Final Destination (series)

The Final Destination series is a series of fictional horror films created by James Wong and Glen Morgan, based on an unused X-Files script and characters created by Jeffrey Reddick. The films, distributed by New Line Cinema, mainly center on the themes of determinism, predestination, and precognition, in relation to death (i.e. how to avoid, foresee, or control it), as well as a related series of books (published by Black Flame) and comics (published by Zenescope Entertainment Inc). Visually, they center around killing people in a variety of elaborate and gory ways. Many of such death scenarios also resemble Rube Goldberg machines, with varying complexities and convolutedness.

Basic story

Premise

The premise to both the film and book series about death is essentially the same: A group of people are gathered together at a venue, when suddenly a member of the group has a premonition of a disaster that will kill all of the people present. Horrified and motivated by the vision of impending doom, the person with the premonition then tries to prevent the incident by alerting the others. The other members have doubts of the incredible claims but the visionary is persistent, fracturing the group in hostile skeptics, dubious believers, or those that had no choice but to accompany the visionary. Soon afterwards, disaster strikes as foreseen, proving to the survivors that the visionary was right, and their opinions change drastically.

Over the next few days, weeks or months, the same survivors begin to die in a series of horrific accidents and/or incredible circumstances until the same visionary notices a pattern and concludes that, while surviving the initial disaster, they are still destined to die shortly. The visionary usually teams up with another fellow survivor of the opposite sex, and they are determined to once again cheat death; then the same group devises various plans to survive that usually fail until the protagonist visionary finds a solution to their fate, having salvaged two or three of the others. At the end however, there is one fantastic event that kills most or all of the survivors.

Cheating Death

A recurring theme in each Final Destination film is the concept of truly defeating Death. Constant intervention proves to merely restart the list from the beginning. Once the list of Death's Design runs through, it returns to the beginning.

Final Destination

Final Destination is a 2000 supernatural thriller, about a group of teenagers who cheat death by avoiding a plane crash when one of them, Alex, has a premonition of their deaths. Soon after their escape, they begin dying one-by-one in mysterious freak accidents. The script was originally written by Jeffrey Reddick as a spec script for the X-Files. (Director James Wong worked as a writer, producer and director on that series.) The story shares similarities with an episode of The Twilight Zone titled "Twenty-Two". The film is distributed by New Line Cinema. The DVD was released on September 26, 2000. The film was the first in the Final Destination series, which has since produced three sequels and a series of books.

Final Destination takes place on Long Island. Locations such as Jones Beach and John F. Kennedy International Airport are shown. Nassau County is mentioned. However, Vancouver International Airport stood in for JFK.

Plot

Alex Browning (played by Devon Sawa) is going on a trip to Paris with his fellow peers on a school trip. However, before take-off Alex has a premonition that the flight he’s on explodes in mid-air. Alex then wakes up, revealing the events to be just a dream. However, as things from the dream begin to repeat themselves in reality, Alex panics and attempts to stop the flight. The resulting commotion leads to a handful of passengers being left behind. As they witness the accident from the gate, they realize that what Alex witnessed wasn’t just a dream. Soon after the survivors begin dying in chain of bizarre accidents, in the same order they would have died on the plane.

Characters

Alexander Chance "Alex" Browning (played by Devon Sawa): Alex is a student and the main character. He has the premonition that Flight 180 will explode, leading to a handful of passengers missing the flight.
Terry Chaney (played by Amanda Detmer): Terry is Carter's girlfriend.
William "Billy" Hitchcock (played by Sean William Scott): The jester of the group.
Carter Horton (played by Kerr Smith): Carter is an athlete who deeply resents Alex.

Clear Rivers (played by Ali Larter): Clear is a fellow classmate of Alex's.
Tod Waggner (played by Chad Donella): Alex's best friend.

Other characters

William Bludworth: William Bludworth is a man who knows about death more than anyone else. He tells Alex and Clear the secret of death. He is portrayed by Tony Todd.
Agent Schreck: Agent Schreck is an FBI agent who thinks it Alex's fault that Flight 180 exploded. He is portrayed by Roger Guenveur Smith.
Agent Weine: Agent Weine is an FBI agent who thinks it Alex's fault that Flight 180 exploded. He is portrayed by Daniel Roebuck.

