Since the original Mortal Kombat was one of the first films I watched in a theater with surround sound, I hold a special place in my heart for this franchise. I was a big fan of the video games growing up, but, like everyone else, was extremely let down by the films -- most notably, the sequel: Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (or Mortal Kombat: You People Are Seriously F**king Up Some Really Cool Characters). A third Mortal Kombat flick has been hanging around development hell for awhile now, circling a group of writers (because it will take at least 50 scribes to make this one really suck), yet there's been very little movement on it.

^ as highlighted in red, the FIRST Mortal Kombat movie was NOT a let down (the 2nd one IS).
It was hailed as one of the most awesome video-game adaptation to movie ever made!
In fact, I think it is the ONLY one there is that was a huge success!

Instead of just focusing about the tournament, they should've put a strong plotline.... something epic, and not just fighting endlessly like no reason.

MK is one f**king awesome video game.

In my mind, ever since the first movie, there is only ONE original Liu Kang, ONE original Raiden, ONE original Johnny Cage, ONE original Sonya Blade and ONE original Kitana.
Any other actors/actresses replacing the originals = 80% I will not watch it.

like  how i used to think Tim Burton's Batman was the definitive Batman movie, till Nolan's rendition came along..

nah. i dun think they should tinker with the storyline anymore. in fact, the games didn't have that much of a storyline anyway (i'm refering to the first MK game).

more epic fights, more characters and more Kitana (drools)..

The bankruptcy judge overseeing the sale apparently wasn’t swayed by Threshold Entertainment’s argument that film producer Larry Kasanoff was the driving creative force in the franchise. (The Chicago Tribune quotes the judge as saying the objections, as well as those of Vin Diesel-owned development studio Tigon Games were ‘resolved’.

Based on Midway's popular 1992 video game, the franchise follows the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire planet. Uziel's Shimmer Lake made the 2009 black list, which features the best unproduced screenplays around Hollywood. Johnny Cage was modeled after Jean-Claude Van Damme. No word on the progress of the remake, but we'd like to see a hard "R" version with some actual f*cking fatalities.

'Mortal Kombat' Thrown Into Legal Match



The "Mortal Kombat" movie franchise is in legal limbo after a breach-of-contract lawsuit was filed against Warner Bros., which reportedly is developing a third film based on the once wildly popular video game.

Threshold Entertainment Inc. filed the action Tuesday in Los Angeles, claiming Warners had shut it out of production of the martial arts movie, in which it owns a licensing interest.

In the early 1990s, Threshold had entered into a partnership with arcade-game developer Midway to develop "Mortal Kombat" into a variety of media, including two feature films.

The lawsuit states that Threshold and Midway entered into an additional contract in 2006 to develop a third "Kombat" movie, including script development and pre-production.

But Midway filed for bankruptcy last February, and Warners successfully bid on its properties. Threshold says a federal bankruptcy court upheld its interests and licenses as a part of the sale.

The lawsuit states that Warners has "failed to work with Threshold in the development and production of the third 'Mortal Kombat' film," and has avoided communication with the Connecticut-based company, which has offices in Santa Monica. In late January, reports surfaced that a "Mortal Kombat" reboot by Warners was under way, including the hiring of a new screenwriter.

Damages are to be ascertained later, the lawsuit states.

Warner Bros. did not immediately return a message seeking comment left midday Wednesday by TheWrap.

What is Mortal Kombat: Rebirth?

Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

OMG the short movie is freakin awesome, did u guys manager to see how Subzero looks like, i try to play-pause-play-pause between 7:12 and finally see the flashback less than 1 sec Subzero's face... looks badass...

At first I thought it was his wife,but he said shogun,so..), searches the world for Sub Zero..killing hundreds in his quest, gets caught by the police then finally given Sub-Zero's location by Jax(just like in Rebirth)

Sometime in his quest he loses his eyes(again,just like in Rebirth)

But again,probably won't happen since Jax already has his arms blown off (and he had them in REBIRTH)

Wait... there's still the question of Johnny Cage... or he died in Rebirth? 

In any case... if the movie is in the works... I hope they pull it off well... and not going straight to video format

@Johnny Cage: yea,he dies-he went undercover after his film career hit shitcreek(much like it did in LEGACY) but the Baraka in REBIRTH is still different from the BARAKA in LEGACY,so....

Legacy and Rebirth are totally different la, the director said it edi...

But he said one thing for sure is that on the last episode, all the mini episode are linked together, which i find it hard to execute it lol

Ermac is in apparently. Noob is not in but maybe Bi-han will be. Stryker will be in as well. Kung Lao is in as well.

Oh maybe i guess im wrong about Ermac x Noob saibot and Johnny Cage x Stryker. Which is kung lao? I tot Raiden.. oops....

The dude who's bald. The one that wears the Shaolin costume. The one fighting(that look like a berseker) with Kenshi was Ermac. Stryker was the one using a gun. Cage is in it as well.
