Yesterday I have done two mistakes, turn on and off my external hard drive in a short period of time and also remove it from the computer without safely remove hardware because it always hang. Now it is unreadable and corrupted. Can anyone suggest me any software to use? Or is there any shop in Klang Valley that can fix, repair and recover data from a broken external hard drive? Any information and help would very much appreciated. I have too much important data in the 500gb external hard drive! Thanks in advance!

You can try using many softwares first. Got quite a few data recovery software even in LYN forum. Try searching.

The last time I tried to repair MBR but no avail. Then I tried to chkdsk /f also failed. Then finally I used the software and just transfer the files out through the software. The drawback is just that if you got 500gb of data you'll need 500gb of space to recover all of the data.

Thx! I also think the same. I'm going to buy another external hard drive. Do you know how much would it cost if I send it to shop to do all the data recovery?

OMG RM4000++? I absolutely would not send it to shop then. Yup, I'm going to buy another external hard drive. However, I really need data from the existing external hard drive. I've read somewhere that I can actually partition the bad sectors? Will it delete the existing data in it? I was really hoping that I can recover back all the data intact. Huhu..

Added on June 28, 2008, 3:26 amNope I didn't drop it. I did those 2 things that corrupt my HD, switch it on and off several times and remove the USB cable without Safely Remove Hardware. But I only did it yesterday for the first time. Waaa

1 250gb

I been doing what you been doing for the past 6 years.

My mistake is not partitioning it earlier and this problem would be solved easier. Any software that you would suggest me to use?

For me i recovered a 100% deleted data ive used R-Studio

if u buy and repair at the same time and place, try to ask for free reapir la.. hehe.. maybe it will work .... after all, if u spend at a shop, normally the shopkeeper will treat u with better services. right??

err... correct me if i'm wrong, low level format actually ERASE the data and not RECOVER the data rite??

BIOS still detect HDD, there always hope for recovery. D.I.Y. = F.O.C.

depend on what you recovering.
for all data, get the new HDD => larger size (e.g. 200GB = 200GB/250GB)
partial document (e.g. *.doc *.xml) any size HDD will do. <= depend yr software support "recovery later"

i haven't tried to remove HDD from external casing yet because i bought it as an external set. maybe ishould try it but i'm afraid opening the external casing might cause more damage. advice?

try Runtime GetBackData (somethin like that, nt sure). It works for me all the time. I hope u actually try and solve the problem without just complaining and resort to data recovery at shops.

Professional data recovery is an extreme measure, meant for people who have very important data and a very badly damaged hard drive.

My friend had a 40GB that he dropped from about 5ft (GG!) and as a result the circuitboard cracked. He had no choice so sent for prof data recovery - they take the platters out and perform magnetic scan 1 by 1. Cost - about 1k plus.

In your case, if it's just corrupt, yup, use software. Earlier there was a post about low level format. Do not do that lol.

A 500GB external HDD: that tells me that it is a 3.5 inch. And most likely a SATA these days.

Have you tried taking out the HDD and conecting it to the Mobo? I suspect it is a issue with the SATA-to-USB bus.

In anycase, I recommed connecting the HDD DIRECTLY to the mobo, not via the USB bus, if you want to perform any form of data recovery. Personally I have a beef with SATA-to-USB buses, but the fact still remains you need some sort of low level access to do some types of data recovery, which USB is not capable of.

Is it a 3.5" or 2.5" external HDD?

Bro..ur corrupt means u cannot access ur HDD but u still can see it in your Disk Management n BIOS? B'coz if u mention alwiz hang...i think ur HDD got problem...and yeah data recovery is VERY expensive

It's been 2 days now and I'm trying on R-Studio. However, because I don't have much disk space left in my internal hard disk, I've tried to repartition it using Windows Vista disk management and now I'm in another trouble with partitions. Am trying to resolve it now. Will update you guys.