Rating

Final Destination received an R rating in the United States for violence and terror, and for language. In the United Kingdom, it received a 15 rating. In Ireland, it received an 18 for violence, horror, and language.

The film is set in White Plains in 2001, a year after the events of the previous movie and has only two returning characters; Clear Rivers and the mortician William Bludworth. The movie grossed $16,017,141 on its opening weekend in the US, a significant portion of the high it grossed overall. It was a minor hit, debuting in its first week at #2 and falling from then onwards. It is succeeded by Final Destination 3.

Final Destination 3

user posted image

Final Destination 3 is a 2006 supernatural thriller, and the third film in the Final Destination series. Distributed by New Line Cinema, the film was directed and written by James Wong, who co-wrote and directed the original, and was produced by Craig Perry. The film was originally scheduled for release date on February 24, 2006, however the date was changed to two weeks earlier, February 10.

Plot

The movie opens with Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a soon-to-be high school graduate from McKinley High, visiting a theme park and photographing her friends. The group boards the roller coaster, and Wendy has a premonition that the coaster will crash, demands to be let off, and the attendant releases all the seats in the rear car. When the coaster leaves the station, it crashes, as predicted, taking her boyfriend and best friend in the front cart with it. Soon Wendy realizes that the people who survived are now dying in the order in which they sat on the roller coaster and tried to prevent further deaths.

Characters

Wendy Christensen: The protagonist, her friends tease her that she is too much of a worrier and a control freak. After having a premonition of the coaster's derailment, she saves several of her classmates, only to have them die one by one in even more gruesome ways. She is portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Kevin Fischer: Kevin is the supporting lead character. He was dating Wendy's friend before the crash and bands together with Wendy to help save the rest of survivors. He is portrayed by Ryan Merriman.
Ian McKinley: Artsy and moody, Ian is sarcastic, smart, and cynical. He is the school's Goth. Erin is his girlfriend, and they sat together on the roller-coaster. He is portrayed by Kris Lemche.
Erin Ulmer: Erin is also a Goth, equally artsy and cynical. Ian is her boyfriend, and they sat together on the coaster. She is portrayed by Alexz Johnson.
Julie Christensen: Julie is Wendy's sassy younger sister. She is portrayed by Amanda Crew.
Lewis Romero: Lewis is tough, enthusiastic, and the school's athlete. He was sitting alone on the coaster. He is portrayed by Texas Battle.
Frankie Cheeks: Frankie Cheeks, a clown, failure and pervert, is a graduate that still goes to high school events to videotape and hit on girls. He gets on the roller-coaster behind Ashley and Ashlyn. He is portrayed by Sam Easton.
Ashlyn Halperin: Ashlyn is a pretty brunette, popular, and shallow cheerleader. She was sitting next to Ashley on the roller-coaster. She is portrayed by Crystal Lowe.
Ashley Freund: Ashley, the blonde half of the duo is head cheerleader. She was sitting next to Ashlyn on the roller-coaster. She is portrayed by Chelan Simmons.

Rating

Final Destination 3 was rated R by the MPAA for strong horror violence/gore, language, and some nudity. It received a 15 certificate for the same reasons in the United Kingdom. In Germany, it received an 18 certificate, in contrast to the 16 received by the first two installments, due to the increased relative intensity of violence and gore.

Response

Final Destination 3 was successful both on film and DVD. The film was released in the United States on February 10, 2006, and opened at #2, showing across 2,880 screens with an opening weekend of $19 million U.S. dollars averaging to a little under $6,940 per theater. As of April 16, 2006, FD3 had made $54,098,051 stateside, though the movie continued to screen across the country for another seven weeks after domestic tallies closed. The film grossed even more in foreign markets, raking in over $59 million as of Early August. Worldwide recorded gross has now reached approx. $113,270,000 so far, outperforming both the original and first sequel in the series. As of late October 2006, Japan gross tallies have yet to be calculated. The DVD rentals reached nearly $45 million, making FD3 the longest running video in the top 50 chart of October 29 (www.boxofficemojo.com) and the 4th best grosser of the 50 films on the list.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film was rated at 46%. The original two films received equally poor scores. Besides deriding the film for the high level of violence and the reference to the attacks on the World Trade Center in September 2001, a common complaint directed at the film was that it failed to offer anything new. The BBC awarded a rare 1 star out of 5, after awarding the first installment four stars and the second three.

