iPhone 3G on sale 8 a.m. July 11; no-contract iPhone on tap



Looks like we'll have to get up bright and early to buy the new iPhone. Also, AT&T says a "no-commitment" iPhone is "coming soon."

First things first: The new iPhone 3G will go on sale at 8 a.m. next Friday at AT&T retail stores and Apple stores. So if you're planning on lining up, you'd better be ready well before sunrise.

Also, AT&T has finally clarified pricing for current AT&T subscribers who want the iPhone 3G.

In a nutshell, if you're "upgrade eligible" (log into your AT&T account to see if you are), you'll be able to buy the new iPhone for the discounted price of $199 for the 8GB version or $299 for the 16GB model. (AT&T is somewhat vague about the eligibility criteria, although your credit history and the time remaining on your contract are factors.) You'll also have to pay an $18 "upgrade fee."

If you're not eligible for the discount, you'll have to fork over extra for an "early upgrade"-$399 for the 8GB iPhone 3G or $499 for the 16GB model. Ouch.

AT&T also says that a "no-commitment" (read: no contract) iPhone 3G will be available soon, at $599 for the 8GB version and or $699 for the 16GB handset. Pricey, but hey-no two-year contract.

Unfortunately, AT&T won't offer the new iPhone on a prepaid basis, at least not at launch.

Some other items: You will have to get your new iPhone activated at the store, and that means a credit check. So bring a photo ID and your Social Security number (especially if you're not yet an AT&T customer). If you want to cut down on the wait, you can go to an AT&T store now and take care of the credit check early.

There have been some rumors that current iPhone users could simply register the IMEI number of their new iPhone with AT&T clerks-meaning they could finish activating their phones at home. It's a nice idea, but so far, there's no indication from AT&T that such a plan exists.

As for the newly detailed rate plans, there aren't any surprises. Each plan comes bundled with unlimited data; $70 a month gets you 450 minutes and 5,000 night/weekend minutes, while a 900-minute plan with unlimited nights/weekends goes for $90. A 1,350-minute plan will cost $110 per month. Family plans are available, and business data plans will cost $45 a month (versus $30 per month for standard data in the bundled plans). Text messages are extra, too. Individuals pay $5 for 200 texts per month, $15 for 1,500 a month, or $20 for unlimited texting. For family plans, you'll pay $30 a month for unlimited messaging.

looks like it will still locked with the respective telco although it is contract-free. just like the O2 Pay n Go version of iPhone in UK.
btw from what i've read, O2 UK will unlock the prepaid version of the iPhone after 1 year of usage (with a fee i presume). dunno if AT&T will implement the same way. looks like it will be a good news for the "oh i dun want the unlock version" type of people, if got some relative from where the iPhone is purchased.
until then, use the iPhone with unofficial unlock. nyum nyum nyum. hope the new iPhone can be easily unlocked.

i would rather said

599.00 USD = 1,952.35 MYR 2500 reasonable

no doubt that is consider good price... but its for seller to determine and market to justify. even if they will be expensive but i can tell you there is also buyers. iphone 3g unlocked will be exclusive at that moment until the price drop and 32GB version is out.

this reminds me a lot when the first gen iphone came out, when it was not compatible with maxis (loads of problems, early users can testify towards this).


as much as i was compelled to purchase one, i had to wait out as i do not wish to join the crowd for the sake of it, or subscribing to an other network etc etc etc.


hence, only once maxis managed to sort MOST of its problems out, only i felt more relieved to purchase one.

Ya lo...consider it a GPS and all in one with feature rich phone...but still a little "disappointed" coz before that people keep telling that the 2nd gen will be so much cheaper than 1st gen iphone coz Apple announce it at USD$199...

some lifeless people (through vigorous experiments) found that not all paint will adhere to the aluminium surface perfectly (may be easily scratched off, fade off etc) due to some industrial material incompatibilities (???!!!).


hence my advise to all wanting to do that is, to do a more thorough research before proceeding. dont just hop to some ah hock hardware store and purchase a rm15 black/white spray can and end up regretting later.

Yes u r right...the iphone 3G is an opportunity for people to earn money but at the same time, also create lots of opportunity for people to scam and cheat money...

I would recommend COD to buy the phone...other than to make sure the seller is genuine, also to make sure the phone is working and compatible with your local network.

i can put this thread up, saying that i have some "lubang" in china to obtain unlocked 3g iphones but limited quantity (lets say 200 units) in the next fortnight. however to confirm your reservation, i need rm200 as a deposit directly into my bank account. i am very certain that within the next 48 hours, i will obtain a perfect 200 buyers and a cool rm40000.


and i can safely plan my getaway as i have 2 weeks to lari to mainland china (ironic i know). ha ha

ya. better to COD it, where you can see it for your self and pay the money directly to the seller, eventhough it far from ur home/place, like me, i rather travel from penang to kl just want to cod the expensive sexy iphone price till 2k, if me, other people i don't know, maybe or maybe not.

I just feel that no hurry about making the deposit...more over, lets pray that maybe after the first batch, due to competition, price will drop a bit and sometimes 1st batch is kind of a "experiment" sets, where after people use it, if there is any problem, then people will tell and seller will try to solve it bla...bla...bla...

i predict those dudes bringing in 3g iphones in light of the newly announced price without contract are gonna set a cool 3k or more pricetag for the 16gb version since its 699USD. top it off with the usual compulsory 10% tax required for electronics purchase in the states and shipping costs, be thankful if the 16gb doesnt cost more than 3k here in malaysia. the sellers here will definitely wanna make a cool 500-600 per phone, since they actually started charging 2.3k for a new 1st version 16gb iphone when it first hit the shores(unlawfully) here, which was like a cool rm500 profit, considering that the exchange rate at that time was 3.4. do the maths (rm2.3-18**)
