The nostalgic Force is strong with this one.
Yes, it's the 7th instalment of the Star Wars franchise. The true sequel that die hard Star Wars fans have been waiting for since 1983.
Watching the iconic Star Wars opening (A long time ago in a galaxy far far away... --> Star Wars Theme --> The Crawl --> Movie begins) for the first time in cinema is indeed a memorable experience.
The Force Awakens returns to the root of Star Wars, the story of a commoner being called to an adventure and the story of good triumphs over evil. It's a tried and tested formula. No doubt, Star Wars fans, the fans of the original trilogy and those who experience the original trilogy from the 1970s to 1980s will love The Force Awakens. But by returning to the same formula, many will say this movie lacks originality.

The story, narrative and the elements are similar to the A New Hope.
- A common people embarks on an adventure.
- The hero who doesn't realize he/she is strong with the Force.
- The action-packed opening.
- A droid is tasked with delivering an important piece of information to the Rebel Alliance.
- A bar with weird characters, aliens playing music.
- A major character get killed off.
- The evil power has a super weapon, albeit with a fatal weakness.
- The climatic attack on the super weapon.
Compare with the prequel trilogy, the storytelling and the flow of this movie is definitely better. It contains more laughter than any other Star Wars movie. In short, this is a fun movie. I think it's the little things that matter, they pack a lot of homages to A New Hope that certainly evokes a smile from the peoples who get it.

Rey ridiculed a ship as a piece of junk. Seconds later it turns out that piece of junk is the legendary Millennium Falcon. In A New Hope, Luke did say the Falcon was a piece of junk when he first saw it.
That's why this movie is best view if you're familiar with the original trilogy before. That nostalgic feel when you see those iconic characters return to the big screen is priceless.
Now the part that really trouble me:

Kylo Ren is introduced as a powerful Sith Lord, capable for suspending a shot from the blaster. Then he becomes a confused punk in the middle of the movie and love to throw a tantrum. He should never remove that mask, that destroy his mystique. However the actor that plays Kylo Ren indeed look like the young Harrison Ford in A New Hope. I understand the need of having him murder Han Solo, it establishes him a villain than a sympathetic character.
Then in the climax, he's not as powerful as he presented. As a trained Sith, he can't defeat an uninitiated easily. Rey who just discovered the Force, use it better than Kylo Ren and almost kill him in the lightsaber duel. Then it is revealed that his training is not complete yet. What a let down.
Speaking of lightsaber duel, they can choreograph the fight better.
I don't expect Luke Skywalker to have about two minutes of screen time, and we have to wait till the end to finally see his face. Well, Luke will certainly become a Yoda or Obi-Wan type mentor character in the sequel. And the ending shot, I'm expecting something better than what we saw. At least having Luke retrieves his lightsaber from Rey and activating it in a still shot.
Please put Lando Calrissian in the sequel! Finn is Lando's son? Rey was trained by Luke before but somehow she doesn't remember that. Rey and Kylo Ren are siblings? Hey we doesn't know her last name, 'Rey' can be either her first or last name. Just my guess for the sequel
The film makers cannot rely on nostalgia alone. For the sequel, they have to come out with something original, something new.
The score: 7.5/10 from me, the feel of seeing the return of the characters we knew contributes a lot.
If you want to have a better experience, watch the original trilogy first before watching The Force Awakens.