DVD release

The DVD has a unique feature called "Choose Their Fate". As the movie plays, menus pop up from time to time asking the viewer to make choices for the characters which affect the outcome of the plot. Possibilities include whether to call heads or tails during a coin flip (which prevents the characters from ever boarding the rollercoaster) and what temperature to turn the thermostat to in the tanning beds (which changes the cause of one of the deaths). One option allows the viewer to 'read' a newspaper detailing the deaths of Kimberly and Officer Burke from Final Destination 2.

Final Destination 3-D

Originally, Final Destination 3 was to be in 3-D because it would be the third in the franchise.[citation needed] When the movie was being filmed it was deemed too complicated and expensive, so the movie eventually was shot as usual. Although this idea was dropped for this film in the series ,the fourth installment, Final Destination 4, will be in 3-D, and is scheduled for theatrical release on August 21, 2009.

Immediately afterward objects begin to fly into the public as his frightening dream turns into a reality. Unfortunately for Nick, along with his friends Lori Milligan (Shantel VanSanten) and Janet Cunningham (Haley Webb), this is only the beginning. Warner Bros. '09: First Look at 'Final Destination: Death Trip 3D'

The big story of the day is Warner Bros. Pictures has officially renamed New Line Cinema's latest DESTINATION film to Final Destination: Death Trip 3D, while also providing us with the first two official images from the film now arriving in theaters August 21st, 2009. Directed by David R. Ellis, the story kicks off when a teenager's premonition of a deadly racecar crash spares his life and those of a few lucky others. But death continues to stalk those who escaped it. Check out the stills and the brand new full synopsis beyond the break.

On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave... escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one--in increasingly gruesome ways--Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination. The film marks the latest in the highly popular "Final Destination" series, and its first 3D installment, giving horror fans an especially visceral thrill ride.

Final Destination 1 was pure good film. 9/10 i should give.
but FD2 starting to get bored a bit. i still liked Devon Sawa and Ali Larter being together. 7.5/10
while FD3's antagonist is a freaked girl. but the deaths were really good 7/10

looking forward to this stuff. but the question is, will it arrives in msia?

this is lame. just to accommodate the 3-d effects, the causes of death are all things flying towards the victim

I was lucky to snag this elsewhere.
The deaths weren't really that gory. The gorier it is, the faker it looks. Some of the deaths were way over the top like what you see in FD2 (where someone gets killed by flying logs, and crushed by some heavy object from above). It just didn't look convincing. Especially the first death scene.
Theres a sex scene for less than 10 seconds. You get to see some boobs and thats about it. That whole scene will probably be cut here since it doesn't add anything to the story.
I thought the best part was the car wash scene were you get the see the victim slowly getting killed instead of instantly.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

FD3 was a bit more entertaining IMO.
FD1 is the best. FD2 was a bit laughable. FD3 brought back a bit of darknest that FD1 had.
I'll probably still watch it in 3D just to see if I'll run away when an object comes flying towards me.

3/5.

too fake

3/5. Please stop shooting Final Destination already...it's getting boring already

the best was FD1, 2 still acceptable and 3 is enjoying but 4 is ok ok only

like what masterelr said...that part is the only part worth seeing...the rest too fast too furious

I watched in 3D last week.

Verdict time.

The 3D isn't really that impressive like what I thought it would be. Thought there would be some blood splat on the screens where you'll get terribly shocked but well, sadly, I've seen none.

It wasn't that gory as compared to FD1 n 3, because most of the victim dies too fast :S slow deaths are more torturing imho. Still, it's my first 3D experience, can't say much, but I think it's still not bad.

Some of my friends told me it's either u watch it in 3D, or u dun watch at all lol.

I give it a 2/5. The worst FD of all time. It was not gory, not scary, too much CGI making it stupid (eg, like those pillar collapsing at the stadium), scenes that will never happen in real life, etc etc. FD 1 and 2 is still the best for me. It is like a comedy now rather than horror.

