigabit connection is slower than WD Green drives? You mean those drives can sustain 110 to 120MB/s?QUOTE(JinXXX @ Feb 3 2012, 11:24 AM) if not use the esata interface it does have esata with PM (port multiplier function) right ? The old N36L's eSATA was not PM aware. No idea on the new N40L. So I had to rely on the Silicon Image eSATA card that was bundled with the external RAID box enclosure. Just make sure the card comes with a low profile bracket because it is needed if you want to install in the Microserver. It also adds a few more seconds to bootup sequence.QUOTE(JinXXX @ Feb 3 2012, 11:24 AM) else u can get a esata card with PM and link it to probox( a brand of ext enc 4 bay) Yup. I don't know about others but I find that if I have .rar files in the external box and I extract the .rar file to the same location (external box), the drives in the external box will hang and get disconnected to the Microserver. It reboots itself after that and gets connected again. No problem if I do normal file transfers. I guess this is the limitation of the cheap Silicon Image eSATA card.To solve this problem, I extract .rar files from the external box to the drives in the Microserver or if the .rar files are in the Microserver, I extract the files to the external box. |

No idea on the firmware. Perhaps I will check it out. The eSATA card is 6GBps capable.
Drives configured in RAID 0. |

QUOTE(hengguowei @ Feb 1 2012, 05:32 PM) His is N36 I think, not the latest N40. I will check with my office server provider see if N40 is available in Malaysia. I seem to be inclined towards Acer Revocenter because it's cheap about RM1.1K with a 1TB drive and a 250GB(for OS) and hot-swap drives. Will get it later on when hard disk price drop so I can get everything together. I will just do with my external drives at the moment. It's seriously not worth purchasing hard disk now unless it's essential. Hi, do you mind check with ur server reseller on that N40L? No luck with the HP reseller in digital mall as they don't have it.. I just wanna know the price so that can do a comparo with RC-111.N40 should be more expensive. They carry some stocks the last time i went there ( couple months ago). hi, do you mind checking with ur supplier too to see if they have stock for this rare N40L?**CUt** I can ask my office HP supplier to check if they have this stock. How many units u guys expect to buy? This post has been edited by numbertwo: Feb 3 2012, 02:29 PM |

QUOTE(numbertwo @ Feb 1 2012, 05:43 PM) yes, the +1 OS drive and hot-swap capability is cool on the Revocenter.. I hope it is easier to find this RevoCenter than this N40L!! Do you know if Revo is available in lowyat or digitalmall? The only reservation i have on these 'true' servers is their power consumption, compares to those NAS ie. buffalo quad, especially when i intend to turn them on 24x7... I tried asking Acer in Lowyat but they don't have Revocenter. Forgot to ask about N40L from my HP supplier. |

aiyak... now you guys want to do group buy. I was searching high and low for the N40L Proliant last month but I can honestly say it is hell of a difficult to find in Msia. Even HP themselves (Msia branch) not interested to sell ( I have the email to prove it). I have a couple of dealer quotes with me but they cost between RM1300 to RM1500+ for the same model mind you. Otherwise there is still the HP store in 1Utama which is selling the N36L model for RM999 or something to that extend.
Long story short I am having my friend buy it for me from UK and shipping it here. fingers crossed I should only need to pay like 2 thirds or less than the price in KL shipped from UK. FYI I am doing a writeup on this server project which I am embarking on. You can find my first post on it here travelscrolls.zenfolio.com/blog. currently only one article, but I will add more as I advance through the project. feel free to give any comments on my article as I am no expert and still learning. Added on February 4, 2012, 1:25 pm QUOTE(881118 @ Feb 2 2012, 02:37 AM) since there is no some "introduction" about NAS in the first post for me it is a couple of areas, storage space and file sharing across all my devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones) are the main funcitons. Other minor functions (torrent, security footage recording, PVR), HTPC are also intended (although that will fall as a NAS/HTPC setup already technically). Of course if I had only one desktop based PC I could put a lot of HDDs and not bother to have a NAS - that is one. But if I intend to carry out the minor functions i mentioned above I need my desktop to run 24/7 which is not very cost effective (electricity costs and hardware wear and tear)may I ask, what is the real benefits of a NAS? becoz i think any PC can be a cheaper/better NAS right? while it is already readily available why should we waste extra money for a dedicated NAS? Some 1 pls enlighten me edit: is it the only way to access home NAS from outside = FTP? what about CIFS/SMB, routable thru WAN? webDAV possible? but due to malaysia slow upload speed, getting large file from home NAS when outside is quite a pain right? It was 250GBP shipped to a UK address, but then there is a 100GBP cash back rebate plus since I am shipping it out of UK I will try to claim back on the VAT which is 17.5% or 43GBP. Shipping to Msia is going to be between 30-70 GBP. So I am expecting it to be around <RM900 shipped here.
Even if it was RM1000+ I would still be fine with it since it is near impossible to find one here (ready stock). I would still save sufficiently to get a HDD or two |
