mmm...maybe u wanna check first in 3G iPhone or iPhone Club v7

simply put, u can't get a contract unit and bring it home without activating it in store anymore. before this u can just walk out the store with iPhone without performing any activation in store, but now Apple may enforce the new rule with this iPhone 3G. even in Apple Store, u need to perform activation first.

so the solutions are:
1. perform registration in store, and then terminate AT&T account by paying ETF plus extra charges (more $$$), or;
2. get a contract-free unit (which may be available, or maybe not, but most likely there will be no contract-free unit in US) (also more $$$)

either way, the iPhone price will not be USD199 anymore. for more info on ETF plus charges, contract-free iPhone and the countries that has confirmed to carry contract-free units so far, and how much the price will most likely be, pay a visit to 3G iPhone thread and iPhone FAQ thread. but don't just go there and ask as that will invite more and more flames. check first the first page of FAQ.

so far still no one can confirm the iPhone will work seamlessly with our network or not, because it's not even released yet! but myb it will be compatible, as Apple has taken steps on testing their device with its telco partners around the globe. plus with the ambitious 70+ countries release expected this year, myb there will be no problem.

btw regarding the lock on the iPhone, myb (myb yes, myb not) they'll still enforce country lock on contract-free iPhones (as before). but myb i could be wrong. either way, if there's the unlock made, it should be fine.

sorry the infos aren't that easy to chew without reading thoroughly. and sorry for the long answer.

btw as for me, better wait first before getting it.

If his RELATION in the US is "kind" enough to sign the plan ... pay the 2 year contract ... I don't see why he can't get it for $199

Err. Actually I can confirm that you CAN buy the iphone WITHOUT contract from US, I've colleagues that just did that for the 1st gen iphone last year. They were on a biz trip to the US back then.

All they did is walk into the apple store and buy it "as a gift" for someone, meaning, they declined the contract, hence they only paid the price for the phone, not the contract. If you don't buy the contract, the iphone will be unactivated.

So, YES, you CAN buy it at US$199 without any contract. But how you activate it and use it with Malaysia's GSM carriers is up to you. I think we should start a thread on how to do that here smile.gif

Then, what you do next is up to you, how you "unlock" it to use it in Malaysia.

dont just pop in and spread blasphemy here.

if you were to do some reading prior to this, you will come to learn that for the 2nd gen iphone, you need to activate your iphone in the store.

for the first gen of iphone, yes. because you can have the option to have your iphone activated on the spot or at home at your convenience.

hence your confirmation or whatsoever proposal to educate the LFY members is highly inaccurate/inappropriate.

You still think Apple and AT&T are still that dumb to let you walk away paying USD199 without contract?

this is the new rule. u can always check with the WWDC keynote video, and watch the "iPhone Invasion" part. myb u also wanna check with engadget, tuaw, etc etc regarding this issue. for more info u can always visit iPhone FAQ Page.

i'm shocked. i dunno if people don't read anymore, but my explanation is still on the same page!

most likely the problem will be unlocking the iphone because it's new.

But you can Google for a bunch of team that'll try to figure out some way to unlock them.
