Micheri was bought from one of those stores who gave the piggies nothing but pellets and bread so it also took her a while to get used to vege. I suggest you lower the amount of pellets a little and give more vege. Not just stuff like carrots and cucumbers, but more nutritious stuff like dark leafy greens. Slowly accustom your piggie to take vege. When changing diets, you must do it slowly to avoid stuff like diarrhea. You must teach her to eat stuff other than those she likes. Piggies are like us in the sense that they can't produce their own Vitamin C. So they must get it through their food, thus the need for vege and fruits in their diet. About pellets, what brand are you using? Maybe your piggie doesn't like that sort. My ladies don't like those dried vege or fruit pieces kinda pellets like Gerty. They only take those full pellet ones. |

I don't recommend broccoli. It produces a lot of gas in the stomach.

Well, piggies are rodents. All rodents do their business in 1 place. The problem is getting them to do it IN the tray.

OMG. How come? Did she fight with your other piggies? Was she sick?
I hope you will monitor your other piggies closely. If your moo moo was sick, it could be contagious and your other pigs may have it. BTW I'm so sorry. This post has been edited by Jamien: Nov 3 2008, 05:01 PM |

Bleeding from mouth, rectum or genitals:
Any bloody discharge should be considered serious. Causes can be internal hemorrhaging, bladderstones, pregnancy complications; minutes can make a difference with treatment. Note: female guinea pigs do not exhibit a menstrual flow. Blood is abnormal and should be considered a serious matter. from http://www.cavyinfo.com/html/emergency.html Looks like any signs of bleeding in a guinea pig is an extremely serious case. |

@dark twilight: just in case, better bring for a check up. Since any sort of bleeding is serious, it's better to be safe than sorry. Early detection can save lives. Better to be sure than just guessing right?

OMG they look absolutely adorable!!! Do they actually play with the bell ball? Micheri largely ignores it unless it rolls too close to her bowl.

Actually it depends on you. Most members just use the toilet mat. I use newspaper with shavings on top. Whatever works as long as your piggie doesn't stand on grills.

Take to a vet, get a jab, solve the problem. Hairloss might be caused by mites and lice or even fungus.

Actually I just use a small hamster cage. They're not going traveling with me. Traveling is stressful. They go to a trip to the vet and then instantly back. Something narrow will make them feel more safe.
So you can just use the normal plastic container or use a hamster cage. But only for transporting purposes. The cage your piggies live in have to be much bigger and wider. |
