Waachaaa

Q1. Is Syrian hamster the chubbiest, fattest looking hamster among the 5 species? If not which species is that?
Ans: all animals can be chubby if they are well feed, but syrian is the biggest size in hammi family.

Q2. Correct me if im wrong, i read on the 1st page stating 2 Syrian hamster shall not be placed in the same cage. But i was wondering how come those petshop able to place groups of the same species under the same cage?
Ans: Pet shop do not have soooo much space to seperate them into single tank, also most of the pet shop do not care.  so don't simply go any petshop to get ur hammi. smile.gif

Q3. How much lifespan is an average Hamster? Or they varies between species?
Ans: about 2 yrs +-

Q4. I still have doubts placing a SINGLE Syrian hamster in a cage will not bored it to death. I always thought the more the merrier.
Ans: Syrian is SOLITARY, so there is no 'bored' in their dictionary.

I'm new here too...
was thinking to get my new hampster around this week, but got few question here...

at previous ur reply to Waachaa, u mention not to simply buy hamster at any petshop..then where should i buy them from?
Any shop suggest me to get all the stuff for the hamster? example: cages, food and etc
among all the species of hamster, which type is more sociable?

QUOTE(neshie @ Jul 1 2008, 02:20 PM)
Buy hamsters from breeders. but there are also unethical breeders, so do ask around for a good breeder..
You can actually purchase from pet stores, but sometimes hamsters from petstores aren't tamed.
You can get your hamster stuffs from any pet shops, but you gotta keep in mind that there are shops who carry stuffs that aren't good for hammies. Eg. Pine shavings and such. Do make more research before purchasing your pet and the items..
I can say robo's are more sociable than the rest, though RC's can be mixed in a small group with conditions. biggrin.gif

yah....thats y now collecting more "data" from all sifu sifu over here loh.... tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif
buy hamster from breeders ? hmmm....ok...or got any recommend breeders ?

QUOTE(blurjoey @ Jul 1 2008, 02:26 PM)
We will suggest you try Pet Shack in Mentari Park, Sunway. You can also check out JTL's thread for started kits. Also JTL's syrian hamsters are quite tame.

Better to get from home breeder than those mass breeders that supply to big pet shops.

Syrians are recommended for first time hamster owner.

after think think....will get syrians.......

So now i stuck in middle like...If get Syrian i need to get fish tank for her, if get critter trail i'll need to get other species of hamster......really hard to decide....

Oh yah, the PetShack owner really a nice person....

Yes.. What the owner said is correct. Syrian does not suitable to be housed in those nice nice cage like Critter Trail or Habitrail Safari. I'm thinking to change mine to fish tank as well. Small cage can affect the size of a Syrian when it is still in growing stage. Mine did. My girl was in the same batch as nezu's Brownie & what nezu told me that last time Brownie was smaller than Creamy. But now Brownie is a lot bigger than Creamy. So please do get those fish tank type if you decide to get a Syrian.  smile.gif
*
hmmmm.......ok....ok..ok.....then I will go for Syrian and fish tank......damn.....really can't wait, feel like after work straight away go pet shop and buy them.....

yes the 2 ft plastic guppy tank is best.. if u hv budget n want very the best, get zoozone hehhehe... fansy fansy cage is too small for syrian..
wire cage, when they chew on it, its annoying. also may injurt their nose n eye.  n like babymoli say. normal big wire cage is not nice.
*
zoozone looks not bad also....but cost RM110 sweat.gif
so most probably will go for fish tank loh...
oh yah, those roller so expensive one ?!! The petShack owner recommend me one roller from US and is cost about RM60++ ...I was shock that the roller is the most expensive among all the things.....is it like that ?

If you don't want to get the Wodent Wheel Jr, you can opt for the Sanko 21cm Silent Wheel which cost about RM10 cheaper. There is also those cheaper wheels but from past experience some will be noisy after some hammy marathons.

Remember that syrian hamsters requires at least 8" wheel or long term use of smaller wheels will have bad effect on their back and neck.

ic...ic.........
well,i'm being asking around and search in the net....
for syrian mostly ppl suggest use fish tank or ir those storage tank........
but i also saw ppl use those fancy tank....weird.....

Those fancy one looks nice for interior design to human, but the fish tank is the best for the hamster. smile.gif

Wooden wheel is worth every single cents, to me. My hamster spend most of him time there. It is so stable, never 'terbalik', and not noisy.
*
yah....PetShack Owner told me about it tooo....

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Jul 2 2008, 09:34 PM)
Actually, the best type of housing for EVERY species of hamster is a tank. We not talking about glass tanks.... just light weight plastic ones that are nice to look at and easy to clean. Critter Trail, Habitrail, Sanko WILD cages.... what ever fancy cages, all is just for us to admire and buy coz cute and nice. But it doesn't really provide a good home. Worst is the washing! You will get headache washing Critter Trail coz the cage connectors are not as easy to snap back like Habitrail, very prone to breaking. I used both Critter Trail and WILD before, connectors all snap. Also, the pee and poo in the tubes, the cage bar chewing..... stressful.