Edit: And the stupid ending too.

Tony Todd Will Return for Final Destination 5

user posted image

I distinctively remember Tony Todd being in the first “Final Destination” movie, then according to IMDB.com he showed up again in part three, but only as a voice character. His character is listed as “Devil”, but honestly, like most of the “Final Destination” movies, actors are secondary to the kills. Though I do recall that Mary Elizabeth Winstead was in part three, and even then she was already destined for better roles.

All that is to say that Todd himself has apparently confirmed that he will be returning for a third go-around in “Final Destination 5″, or as it’s being called, “5nal Destination”.

I shit you not. Some suit at the studio actually came up with that. “5nal Destination”. Yowsers.

In any case, part five will be directed by Steven Quale from a script by current “it” horror writer of the moment Eric Heissere (he’s penned remakes of “The Thing” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”), and will star a bunch of cannon fodder — er, I mean, actors you’ve never heard of, including Nicholas D’Agosto, Ellen Wroe, Meghan Ory, David Koechner, Miles Fisher and Arlen Escarpeta.

Okay, you might have heard of D’Agosto (below), who had a recurring role in a season of “Heroes” playing Claire’s flying boyfriend. The rest, though, were probably hired for a combination of good looks and cheap salary demands. I’m not saying they won’t have a whole lot to do, but you know, this is a “Final Destination” movie after all, so there ain’t a whole lot to do except get into position to be killed off one by one.

Part five is set for August 26th, 2011, and will be coming to you in — of course — 3D.

Emma Bell to Cheat Death, Flee Death, then Eventually Succumb to Death in Final Destination 5

user posted image

Hey, it’s not like I’m telling you anything that you don’t already know, right? All the Final Girls/Boys in the “Final Destination” movies end up dead, just like everybody else in the film. In fact, I can only recall one character who has survived from one “Final Destination” movie to another, and that was Ali Larter’s from the original, though if I remember correctly, she bit it in the second one.

Since then, though, all the leads have fought Death until the very end, when they think they’ve survived, only to realize — nope, Death ain’t so easy to shake. After all, it’s not like he has an appointment at the dentist or anything that would keep him from coming back to, you know, kill your dumb mortal ass.

All that is to say that Emma Bell, last seen in Adam Green’s frozen-to-death movie “Frozen”, has been cast as the female lead aka the Final Girl in the upcoming “Final Destination 5″ movie.

Bell is the latest 20-something to join a cast of 20-somethings including P.J. Byrne, Tony Todd, David Koechner, Meghan Ory, Nicholas D’Agosto, Ellen Wroe, Arlen Escarpeta and Miles Fisher. Props to you if you know more than one name on that list.

Steven Quale directs the 3D horror film, which is scheduled for 2011.

Final Destination 5 Official Plot is Expectedly Final Destination-ish

Well, at least you gotta give them credit: the makers of the “Final Destination” movies definitely know a good thing when they see it, and are loathe to make any changes whatsoever to the formula. That’s, you know, admirable, right?

Anyways, here’s the official “Final Destination 5″ presser from New Line Cinema:

QUOTE
Production is underway on New Line Cinema’s fifth installment of the “Final Destination” franchise, which began back in 2000, with the original film quickly becoming a cult hit. The new victims of Death’s plan are part of a cast led by Emma Bell (Frozen, TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Nick D’Agosto (Fired Up!, TV’s “Heroes”). The film is being shot on location in Vancouver, Canada.

The second of the “Final Destination” films to be shot in 3-D, Final Destination 5 is being directed by Steve Quale, marking his major feature film directorial debut. Producer Craig Perry (”American Pie”) returns for the fifth time, working with executive producers Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Erik Holmberg, Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and David Neustadter. The screenplay was written by Eric Heisserer, with revisions by Gary Dauberman; Heisserer is no stranger to the horror genre, having penned New Line’s recent hit A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Final Destination 5 brings together an ensemble cast that includes Bell and D’Agosto, along with Miles Fisher (TV’s “Mad Men” and “Gossip Girl”), Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (TV’s “The Bold and the Beautiful”), P.J. Byrne (Dinner for Schmucks) and Ellen Wroe (TV’s “Huge”). Rounding out the rest of the cast are Courtney B. Vance (TV’s “FlashForward,” “ER”), David Koechner (”The Office,” Anchorman) and “Final Destination” franchise icon Tony Todd (Hatchet II).

