i think its hardware issue? If its not, then try uninstall the last app that you install before this happen..
Worst case scenario just do a full restore..

Maybe it's hardware but maybe not, follow what Fighteden state and if the problem still occurs, try a hard reset. Restore will be your last resort if anything above fails.

try to hold the sleep button (top right corner) and the home button (the biggest key) together until the apple logo pops up.

its called a proximity sensor. the 3g iphone has 2 (members, kindly reconfirm this)

anyway it sounds like you might be having a hardware problem; a very sticky and dodgy situation. all illegal unlocked iphone users' worst nightmare!

are you currently using a screen protector? my guess is it might be confusing the sensor. hence if you are desperate, you might wanna try removing it and see (even though this is unlikely)

to reconfirm that this purely a hardware malfunction, (as suggested) the only way is to restore your iphone and make sure that you create as new phone and avoid using the itunes backup file.

sorry to hear about your misfortune and good luck!

im not in a mood to type length instructions for you but if you can visit www.iclarified.com, they have prepared a detailed guide for you.

hint: avoid ziphone. try using +iliberty whenever feasible.

LOL, I was reading down this thread thinking it'd be a new hardware issue to start looking around for and discussing. I most DEFINITELY didn't expect the root of the problem to be a simple pouch of all things.... rclxub.gif rclxub.gif doh.gif doh.gif

I doubt it was a flip pouch. Must've been the cheaper silicone types which overlapped the proximity sensor. Bad cutting, I suppose.

haha...I have guess it is iPhone case related issue at the start of this thread smile.gif
So everyone must becareful of the accessories that they are going to purchase, make sure it don't block the sensor, buttons, mic, speaker and etc. biggrin.gif

Usually when these sort of incidents occur, it's often due to the hastiness of the end user when spotting an accessory with rebates. Like psyeo has said, don't jump the gun and start shopping for accessories just for the sake of doing it. Start by looking up decent brands which make decent accessories for Apple's products, read up on reviews for a particular product you may be interested in, post up your interests here and check to see whether anyone has had experiences with it, and last but not least, inspect and test the actual item before making the purchase. In the TS current scenario, money has been wasted....
