Hey guys,

Could I have please have your input on a project I am thinking and eventually do it within this month where we put up a notice in LY.net or any famous Malaysian forums for old computers of a certain spec(we should consult the guys more familiar with Xubuntu or Puppy Linux for the min spec),take it in and make sure it is in working condition(if not,try to source parts for it). Then, install a customized version of Ubuntu or whatever Linux distribution we find to be useful for our target audience and we then pass the refurbished computers to charities e.g orphanages or old folks home.I believe that we,the Malaysian rakyat, have a duty to play to the less abled and since linux can cater for anything with the right amount of work on it(sans the money),we can seriously achieve some major things on it.

The main reason I am doing this is the state of computers in charities which is running a virus ridden spyware infested system that is not targeted for them. Also,a lot of times these computers are not "cleaned" and still run company software and have traces of the previous owner in it.Apart from that,I am also thinking that because there are educational softwares for the lower grades available on the linux platform,we can use that and with a system that requires lower overheads, the system can fly and feel fresh for repeated usage over and over again.

What do you guys think about it?I would love to hear from you guys and even have a TT session as soon as possible as I would really like to start acting on the project.I could also put up a wiki if you guys are interested to discuss it off this forum. If anyone needs anymore information, would like to express their interest or guide me in the correct light, please feel free to PM me.

Regards,

I would love to participate as a reporter of some sort in this project as it progresses smile.gif Will contribute in any other way possible of course. Mostly logistic.

I'm not so sure, but I remember seeing Muhammad Nur Hanief offering computer-related services with low/no charges. Perhaps you can start from there?

As for the hardwares, I guess we'll have to ask for donation openly.

k so this is some pretty quiet response, just some updates on my side.I have started playing around with Ubuntu and seeing if there is a way to quickly deploy a customized image quickly so I can pass it to you guys if you ever need it.Further more,a website pointing to a blog would be put up and I will start calling for donations of computers.Cheers and have a great day

This is a great idea - increasing children's employability index and providing basic computers for everyday use. I like it! Good job!

I give away my pc's to orphanage that is run by SFX church, yearly. The kids wanted a DVD drive for this year & i actually plan to install dual boot XP/Ubuntu on my hardware : Sempron 1.6Ghz+1g RAM+40G HDD+CDROM+DVDROM+20'CRT+Apple white casing/keyboard/mouse. Let me know if there are any big ideas, but more importantly small actions first.
