hmm without sim card, it will just be an ipod.
if u're talking about special unlocking sim card or some sort, then no need:)

I wonder if String collected his iphone already or not, forget to tell him to bring his laptop, so that he can activate his iphone at the airport  smile.gif

I do not know, as I have not tried this.

I unlocked mine using US iTunes, Psyeo uses his NZ iTunes, but the phones are from NZ. If you look at this logically, iTunes is just an instrument for unlocking, and it does not matter which region of iTunes is used during the activating.

To be safe, I suggest using iTunes regions that already have an iPhone launch, otherwise a red flag may trigger in Apple HQ about you activating it using a non-launch country and may result in complications later.

it shouldn't be unlocking but activating. i bought 2 8gb iphones at Telstra (aus) and they had to activate the phone afterwhich i called a number to unlock the phone. i had to use itunes to restore the iphone to ensure it is unlocked.

unlocked will be able to use with any telcos. NZ phones aren't locked in the first instance so there's no need to unlock.

Do you mean that you need to call them telco to unlocked it? Or if i buy from Aus, can i unlock it in Malaysia using my own iTunes account?
Appreciated if you can elaborate more on this. smile.gif

Australia iphones are locked to the telco which sells them.

Say if you buy from Optus, it will be locked to Optus. If you buy from Telstra, it will be locked to Telstra.

You will have to activate the iphone before it can be used. This is different from unlocking. Spring activated the iphone himself using iTunes. Some people do it at home but most of them had their phones activated at the store.

You have to request for the telco to unlock the phone and pay the unlocking fee. Different telco different prices. Then the telco will ask Apple to unlock the iphones by the imei. You got to check on your own using iTunes to see if the iphone is unlock. You have to do a restore in order to know that the phone has been unlocked. *this part you can ask the telco how to do it or you can google for the procedures*

If you are interested, I can set up a simple guide, but not now cos I'm flying off tonite.

and NO, you cannot unlock the iphone yourself yet.

@zijian,
You're going to haf to take the risk then.  And, U should tell ur friend:-
1) Go into Optus shop.  Ask for 16GB iPhone 3G.

no pre-paid stock at Optus Australia. Have to wait from 4 to 8 weeks for pre-paid stock to be in.

@cocklea,
Perhaps someone will come up with back covers for the iPhone 3G?! *grins*  That way, it can be customised according to mood ! tongue.gif
