I think brands does not matter much(some exceptions). The most important is after sales service - parts replacement, turn around time etc.
Basically front loading machine tends to be a little gentler on the clothing. However it takes a long time to wash the clothes. The load capacity a not too high. After the machine stops, you have to wait a minute or 2 before you can open the door.
Top loaders takes less time to do a wash cycle, can accommodate more clothes, and you can open the door as soon the machine stops spinning.
Don't get those with build in dryer. They get spoiled very fast.
If you can spend more, get those with metal casing(Maytags). They last almost forever.
