I just want to share with you all how to make free phone calls to any land lines in Malaysia and a few other countries like US, United Kingdom and Australia from your Iphone.

First, make sure you are using WIFI (unless you have unlimited data package from Maxis, Digi or Celcom). Then you have to sign up to a VOIP provider, www.voipstunt.com. Download their program and click new user. Go through the sign up process and now once you have a new account, close the program.

On your Iphone, you need to download fring. It's a free software that allows you to chat with your MSN, Yahoo, Skype, Google Talk friends. Another special feature of Fring is that you can do voice chat or make calls out with your Skype account or a SIP account (in this case, we're using voipstunt.com). Okay, now once you have Fring on your phone, start the program and click on community. Go ahead and sign in with your messengers account like MSN, Yahoo and Skype. In communities, you would see SIP. Click on it. Use your voipstunt login and password. For the proxy server type sip.voipstunt.com

Okay, once that is done, use the dialer. Dial the land line but make sure you type +60 first before the number, (for example +60377226233). After that, you can see two green call out buttons at the bottom, SIP or Skype. Click on the SIP button. It takes a while to dial but it does connect. The clarity of the line depends on the WIFI you are using.

According to the VOIP website, as a free trial user (those who just sign up without buying credits) get free 60 minutes calls to countries which have free land line calls marked in their website. Theoretically, you can keep signing in a new account after your first 60 minutes end (to keep getting more free minutes). They log your IP address though, so make sure if you are calling from your home Wifi, logout and login again into your home broadband.


There are a few other SIP providers out there, so surf around and let us know if you spot one with a better deal.

This trick also works for other phone which allows SIP calls. I tried it with a Nokia E51 phone, it works. You can also download Fring to a variety of other phones. Check out the Fring website to see which phone it works on. I think it's basically any phone that has WIFI access.

I called a friend in Canada with the Iphone using my Skype account on my Iphone. We chatted for over 30 minutes. The line was clear most of the time. So it was fun and almost free (wifi at home have to pay!).
