Bizarrely, my connection (60.50.x.x, 4mbps package) has become really fast today. For the first time it is actually what I paid for.

I am seeing single-connection HTTP downloads at over 500KB/s, and I have reliable 230ms pings to USA.

Wonder how long that will last?

can you give me the link and which IP you got 230ms ?
*
When I posted that, I was downloading VirtualBox (virtual machine system) from Sun. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

The IP was one of my clients' machines in San Francisco. Ping is back to 300ms now. I'll try again early tomorrow morning to see if it's just a time-of-day thing.

Sure enough, this time of morning (5:30am) I am getting 230ms pings again.

I also notice that traceroutes to the west coast USA during this time go through as6453.net (Tata) which I don't think they do during peak hours.

Tmnet will be fined by consumer tribunals if it were to operate at US or Europe/Japan.

TM would be out of business in those countries, because there is competition in wired broadband. Everyone would have switched to some other ISP.

There's a good chance you are using bad cable or splitter in your house.

Try removing all filters and splitters and telephones, and connect the modem directly to the jack closest to where the phone line enters your house. Also try this with one or two different phone cables.

If you still get these low sync speeds then the problem could be with wiring outside your home. But most of the time it is inside the home. The problem in Malaysia is that the phone cables and accessories sold are of such low quality that many people suffer low speeds needlessly.

I've just experienced the most remarkable thing downloading a Logitech keyboard driver:

First time I think I've ever gotten max speed in a real world situation (as opposed to a speedtest) from TM.

Lately, when I checked my modem status, my DOWNSTREAM is varying each time I restart my modem. It can goes to max 1.5mbps and lowest to 800+ kbps. It used to be a static 1.5mbps.
*
Your options:

Bad splitter
Bad wire in your house
Bad wire from your house to TM
Bad port
Bad modem

Start by testing the ones that you easily can - replace or omit splitter, use different cable from jack to modem, borrow friend's modem. If any of those fixes your problem, you know what it was. Otherwise you have to call TM.

Yes, TM has once again lost most of the internet. No local peering, cannot reach anything via AIMS, Jaring (eg LYN), etc.

The exact same thing happened a few days ago and lasted for about 3 hours.

Edit: typo

It's better but still not fixed. Connections to local ISPs that are supposed to peer at AIMS are going via international links (e.g., via Singapore).

How many staff does that web site require? Updating the content on the site should take a few minutes a day at most.

Do you know that in Europe and Australia the people there do not like to live in the cities?

I didn't know that. I know that Australia is one of the most urbanised countries on earth. And that in Europe the elite live in the inner cities, unlike Malaysia where they live in the suburbs.

QUOTE(strawberrypear @ Feb 17 2009, 08:39 PM)
Not true. Take London for instance. It's highly populated because mainly the people there are the immigrants like from Eastern Europe, India and Pakistan. The real British people often prefer to live in the suburbs.

The ones who can't afford to live in the cities, live in the suburbs. There are a lot of poor people in London, but there are also more rich people than everywhere else in England put together.

QUOTE
You sure the elites live in inner cities? I don't think so. Those mansions with big estates there are located far from the cities. They in general do not like noisy crowds and places packed with people.

Those mansions are tiny in number and statistically irrelevant.

They are indeed relevant if you're referring to elites.

You sound that you do not know much about Europe. I understand that you're an expatriate in Malaysia from your previous post.

Which country's national are you? Are you an Indian national currently living in Malaysia, Rajul?

Nope, not Indian. I'll give you a clue: If you ever do find out my nationality you will feel silly for telling me that I do not know much about Europe.

QUOTE
Europeans especially the well to do ones dislike living in congested/crowded areas unlike the chinese and indians who are already so used to such environments.

Take them to Kopitiams in Malaysia and they'll complain that it's too noisy to dine in them.

Some will. But what passes for a crowd in Asia is more intense than what passes for a crowd in Europe.

Yes, Streamyx seems unusable since last night unless you have VPN.

Huge dropouts all the time. I am getting over 90% packet loss to some locations.

The last few times this happened, it was over in a couple hours. This time it has gone on for a very long time (at least 8 hours).

I think we should set up a web site that records these outages, and then invite everyone we know who has Streamyx to join, and the web site can auto-generate refund request letters on behalf of all of its members for the periods when the service is unusable. Maybe if they are getting thousands of refund requests every week, management will start to pay attention to the fact that the network people are not doing their jobs.
