Yup, dryers consume a lot of electricity. They are high wattage machines and each drying cycle may take 20-30 mins or more.
Dryers are popular in the West due to cold seasons when you cannot dry outside. Here in Malaysia with so much sunshine I don't see the need for a dryer, unless maybe you live in a condo (but even in condo you can air dry in the yard).
