ok, i've decided to go with jtl's rm180 starter kit, thanks for the recommendation and advice guys thumbup.gif

oh yea, i'm thinking of buying bathing sand too, should i buy a container or something for the sand? unsure.gif

also, how do you actually train a hamster to use a litter pan? unsure.gif

The package is good enough for your Syrian. thumbup.gif Syrian do not need bathing sand, just toilet sand will do. You can use a ceramic bowl / clay bowl for the toilet sand (the brown color bowl which shown in jtl's package). There's different between bathing sand and toilet sand as toilet sand is not as fine as bathing sand. The most important thing is the tank and the wheel which is at least 8 inches in diameter so Wodent wheel is the best for them. If you do not have very high budget, then get the plastic aquarium tank instead of stainless steel bar cage as I don't think there's any in the market as the cost is too expensive, can get ZooZone2 with the price already.

#Jayniel#

When we decided to get a bigger tank for JackJack, we are looking at ZooZOne1 also, but after compare the price, there's only a bit different and much bigger space, so ended up with ZooZone2. Luckily get ZooZone2 as JackJack now can jump so high, if ZooZone1 for him maybe he can escape already. sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif Really make me sweat every time I heard him jumping 'dung, dung, dung' when he landed. rclxub.gif

No need if you can't afford it. You can get the ceramic bowl / clay bowl (brown color) for it, it cost less than RM8 in KL and less than RM5 in Ipoh. The sand also not so easy to come out when they dig inside.

My black banded boy likes to sit inside his toilet and just day dream. Cute. Now he got longish fur around his bum, like a skirt.

Anyway, I was looking at Garage Sales.... kinda mad with people saying Syrians can be kept in pairs or group. The latest reply was plain wrong....

QUOTE
quite agree with u laa...but i not mix my syrian..coz stil afford to buy each cage for each hammy...

hmm...coz.like people..some like to be lonely...some like to be around others...n some happy live lonely..some cannot...

hamster also can be like that...mayb ur hamster a bit lucky..can stay together de...

i also experience see some one raise golden hammy 8yrs ago...he kept about 5 in 1 tank...happily ever after..never fight...no see any injured hammy...until the golden hammy is like 50 of them...and the cage is no more than 15...

so...i think not all hamster have solitary soul....like robo...people think they can live in group...but some of the robo may not like live in group...that solitary gak...

dun fire2 people laaa....do what u like laa...if the ham get into fight and later die ke..not ur sin...its the owner sin...the more hammy die, the more the owner's sin...

Don't you guys think this kinda advice is wrong?

Put 5 Syrians in 1 small cage of course they don't fight much coz no territory but they dislike living together. Is like making them suffer.... They do fight, just people dunno coz hamsters are active when we are asleep most of the time......

haha...thats my words....jz say i'm the one send laaa...no hide2...tersirat2...
i'm jz saying some...not all ok...

as i know syrian most solitary de...thats y mine i kept alone...i said..i saw people one de...everyday go kacau their hamster...n never see any injured...<or the hammy have some kind of magic...night--fight until luka2...then in the morning b4 we wake up..they use antidote meh???thats y i dun see any injuries>>

i say through my experience...why lie if its true...

i mention again..i say some..not all syrian..okeyh...

You would just be making newbies buy to experiment with this sort of Syrian keeping style. Did I say hide? I said the Garage sale... people already know who open the thread. You want me to type out your username is BIG LETTERS and bold it?

Never see any injure.... take a look closely as in split the fur, sure can see bite marks. If never handle and look carefully, sure cannot see. But then they cannot even fight coz got no territory. Another thing is the Syrians would be more miserable. In the WILD, they are solitary, if in captivity we make them live in groups, don't you think it is torture? If Syrians do not fight in groups, then why all books, breeders, international hamster clubs all put advice saying syrians are solitary? Facts are facts, experience can be different depending on situations. If "SOME" Syrians can live in pairs or groups... then why those hamster clubs, breeders and books never say? Is it coz they do not experience it?

Also, using human emotions and relating to animal emotions is just wrong. We can think, negotiate, understand.... but animals mainly go by instinct.

Why petshop hamsters are all in 1 tank with 50 inside? Why never fight? Coz there is just no space to fight about and being miserable, they couldn't be bothered with arguing over space to live in.

I have kept hamsters for the past 12 years.... every pet species of hamster except Chinese Dwarf.

i remember when i was young and staying with cousins, they recieved two syrians as a gift, got quite a big fancy tank, but they fought like mad and one had to stay in a small dingy observation box like thing while the other one conquered most of the box, poor bugger sad.gif

The fact is syrian don't like living with each other and like to conquer and have as much territory as possible. The same as no 2 lions can have the same territory in Africa, 2 syrians cannot live well together.

I mean, why do you wanna let one of your hamster keep cowering and running away from the dominant hamster and live so terribly for the short 2 years of life that it only has?

We are not petshop owners who have no choice but to house a few hamsters together. We are plain hobbyist who should be able to give the hamsters most things it needs to live.

If the owner of the thread don't like it that we tell him the methods are wrong, then the least we could do is to not encourage people to buy into wrong facts.

Since syrians are solitary, there's no such thing as luck or no luck. It is in their nature that they don't like each other ad don't wanna see each other other than to breed.

To be honest, The second day I brought Ferro home, I wanted to take a picture of both of them together. Ferro was less than 2 months old and Roche was 2 months (supposedly). Their territorial instict is not out yet but non the less Roche chased Ferro around in a very unfriendly fashion. I conclude it's because she has her own territory (her cage) and does not like the idea of another hamster around. Ferro got so trauma that when I let him walk on the table i put both their cages on, he smelled her, and turned around and flew right off the table without second thought.

Don't do this to your hamsters... They deserve everything they need.

I use the same one for Ferro and Roche. They're both bouncing off the walls in my living room in the same balls as those.

If your syrian isn't too big it's fine. Nezu's hammmies cannot use those lar. tongue.gif There is one size bigger for hedgehogs and other larger sized small animals.