Pet Shack gives proper advice, if comparing with other petshops. Pet Shack at Sunway, Pet Epicure at Taman Melawati.... these pet shops are ethical and have done their research to educate their customers.

Oh yah, a tank is easier to hand tame your hamster. A cage can cause pet shop hamsters to become defensive.
Firstly, wire ones can become rusty. They do provide good ventilation but hamster pee is corrosive, and can cause the cage bars to become rusty. Also, the cage bars would cause a hamster to chew on it, this will become a bad habit coz the metal when it reacts with saliva, it taste salty, and hamsters like to chew on salty metal. Then the rust is bad for health when ingested, it can cause poisoning.

For taming, a tank is bigger for you to use your hands to interact with your hamster and pick it up properly. A cage only has a little door, and if you put your hand into the cage, the hamster would feel afraid and become defensive. Also with tubes to hide in, taming is a hassle.

I already mention the cleaning part too.... A tank is so easy to clean.
We got say glass tanks? We all use either plastic storage box or plastic fish tanks. Go to Pet Shack to get one. Pet Safari won't have it and their staff would just recommend you to buy expensive cages which in the end may not be a practical cage and a waste of money.
Whatever they recommend.... they not recommending coz they wanna push expensive stuff to you. They are letting you know what is the best and most practical to get. So listen to them loh. Wodent Wheel is one of the best.... expensive but best wheel for hamsters and sugar gliders.
Provide more food bowls. This is normal. Hierarchy.... you can either separate him or keep him inside but put more bowls and more things for them to hide in. No blood kinda fights rite?
Letting your hamster eat such snacks is nothing cute and funny to laugh about. Crackers, biscuits, cereal... alot have high salt, sugar and fat content.... you may just be giving him liver problem later on.
*
Yah...now already decide to get Fish Tank.....

QUOTE(StellaBabe @ Jul 2 2008, 11:06 PM)
Dont worry is not salted 1.. purchase from pet shop..
Still got some snacks similar with biscuit crunch..
but is suitable to feed hamster..
(eg, green colour bean crunch, etc...)
He like to eat very much...

This is another chubby hamster...
but i separate them.. Don't know y, they just can't stay together..
So.... have to be alone lo.. pity cute hamster...

I don't think we can easily find satin or rex syrians in KL unless you are willing to hamster hunting around. Not just in KL only but around Malaysia.

But I think we can find them in Singapore but very troublesome to bring them back over. Smuggling in is dangerous for you and the hamster. So not really worth it. If declare, its very expensive plus the hamster might get quarantine in customs for some time.

Anyway the satin syrian that passo loco is selling, we are not sure is the fella is healthy or not. Also how old s/he is and all. So it's gamble to get the fella.
*
Singapore got ? hmmm...then mayb can try find it around Johor.......
I think there sure got the way to bring in,mayb can ask the pet shop to order or something....

QUOTE(sangels @ Jul 3 2008, 06:33 PM)
That's not as easy like what you said, or else we already can get it in KL long time ago. If the hamsters can come into Malaysia from Singapore so easily, the hamsters can always travel up to KL, but so far we are still don't have any here. Singapore custom is very straight and getting tight after all the incidences. If pet shop willing to bring in, who willing to pay over RM100 or more for one hamster which are not young as they need quarantine for some time and the hamster already fully grown when they reach the pet shop. The hamsters will also get stress and might die during the quarantine due to no proper care. No one willing to pay for the died hamster with high price. Too many consequences to do that.  sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

Singapore custome mostly staright to malaysian, but not singaporian.....if got car will be more easy....

Heee. yeah! one day i wanna keep RC's and Robos. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif today i went to Carrefour, then to the pets section. Then this lady was buying two winter whites, and i was like telling my friend " NOOO should i tell her that you cant keep WW's together etcetc" i was like sooooo ready to tell her and advice her but then i dunno whether it'd be advisable or not.  sweat.gif

Gee. Lets say we see people in pet stores buy hamster stuff, or hamsters, then we know that they're doing the wrong thing, is it OK to advice them?

Plus he don like people to give him good advise cuz it questions his "expertise" feelings.  shakehead.gif

Just get Nezu's smoothies. It comes in assorted flavors and are a mix of 8 different kinds of veges and fruits and other stuff. It's really healthy and it helps your hamster gain weight and be chubby chubby in a healthy way. If you have the smoothie you don't really have to worry about fresh food. You can get it at Pet Shack.

About those frozen veges...
sweat.gif I don't really think you should. I think they use some sort of chemicals to preserve the freshness. Plus those veges aren't much for nutritional value. It's just peas, carrot and corn right?

@coltrain: Share with us some pictures~ Did you get smoothie for your syrian?