In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man’s premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda.

Collaborating with Steve Quale behind the scenes are director of photography Brian Pearson (Drive Angry 3D, My Bloody Valentine 3D); production designer David Sandefur (Repo Men, Journey to the Center of the Earth); editor Eric Sears (Shooter) and costume designer Jori Woodman (Eight Below).

I like how they don’t even pretend that the characters are anything other than would-be fodder for Death (they just call them “new victims of Death’s plan”). That’s just awesome.

Actually, the swimming pool death scene is based on true event in Russia (I think). But the victim was a little girl.

Squirm All You Want, the Final Destination 5 Trailer Will Still Get Ya

user posted image

The “Final Destination 5″ trailer has hit the Interwebs. Check it out below, people who enjoy checking out movies where Death stalks pretty young people, while old black people like Tony Todd provide ominous words of warning that, in all likelihood, no one bothers to follow. As with the previous four movies, the fifth “Final Destination” involves a bunch of people who survives a devastating accident thanks to some kid getting a vision, only to have Death return to stalk them in brutal and clever ways. Hey, if it ain’t broke, etc, etc.

By the way, the opening death scene with the laser eye surgery bit? That would have made me squirm like the Devil maybe ten years ago, but since I’ve already gone under the laser, if you will, it’s just amusing now since, you know, I survived it and all.

Starring Emma Bell, Nicholas D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, David Koechner, Courtney B. Vance, and Tony Todd as the Old Man Who Knows Stuff, surely a staple of teen horror movies if there ever was one.

Killin’ in clever and stylish ways August 12, 2011.

The best accident was in the freeway scene.. fuuuuuuu, so scary, because we/i drive car everyday.

1st- plane. Not everyday we take flight.
3rd - Roller Coaster. My last roller coaster ride was 4 years ago.
4th - Circuit. Also same.

Came back watching a sneak preview...

Well... the movie was 1/2 made for 3D... the other 1/2 was more normal than usual. The opening sequence was definitely 3D related... but if you ask me - skip the 3D.

In terms of how FD5 is... well... its more gore than shock value. The plot is rather thin (as usual) and the effects is... well... usual FD2 & 4. Still, FD fans may not get the same juice as the 1st FD and 3rd chapter. The cast is just plain boring and not really even interesting... and how they die is rather something anyone can guess...

On the upside... and if you do not want to spoil yourself if you are seriously wanting to watch FD5 (please do not open the spoiler):-

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Overall:- Its the usual gorefest but no longer the shock value it gives. Some of the audience in the cinema even laugh at how the supposed victims die... I still feel its good... and seriously... this sequel ties up everything... 2 out of 5 star.

NOTE:- At the beginning, some death scenes are censored... which was annoying.

I have to agree with u ..

The 3D thingy was only flashing on the first introduction the shattered name introduction .. overall the whole movie was some got 3D some are not to be scene due to the censorship which was sucks .. i managed to watch this at 12.15pm alone . ya foreveralone.jpeg lolz laugh.gif ..

they censor the death scenes but they didnt censor the f*** YOU in the work card, the f*** f*** the negro say or whether the dude say i forgot already which on say f*** but got f*** la ..

the bridge colapse was so so ..

i have to say this movie was so so only BECAUSE if you already scene the SPIKE Tv user posted image roughly the idea was taken from the tv show wheres the gimnas accident the accupanture was taken from the movie .

the worth part of the movie was the CANDICE part

the lead actor kinda a bit stiff .. the other guy seems look like tom crusie lolz ..

that is because death intends to test the subject about the death itself . you cannot escape death as mortal beings are pathetic so death wanna test the mortals .

I believe this is an oversight by the writers. The movie of the 1st Final Destination was release in 2000 but the story was based in the year of 1999... laugh.gif

i dont dare to watch the laser eye part as i'm a specky girl. watched the real laser eye operation before and and might op for this in future. doesn't want it to influence me to choke a teddy bear in the future. llolol

wouldn't recommend anyone to watch it at the cinemas 'cause it's quite heavily censored.
