I'm actually looking for a summer course. I would like to spend a summer in Germany, at the same time learning German.
But it seems language learning is not cheap. =(

I'm wondering if the German government or any other universities offer free (or with scholarships or grants) some German language course that I could take over the summer..

where r u going to stay ???? munchen?? frankfurt?? they do have language class called : "GERMAN SUMMER SCHOOL" thats alll i know.. haha sweat.gif
Thanks for your reply.
I'm open to any location really. I've actually been to Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. But this time I would like to spend 1 month or so learning the language. I know there are summer schools but those that I found are not free. =(
I wouldn't mind paying for accommodation but I would like a free language course.

Let me know if you know of any German university that offers free summer courses. (not limited to languages, basically any course).

Well, u misconcept gmi then... Hehe its a technical college which acquires u to take german language as one of the subject....but only for 2 sem for diploma  students (learns basic german) n whole sem for GAPP studnts (more advance)

*
I see, so you can't go there and subscribe only to their German language course?

How many students do they have (roughly) each year for diploma and GAPP??

1. I don't think that is possible.  sweat.gif
Coz our class is quite intensive. 6+ hours per week.
But it doesn't hurt to ask. Call GMi for more info.

Considering that you are normal-normal person like me, in which Goethe Institute would definitely be out of choice,  brows.gif you might have some chance here. I think some of the members do tutoring.  nod.gif

2. The previous intake was the most number of students so far. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think more than 1000 students. 1400 maybe.
*
and these 1000 students, will definitely spend some time in Germany?? Where do they normally study in Germany??
Are they mostly under a government sponsorship?

No, not are guaranteed a place there. sweat.gif
Only less than 10% are students who are preparing to take their 4.5 years degree in Germany. They are under the GAPP program. The rest are diploma students. Usually as for diploma, they're offered chances to study abroad after finishing their 3 years. You can choose actually where you wanna go. But of course, you'll need a very good result to make it there. Not sure about their sponsorship though. AFAIK, they can apply for sponsors, usually from MARA.

Under GAPP, if you are under sponsorship, you'll need to meet min requirement of result for your A-levels before you fly to germany. Self-sponsors just need to undergo this programme for 1.5 years, and get atleast 17/20 in TestDAF to get a university placement in Germany.

As for 'where they normally study', I don't know the exact place where, but the GAPP students are expected to study in any one of the Fachhochschule(FH) in Germany, either in the cities or in the outskirts of town, up to you. These FH have reputable Engineering schools because they focus more on application where you can pick up skills needed in the industry. Plus, companies like Volkswagen and BMW form partnerships with FH, which is really great  thumbup.gif
There is one student I know who went to Karlsruhe FH, BMW provides the university with cars so they can toy and do stuff with it. They even showcase a BMW car in the University compound  sweat.gif
So its really great for those who wants to study Automotive Engineering. If anyone is planning to study there, the cost of living isn't that bad either. 800 Euro per month should be okay for most people.

Hope this helps.  whistling.gif

Ok, thanks for the info.

So those who went to Germany under this GAPP, do they mostly stay in Germany after graduation or do they come back to work in Malaysia??

So mostly are fluent in German after graduation at FH??

I think mostly came back to Malaysia. But mostly would gain some working experience, during practical, some work there for some years before coming back, got some who continue their masters. You can get a PR status if you want to. German is pretty open to immigrants. The tax is really through the roof though.  wink.gif

Anyway, for German you'll learn from:

A1->A2->B1->B2 in GAPP program, in which your language skill should be up on par with native speakers already. After finishing the program , you'll fly to Germany in March, then you'll spend another six months being in a language centre there before entering university during winter intake. That is when you'll take TestDAF, which is another language examination as a requirement before entering a German University. So by then, if you're still not fluent in German, then something must be wrong with you laugh.gif
Moreover, you wont find any English being used in the classes. All terms, text books, people left right up down, all German. Basically, everything is in German. In fact, people will come across you as rude if you approach a German with English.  One of the cultures there, I suppose.
*
PR status is acquired through working visa, or does studies count towards PR like Australia/NZ??

So you get to B2 level just by studying in GMI ??

6 months in the language centre, is that full time language studies?

I'm not sure on the specifics but I think you can. If you focus just on German, I think you can do it in 1 year or less.

Is German language hard to learn?

I would say, it's not easy. The grammar is the worse. It makes English looks really really simple.

It's not hard like studying to be a doctor or a rocket scientist; it's hard as in it takes a lot of time.
