if reset doesn't work, try restore to 1.1.4 firmware. if the problem persists, then welcome to the non-functioning-upper-screen club.
some still got prob eventhough they've restored the firmware. if that's the case, it's hardware problem. some of the 1st gen iPhones are prone to this issue (dunno the new 3G ones exhibit the same problem). myb the digitiser got the problem. no matter which part of the screen if affected, u need to change the whle screen as it comes in one package replacement.
the cost? depends. DIY starting around RM600 and above (some online shops got no stock). repair in shop (with replacement part u dunno is the official replacement kit or not) will cost RM800-RM1k. but remember though, changing the screen of the iPhone is the most difficult compared to changing other parts (as u can easily damage another thing).
so, first u try to restore to firmware to 1.1.4. if the problem persists it's up to u whether u wanna grab some replacement part from faulty iPhones u can on garage sales, or maybe find new replacement parts from DIY online store (u can search through this iPhone subforum for some site), or u can ask someone to repair it (shop, etc etc). u can check with bro sonnettech if he can repair it.
or u can sell it as a faulty unit on garage sale. i already bought one that got the same prob (scavenging some needed parts on it, the others left for experiment or just backup) for RM500 in Garage Sales.
do restore first, myb luck is on your side.
